3 Strong One-Day Attendance to Biblical Creation Film Prompts Additional Showings Two Adventist scientists among the experts involved in this one-of-a-kind project POSTED MARCH 7, 2017 s Genesis History?" opened in 700 theaters in the United States on Thursday, Feb. 23. More than 143,000 people attended showings of this documentary, which "I features Adventist scientist Arthur V. Chadwick, Ph.D. Pleased with this attendance, organizers scheduled encore showings for Thursday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 7. The film will show in limited engagement on March 14 in Canada. "Is Genesis History?" explores topics ranging from science consistent with the biblical account of creation to the Genesis flood and the way in which Hebrew language is used in the first book of the Bible. It features a wide range of experts in fields, ranging from geology to biology and archaeology. Among these, Chadwick describes his research on dinosaur fossilization. Commenting on the film s performance, Chadwick, from Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas, said, I m really honored to be featured in a film this successful. Let s pray that ultimately the data we were able to share is enough to open minds to the profound truth contained in Genesis and the rest of the Bible. Chadwick was filmed at the dinosaur dig he leads each summer at Hanson Ranch in Wyoming. At this location, his team of volunteers and scientists has unearthed a massive dinosaur graveyard, revealing important information about how dinosaurs died and were fossilized. [Click here for more information about Arthur V. Chadwick s research.] Another Adventist scientist involved with the production is Leonard Brand, Ph.D., from Loma Linda University in California. Brand served as a consultant to the producers, drawing on his extensive experience as a Bible-believing Christian and a scientist. Treating the Bible as a reliable source of information about the past has opened my eyes to things that I would not have otherwise noticed, says Brand. In fact, the Bible has made me a better scientist than I would have been if I had ignored the history it records. "Is Genesis History?" is hosted by Del Tackett, a software engineer who served as director of technical planning for the National Security Council at the Whitehouse during the George H. W. Bush administration. Since then, Tackett has extensive experience in education and media. Tackett is known for his role in Focus on the Family s Truth Project. The documentary is available for pre-purchase on DVD; shipping not available until April 11. 6 Marcos Paseggi Senior Correspondent, Adventist Review African Monks Become Adventist Missionaries Thanks to Radio Ministry Adventist World Radio keeps making inroads in hard-toreach places POSTED MARCH 6, 2017 H undreds of priests and monks of a major Christian denomination are flocking to the Seventh-day Adventist Church to study the Bible in an African country, and in turn, are becoming missionaries thanks to the ministry of Adventist World Radio (AWR). In a recent letter addressed to AWR leaders at the Adventist Church headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, United States, the Adventist leader in the region shared how an area traditionally difficult for evangelism has experienced a turnaround as never imagined. We tried for decades to share our faith with these Christians, but we did not get anywhere, confessed the Adventist leader, whose name is not disclosed for security reasons. Many times, they ran us out of town, and our safety was at risk. In that area, close to 90 percent of the people belong to one Christian denomination. The church president was glad to report, however, that the hardships of the past are now history, as priests and monks in the area are showing an increasing interest in learning about Adventist beliefs and, in many cases, are joining the church. He also shared some impressive statistics. We tried for decades to share our faith with these Christians, but we did not get anywhere In 2015, 128 priests and monks joined the [Adventist] Church, he wrote. In 2016, we baptized 98 more, and another 120 priests and monks are currently ready to join our church. The current biggest challenge the church faces in the area is how to nurture the new converts and reach new ones, as they are scattered across a vast territory, in one of the poorest areas in that African nation. Adventism was born in that part of the country, but it stalled literally for decades, said a native of the area who has lived for decades in the United States and has been supporting evangelistic and educational projects in the region. This Seventh-day Adventist lay member has raised funds for purchasing Bibles and books by Ellen G. White, a co-founder of the church. Still, church leaders were looking for ways of sharing the Adventist message more effectively, something they found in the ministry of AWR. The best way we have found to reach and stay connected [with recent converts and interests] is through Adventist World Radio, wrote the church president. He went on to explain that baptized priests and monks have become evangelists and that they are sharing the Adventist message to their fellow priests and monks wherever they are. As the official radio broadcasting ministry of the Adventist church, AWR recently funded an initial distribution of 300 radios for the region with pre-recorded programs on integrated memory cards. This technology is very effective for these people, wrote the Adventist leader. It is convenient, practical, and powerful. The new converts and interests are now able to take the radios and flash-drives with them and listen to content provided by the regional church office.

7 While these are important developments, they are not new for AWR, a ministry that, according to its website, is devoted to broadcast the Adventist hope in Christ to the hardest-toreach people groups of the world in their own languages. This worldwide radio ministry has been spreading messages of healing and I wish our pioneers could witness this development salvation through shortwave and AM/FM radio, podcasts, and on-demand in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, in the same region, another group of 50 priests recently made their way to the regional church offices to spend a week studying the Bible and preparing for baptism, reported Greg Scott, Senior Vice President of AWR. Another 50 are scheduled to attend every two weeks for additional training. It is a far cry from the hardships endured by the first Adventist missionaries in the area. I wish our pioneers, who were persecuted by the ancestors of these priests and monks, could witness this development, wrote the regional church president. We praise the Lord for it. 9 Adventist Review TV Team Wraps Up Filming of Animal Encounters 2 in Costa Rica The popular series will soon be available on multiple platforms and languages POSTED MARCH 8, 2017 I t took two weeks and over 1,000 kilometers on the road in Costa Rica for a production team to film the best natural spots and animal shelters for Season 2 of the Animal Encounters series a nature documentary produced byartv, the TV and video production arm of Adventist Review Ministries. For some takes, the ARtv team used several GoPro cameras together, to show 360 degree views. [Photography by Lizbeth Elejalde/IAD] The production follows the successful series of Animal Encounters filmed in In that first series, felines, elephants, sharks, dolphins were featured. The series has been aired repeatedly on Hope Channel, Revelation TV in the U.K., Parables and Go Christian TV in the U.S., as well as Amazon Prime and ARtv. André Brink, producer of the series and lover of nature, animals and media technology, said the production team of professionals, who came from South Africa, Germany, the United States, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica, successfully completed the filming in the Central American country a few days ago. It took seven years to get to the point of filming the second season, said Brink, but God s timing is always perfect. More than two years were spent just on planning and obtaining permits to film in the natural areas and locations for Season 2. Costa Rica was the perfect location to film the series for its biodiversity of animals and plants, explained Brink. Thanks to coordinated efforts with the church s Esperanza TV Costa Rica, key sites were selected. For months, Daniel Valerín, producer of Esperanza TV Costa Rica, worked with Costa Rica s Tourism Institute, the Ministry of Environment and Energy, and the National Conservation Area System, for the project. To get permits and logistics coordinated to film in various natural locations was a great We are grateful for the opportunity to work with André and

I am passionate about the stories, so I want to go to a format closer to reality, said Duré. We want viewers to experience a close encounter with nature but also feel the emotions of our presenters. Viewers will enjoy a greater experience, said Duré. The series was filmed completely in 4K quality, which gives a sharpness never before achieved in the images. Aerial views through drones and GoPro cameras were used as well as special equipment used for slow motion, and VR360 on land and underwater, Duré added. The project has been made possible thanks to Adventist Review, Hope Channel, and several media production centers around the world, said Brink. It was also produced in partnership with Hope Channel Inter-America and Esperanza TV Costa Rica. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with André and his team with this project in Costa Rica, said Abel Márquez, communication director for the Inter-American Division in charge of Hope Channel Inter-America. Hope Channel Inter-America and its Esperanza TV Costa Rica were able to contribute four staffers to help with the logistics and filming of the series. The series will be translated into multiple languages, said Brink. We hope Adventist and non-adventist people around the world can experience something new with our program. Animal Encounters Season II will include 10 episodes of 24 minutes each and is expected to be available on the internet, on demand and television by the end of the year. Short clips of the episodes will be available on the ARtv app and full-length episodes available on Hope Channel. 12 Adventist Hospital in Jamaica, Site of a First-inthe-World Surgery First viscoelastic 4-level cervical disc replacement offers hope to patients worldwide POSTED MARCH 7, 2017 S eventh-day Adventist-ownedAndrews Memorial Hospital (AMH) in Kingston, Jamaica, was the Center of Excellence site where a patient was the first ever to benefit from a 4-level viscoelastic cervical disc replacement procedure. The surgery, which will usher in a revolutionary new treatment approach in spinal surgery globally, was performed by a team of doctors led by Harvard-trained and world-renown orthopedic spinal surgeon, Kingsley R. Chin on Jan. 30, 2017, using an advanced technology known as thefreedom Cervical Disc. Owned by AxioMed, LLC., the technology took sixteen years and over US$85 million to achieve the level of perfection, safety and efficacy in both the lumbar and cervical versions to implant the discs in the United States, Europe and Australia. The lumbar version completed its clinical trials in more than 400 patients in the United States and will likely be available in The cervical version completed the preclinical trials in Europe. I am blessed to have the desire, ability, commitment, means and access to resources to allow me to give back to Jamaica in very meaningful and powerful ways like this surgery Kingsley R. Chin is Jamaican and a leading surgeon-entrepreneur who saw the benefits of the technology and invested in buying it from the original group of founders so he could now offer it in the country. Chin worked in business in New York City before becoming a surgeon and follows a lineage of physicians who have pioneered advances in medicine. He founded companies to commercialize technologies that have benefitted patients worldwide. This particular technology is ideal for treating the painful degenerative spine as it most closely mimics the normal disc using a proprietary viscoelastic polymer technology, explained Chin. The purpose of the disc is to relieve neck and back pain while maintaining more normal motion and alignment than is allowed with other competing disc replacements and spinal fusion devices, which immobilize the spine. A year ago, Chin, who has been operating out of the University of the West Indies (UWI) as a visiting professor, was encouraged by Fabio Pencle, a Seventh-day Adventist physician, to open his US-based Orthopedic and Spine Surgery, LESS Institute Inc. Center of Excellence at Andrews Memorial Hospital. TheLESS Institute Inc.is considered the world leader in LESS Exposure Surgery (LES), a philosophy of less invasive surgery, which allows patients to be discharged the same day after surgery with quick recovery. Chin grew up as a Seventh-day Adventist in his hometown of Buff Bay, Portland, Jamaica and left the country for the United States on a football-academic scholarship to attend Columbia University in New York City, where he earned two diplomas, was president of his senior class and soccer ivy-league player of the year. He went on to graduate studies at Harvard University where he earned four diplomas and became an orthopedic surgeon. Chin spent four years teaching at the University of Pennsylvania as the chief spine surgeon before he moved to Florida to open the LESS Institute.

[Photo by Nigel Coke/IAD] I am blessed to have the desire, ability, commitment, means and access to resources to allow me to give back to Jamaica in very meaningful and powerful ways like this surgery, said Chin. Coming from the humblest of circumstances, I can now look back and see the reasons for my journey. I especially see how much I needed the strength and lessons I received from my Seventh-day Adventist faith as a young boy and why it is fitting for Andrews Memorial Hospital to be the site of this historic surgery. Chin said he still has to try his best every day at every level for each patient. I pray for humility to keep learning to be better as I dedicate myself to excellence, never forgetting that I am blessed for a reason. We are delighted that the hospital partnered with Dr. Chin to execute this historic surgery in Jamaica, said Pastor Everett Brown, chairman of the board of governors of Andrews Memorial Hospital, and president of the church in Jamaica. We are pleased to know that our hospital is strategically placed and has the capacity not only to provide basic health care to We are delighted that the hospital partnered with Dr. Chin to execute this historic surgery in Jamaica people from all social, religious and economic backgrounds, but also to address the healthcare needs of individuals, utilizing modern technology. Brown said the hospital remains committed to making the facility available to enhance the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of all people. AMH currently boasts 65 beds, five wards, four operating theaters, one which specializes in large specialty cases such as open heart surgery, a multi-dimensional CT Scan machine and a major medical complex. Over the years, the hospital has developed a reputation for being one of the most outstanding maternity centers in Jamaica and many of the island s foremost obstetricians/gynecologists make it their hospital of choice for their patients. The patient operated on by Chin was happy to have been introduced to LESS Institute by a relative of hers. She was also grateful for the fact that the surgery took place in Jamaica, with a team of doctors that she was familiar with. I felt very relaxed going into surgery, and felt the team had my best interest at heart, said the patient, who is at home recuperating and looking forward to become more active soon. The vision for Andrews Memorial Hospital is to be the hospital of choice for the Caribbean, said Marvin Rouhotas, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital. No doubt, this historic surgery has positioned the hospital with the advantage of the expertise of neuro-spinal surgery not performed anywhere else in the world. In October 2010, the Gleaner Company, Jamaica s oldest print newspaper, described Andrews Memorial Hospital as a gift from the Adventist Church to Jamaica, as it presented the hospital with the Gleaner Honor Award for its commitment to providing first-class health care to Jamaicans.

16 Adventist Businesswoman Shares Both Chocolates and Faith at the Oscars The Chocolate Lady sees Hollywood as her mission field F POSTED MARCH 7, 2017 or the third year in a row, a Seventh-day Adventist businesswoman shared her faith at the most famous film event in the world. Rayanne Sabará Rodrigues, a chocolate maker who immigrated to the United States from Brazil less than twenty years ago, is regularly invited to Hollywood celebrities events, where she offers not only her cocoa sweets but the sweet message of God s Holy Word. This year, Sabará showcased her sweets at the Hollywood Museum, located across the street from the Dolby Theatre, where the Academy Awards commonly known as the Oscars ceremony has taken place since She also made 550 chocolate figurines for guests attending two benefit galas during the Oscars week the Roger Neal Style Hollywood, and the UNICEF Children Uniting Nations events, the latter coordinated by Daphna Ziman, owner of the Warner Brothers mansion, and actress Sharon Stone. I feel honored to be personally invited by these people, said Sabará in an interview with the Brazilian Times, the largest and oldest Brazilian newspaper in the United States. I am at a loss for words to express what I feel when I take part in events like these. I just thank God for opening those doors. Sabará made it to Hollywood after a New York stylist tried her vegan sweets and shared them with one of the producers of the Oscars week events a few years ago. Sabará made it to Hollywood after a New York stylist tried her vegan sweets and shared them with one of the producers of the Oscars week events a few years ago. The producer liked the sweets so much that he invited her to showcase her products at the events surrounding the annual Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood, California. Given that chance, Sabará made the most of it, as her Glamour Bombonier brand, based in Worcester, Massachusetts, won the celebrities palate, and she soon became known as the Chocolate Lady in Hollywood.

[Photo by Rayanne Sabará Rodrigues] The Adventist businesswoman, who in 2015 was named by the Brazilian Immigrant to the US Workers Union (CTBI) as one of the 30 Brazilian personalities in the country, said she often keeps in touch with some of the celebrities she meets at the events she is invited to. Last year, for instance, singer and songwriter Carol Connors invited her to her mansion in Beverly Hills. She was very kind to me, said Sabará. She sat at the piano and played the theme song from the movie Rocky, one of her most famous compositions. Sabará made clear, however, that her business is much more than advertising and selling chocolates. For one, God has a preferential seat in everything Sabará says and does, as both her business cards and product labels include the phrase Always trust in the Lord. This is the message I want to share with my customers, she said. Sabará who worships at the Worcester Brazilian Seventh-day Adventist Church in her hometown walks tall when explaining that her ultimate goal is to make the most of her business as a tool for reaching out and sharing hope with others. This year, as the February 26 Academy Awards 2017 ceremony approached, Sabará saw in the movie Hacksaw Ridge which received six Oscars nominations and ended up winning in two categories an even greater opportunity for sharing her faith. Directed by Mel Gibson, the film tells the story of Desmond T. Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist United States Army medic who became the first conscientious objector to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. Understanding the significance of the story, Sabará presented some celebrities the biography of this Adventist hero of World War II. The businesswoman also distributed copies of The Great Hope, a condensed edition of the book The Great Controversy, by Ellen G. White, a co-founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I have noticed that often, celebrities suffer from loneliness and emptiness, something that prompted me to share love and hope through our literature, Sabará said. The Adventist businesswoman is also known for reaching out to immigrants. We help immigrant families from Brazil with clothing and food, she said. She even set up a Facebook group to share information about job vacancies and rental properties. Sabará also volunteers as a hospital chaplain assistant as part of a group that prays for the sick and collects toys for hospitalized children. As a result of their work, several people have requested Bible studies, she said. We help immigrant families from Brazil with clothing and food Sabará, who was recently invited by an actress to participate in a television show and tell about her business and her religious beliefs, believes that what is happening to her fits into God s plan for her life. It was for a special purpose that the Lord brought me here, said Sabará. It is the reason I want to keep advertising my products and using this opening in Hollywood to uplift God s name, she said.
