Bill Knott is the editor and executive publisher of Adventist Review. The Olympic Basin his is not an Olympic year, and more s the pity. T Perhaps, if it was, we might call attention to a new demonstration sport in hopes of gaining enough popular attention to make it a full-fledged medal event before the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, or the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. A brief history of the other demonstration sports that have succeeded in making the leap from regional favorite to international event reveals that only intense planning, advocacy, and repeated public exposure ensure a breakthrough. Unless the television broadcasts have been burying their coverage in the wee, small hours of the morning, I ve yet to see the international competitions in cannon firing, fire-fighting, pigeon racing, kite flying, roller hockey, and life-saving that were once the darlings of sporting partisans. The event I m proposing has a long but admittedly inconsistent history as an international activity. Early records point to an origin in the first century A.D., but only sporadic engagement through the medieval era. About the time of the sixteenth century Protestant Reformation, there was a decided upswing in popularity, with endorsements coming from various faith-based groups in succeeding centuries. None of these, however, has yet succeeded in achieving the worldwide renown necessary to guarantee a spot on the Olympic event line-up. What if those we ask to serve us were expected to be the ones to model reconciliation and forgiveness? The demonstration sport I m proposing? Foot-washing. Before you roll your eyes and turn the page, allow me to make the briefest of cases. As an official demonstration event on an Olympic stage (given the temperatures involved, I m thinking Summer Games), the practices and competencies necessary to be world-class in foot-washing would be highlighted across both broadcast and social media. Gravelvoiced announcers would quietly intone the angle at which knees were bent; the positioning of the towel above the required basin; the visual symbolism of one human kneeling before another in a posture of humility and service. Leaders, religious and otherwise, would be required by reporters everywhere to give their opinion of the new event: Do you think it s worthy to be included in the Games? Have you ever washed another person s feet? Sales of metal basins would probably skyrocket. Egyptian cotton towels would suddenly be all the rage. Humility might even become popular. Which is all to say that we shouldn t be holding our breath that foot-washing will ever reach the podium as an Olympic event. Despite how much we need it. And for all this, foot-washing truly isn t an optional event, at least for committed followers of Jesus. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another s feet, Jesus said 2000 years ago (John 13:14). And while it doesn t fit the definitions of a modern sport a playing field; arcane and frequently conflicting rules; intense discussions on a hundred radio call-in shows wouldn t it be somehow wonderful if believers suddenly felt compelled to be truly good at it, even up to the edge of righteous competition? What if, instead of resorting to our fiery blogs and ad hominem attacks on those who disagree with us, we found ourselves compelled by public expectation and the commands of Jesus to be kneeling at each other s feet, admitting the inexcusability of

our pride and posturing, and praying for the one whose feet may not need washing half so much as our own? What if those we ask to serve us leaders in the church of Jesus were expected to be the ones to model reconciliation and forgiveness? What if, instead of speaking into microphones, they covenanted to speak in low tones person to person where none save the Spirit may hear, and peace has a chance of reaching the podium? I m not holding my breath that foot-washing will yet make the cut as an Olympic event. But I m willing to spend my breath and some ink to raise its profile as a demonstration event among those who say with Paul, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus (Phil 3:14). 6 Take a Deep Breath Now Jesus showed that neither collective vociferation nor uncritical acquiescence might be our best reaction to current events. POSTED FEBRUARY 2, 2017 In the Spanish language, there is a common saying that reminds us, Mal de muchos, consuelo de tontos (literally, The sorrow of many is the fools consolation. ) Through the years, I remember that pearl of wisdom being used in the most diverse contexts. On my mother s lips, it would usually hide a rebuke against a carefree sense of conformism stemming from a collective below-average performance at school, the sports field, or even church. Recently, I thought once more about that popular saying when pondering some of my fellow members spasmodic reactions to the January 27 executive order by President Trump, which enforces some substantial if perhaps temporary changes to refugees resettlement and immigration processes in the United States. As a result, a sizable number of my fellow believers are demanding the Seventh-day Adventist Church top leaders issue an official Jesus is calling every one of His children to become imitators of His grace. statement condemning the newest political developments. Other faithful members are unashamedly expressing their gratitude to the recently-inaugurated Commander in Chief, as they wonder why the Seventh-day Adventist Church official media outlets are not doing more to praise the first week accomplishments of the new Administration. Those antipodal positions and their more moderate variations could make good material for a tragicomic production, but for the fact that some of those stationed at both sides of the ideological spectrum share not only the same faith, but very likely the same local church, and, at least in one case I know, the same Sabbath School class! Is there any point where these two parallel positions seemingly unbridgeable might somehow intersect? Is there any hope for brothers and sisters sometimes so antagonistic to each other, so entrenched in their political opinions, to reunite? Here I suggest a grid point is possible. In fact, I believe it s found in the life and ministry of Jesus. It s All About Mercy Here s a summary of a well-known story. Jesus goes to Jerusalem. He visits Bethesda (in Hebrew, House of Mercy/Grace ), a water reservoir pool which some believed had magical healing properties. A great multitude of sick people roams around, waiting to jump into the water as soon as it started moving, in hopes of being healed. It s the Sabbath day. Jesus chooses the most wretched of them all. He heals him. He leaves (see John 5). Jesus course of action was one out of several options He had. Indeed, He could have (a) done nothing; (b) blamed the Jewish (or Roman) leaders for the situation; (c) made it a learning moment by lecturing against magical thought, the connection between personal sin and physical infirmities, etc.; (d) healed all the sick and suffering around the pool, thus becoming an instant celebrity (and very likely, shortening His ministry). But Jesus would have none of it. Instead, He chose to defy every convention. He personalized the moment of grace. Not a blame game. Not a lecture. Not a sermon. Chose one. Healed one. Spoke by His actions.

A Personal Enterprise As in the past, Jesus is calling every one of His children to become imitators of His grace. While on our own there is no way we can do everything, there s a lot we can do. The possibilities out there are as varied as our interests and preferences. You and your family could very well choose at least one of the following options: Help to reverse the dwindling giving trend of Adventist Mission ( Take the ADRA Pledge to support refugees around the world and close to home ( Choose to contribute to one of the Seventh-day Adventist Church ministries Prison Ministries ( Adventist Ministries for the Deaf ( the Blind ( you name it. Become a foster parent. Adopt a child (by providing for her basic needs and education, or literally). Volunteer more in causes that cater to the outcast, the destitute, the voiceless. Reach out to one orphan, in your country or abroad. Build personal bridges with a new immigrant family in your neighborhood. Your rationale for springing to action should be even more important: No matter what you do, strive to follow Jesus example. Focus your efforts. Don t lecture. Don t condemn. Don t expect the government to act. Defy worldly conventions. Choose one. Heal one. Speak by your actions. Out of Our Comfort Zone Which is easier? To leave our comfort zone and strive to improve the life of one person around us, or to defend our deepest and dearest convictions online or by posting or chanting witty slogans? If half the time personally spent surveying the blogosphere were used to engage our contemporary Bethesda invalids, the suffering souls around us would very soon notice. Our local churches would notice. The world would notice. Certainly, there will be instances when we may be prompted by the Spirit to enter the public arena to defend our Bible-based principles and beliefs. Should the need arise, we have the assurance that the same Spirit Who prods us to act will even speak on our behalf (see Mark 13:11). Meanwhile, let s not get side-tracked in proving a point by disproving a fellow brother or sister. In situations like these, the sorrow of many may very well become the consolation of the wise. 9 Mark A. Kellner Online Content Editor Senate Chaplain Barry Black, Adventist Pastor, Keynotes U.S. National Prayer Breakfast Recalls motivation to memorize Bible verses and then a desire to know Jesus POSTED FEBRUARY 2, 2017 A ddressing President Donald J. Trump and a room filled with American political and civic leaders as well as international leaders including King Abdullah II of Jordan on Feb. 2 at the 65th National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, U.S. Senate Chaplain Barry C. Black, a Seventh-day Adventist pastor, recalled the motivation his mother gave him to memorize Bible verses, which kindled a lifelong quest to know the Author of those words. Black s mother, a sharecropper s daughter who had a limited education but unlimited vision, had challenged him and his siblings with a promise of 5-cents for every verse they memorized. One day I memorized 1 Peter 1:18-19, Black recalled. I was only ten years of age. [The verses read,] We are redeemed not with corruptible things such as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Jesus Christ, And even at ten I had sufficient analytical skills to know that the value of an object is based upon the price someone is willing to pay. Black continued, And when it dawned on me, a little guy in the inner-city, that God said what John 3 calls the only one of its kind, His only begotten son, to die for me, no one was able to make me feel inferior again. Moreover, moreover, I said I ve got to get to know this Man who died for me. So now, it was not just for the nickels that I started reading the Word. Now in his 14th year as Senate Chaplain, Black is the first African-American, the first Seventh-day Adventist, and the first retired military officer to hold that position. He was named to the Senate post after retiring from the United States Navy as Chief of Chaplains, holding the rank of Rear Admiral. Black is the second Seventh-day Adventist to keynote the breakfast, with neurosurgeon and Housing and Urban Development Secretary-designate Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., being the first. Carson addressed the breakfast twice, the most recent time in During his prayer breakfast keynote, which was broadcast nationally on cable and satellite television, Black mentioned the kind of relationship God wants to have with those who approach Him in prayer, citing Jesus words to His disciples in John 15:16, I no longer call you My servants, I call you My friends. He illustrated this with an anecdote: My oldest son is in the audience, and one of my pet peeves is he calls, and when he calls he says, Hello, Dad. This is Barry. Really? I mean I

have Caller ID and yet he s got to identify himself? If I get a call that says, Hello, Darling, I should not respond, Who is this? God wants an intimate relationship with us. Black noted the power of prayer, said he was praying for President Trump, and reminded the audience of Paul s injunction to pray for those in authority. Referring to Vice President Michael Pence, Black said, I was talking with [him] backstage and I said I am praying that the hand of God will be on you. 12 Chilean Seventh-day Adventists Share Message at 'Hacksaw Ridge' Showings Adventist broadcast network, local church work together POSTED FEBRUARY 1, 2017 S eventh-day Adventist church members in Santiago, Chile's capital city, joined with Nuevo Tiempo Network Chile to promote a biography of the late Desmond T. Doss, Sr., the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism as a medic in the United States Army. On the opening weekend for "Hacksaw Ridge," the Oscar-nominated movie about Doss' heroism directed by Mel Gibson, members of the Vive Lakonn Adventist community, visited the Hoyts theaters of La Reina and Plaza Egaña, in Santiago, to pass out copies of the biography, written by his widow and translated into Spanish. Those who did not receive a book did not leave empty-handed, because organizers prepared leaflets to advertise a websitewhere viewers could request the book "Desmond Doss: un objetor de conciencia" ("Desmond Doss: Conscientious Objector") for free. The church's South American Spanish Publishing House (ACES) published the translation. The church members spent ten hours in the movie theater, covering a period of three showings of the film, wearing a Soldier Desmond Doss t-shirt to identify themselves. Similar movie theater outreach efforts in the United States and in several European nations have sparked public and media interest in the Seventh-day Adventist faith Doss held. Mónica Posada, a Chilean who is not an Adventist, said she was touched by Doss' story. Chilean moviegoers were interested in the story of Seventh-day Adventist Desmond Doss. (Photo: ASN) The truth is I did not know what to expect, my son insisted a lot and it made quite an impression on me at the end. His convictions and everything that led him to fight, that is a miracle and I can hardly believe it is real life," she told Nuevo Tiempo. "I have been seeking Jesus quite a lot lately, and this is a very strong message that I found where I least expected it. It taught me about the importance of convictions, of not giving up before anything and about respect, because through his peace and love, he was able to be strong because of his convictions and in the end, he surprised everybody. If we really believe in God and want to fight for Him, we cannot give in.

Although the couple intended to stay only 45 minutes touring the picturesque town of Boot with its 700-year-old stone mill, the tour ended up lasting several hours when something the miller said caught Bull s attention. The miller had a very large library, Bull recalls. He was not only keeping the large millstones in good running order, he was also a scholar and very knowledgeable about the grain-milling process. One of the things he stressed was that the large millstones in a working mill have to be taken apart every few months for dressing... Read Now A weekly GraceNote from Adventist Review editor Bill Knott The unredeemed heart is always in a war with grace, for grace erases all the points we give ourselves for better choices, deeper penance, sins avoided, and comparative holiness. Through one magnificently unrepeatable act the sacrifice of Jesus we all are offered what we otherwise would think we had to earn. Grace cancels debts without a mortgage; it lets us live in the Father s house without a payment book. It tells us we are children even heirs when we would rather be just servants. Grace ultimately upends the whole economy by which we think to prove our value to the Lord and to ourselves. The truth allows no compromise: we are either saved by grace, or not at all. So stay in grace. -Bill Knott 2
