The Sacred with the Mundane? In Romania, combining the ordinary with the eternal is the way to go POSTED MARCH 17, 2017 I t was the quintessential European street: a narrow, cobbled corridor strewn with tiny cars and draped in Austro-Hungarian architecture. I walked these Romanian avenues as a guest evangelist, holding one of over 2,000 meetings with the Romanian Union s country-wide outreach. Marioara Tulcan stands in her clothing store which combines regular business with discussions on religious topics and sharing Seventh-day Adventist literature in Arad, Romania. [Photo by Ciprian Savischi] My pastor friend and I stepped inside a small bookstore that was tucked amid pastry shops, second-hand stores, and pharmacies. It was filled with books, having both familiar covers and foreign titles, and health food products that aligned with the habits of another culture. But this was clearly an Adventist book store, locally known as the Sola Scriptura Library. I greeted the two workers, purchased a hymnal of the beautiful songs I was learning, and we made our way down the street. Later that week an errand took me to the same part of town, and my friend and I ducked into a different kind of shop. Looking for something special to take home to my family, my friend helped me navigate the traditional clothes on the shelves. In this store, too, I noticed some familiar literature. Brochures with the face of Jesus. An assortment of books on the shelf behind the point of sale. We d stepped inside another center of influence, this one run by an Adventist member who mingled business affairs with spiritual passion. I was introduced to the shop s owner as a guest evangelist from the United States and conversed with her about the meetings taking place all around the city. She explained to my translator, face radiant with a smile, that one of her customers decided to be baptized in one of the seminars. Another customer that she was studying with had also made decisions, and would likely be baptized as well. The striking difference between these two shops, at least when I was there, was the activity inside them. My companion and I were the only patrons in the Adventist book store planted in the center of this community that fuses European secularism and Eastern The striking difference between

Orthodoxy. The Adventist Church Manuals, among other things, would have been foreign elements to the common passer-by. The clothing store, however, was disarming with its common, everyday wares. The door was constantly being opened by local people coming and going, turning their heads as we talked, and listening to our discussion about spiritual matters. these two shops, at least when I was there, was the activity inside them. An institutional presence is important. Serving our membership and community with literature and resources is a critical part of our church s work. And perhaps there are people in that city that trace their knowledge of God and His end-time message to that little book shop on the cobblestone street. But on that cloudy afternoon in Romania, the message to me was clear. The most powerful influence comes from people like you and me, doing everyday things while bringing Jesus into them. Proclamation ministry is also important. Just ask the gentleman that traveled home from Italy to Romania for a two-week vacation. His trip happened to coincide with the two weeks that our meetings were being held near his family s home. We both recognized that God had a purpose in orchestrating his schedule so he could learn new truths in his native language, and he expressed gratitude to God for the divine appointment. But it is the personal work coming close to people with a spirit of compassion and unselfish love that gives our message traction in the minds and hearts of those who hear it. Incredible things are happening in Romania. Guest speakers have returned to America, Australia, and other places in Europe with stories of how God touched people through the great evangelistic effort that recently took place. But the greatest of stories may be waiting to be told on a sea of glass, somewhere in Eternity. They re stories of everyday folks like you and me. People who mingled the sacred with the mundane, and rejoiced as lives were changed for eternity. 6 Nathan Brown is book editor at Signs Publishing Company, near Melbourne, Australia. He is author/editor of 10 books. Hero or Saint? ention the word hero and we are likely to quickly come up with a list of superheroes, movie characters (or the actors who play them), musicians, and M sports stars. They are the larger-than-life names that dominate our screens, billboards, and social media feeds. Not only are we constantly learning about them, we are also and at the same time being told repeatedly that this is what it means to make it. That I must be the hero in my story, even if only by the shoes I wear or the selective stories I share in the stream of my online persona. In too many senses, my life can become a massive video game in which what I do, say, and buy are judged by how they will look onscreen for my sometimes-imagined audience. Be honest: for most of us our likes generally come from our extended network of friends who should be cheering for us anyway, and could be doing it in more meaningful ways. Or they come from people we don t know, those with whom we have no real connection; so their opinion doesn t really matter to us at all. The word hero does not appear anywhere in the New Testament. chocolate (and posting about it). When it comes to changing the world a worthy goal and something we are called to do we can often begin with this similar mindset. There are those who attain their status among our media heroes for doing good, or for looking like they are doing good. And that can become our definition of doing good: posting the photo with the kids on a mission trip, liking an online petition or protest, wearing the right T-shirt, eating only fair-trade All these things are good, but often only a little bit good. When I repeatedly place myself as the hero of these stories, I can easily get these things out of proportion, believing that I am doing much good. I become the hero of my story, at the same time as having this nagging doubt that maybe I m not quite as great as I m trying to appear. And notice how this becomes an individual project. Even when with a group, it is the photo I take that becomes my story. The heroes we watch and follow and applaud are usually individuals. In a team setting, the hero is the one who takes over the game, demands the spotlight, and dominates the conversation. There are definitely heroes of a sort in the Bible. Spend some time reading Hebrews 11, for example: great people who did great things. But notice that this hero status always comes in the context of something larger: It was by faith... or as part of a great cloud of witnesses (Heb. 11; 12:1). This language is important and, as the authors of The Justice Calling point out, the word hero does not appear anywhere in the New Testament. [1] They argue that this is an important distinction to notice: The hero vision is different in every way from the portrait of the saint. As an example, Paul addressed his letter to the Christians in Rome in this way: To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints (Rom. 1:7, ESV[2]). First, the foundation for this status is not our heroics, likes, or stuff; it comes from something outside ourselves, something we have been given in being loved by God. Second, it is always a calling, not an achievement or status, and something that calls us outside ourselves. Paul was a hero of faith, but he was focused on the saints around him. Third, it is always plural. We might be heroes by ourselves; that often comes with the definition of a hero, the one who stands out or rises above. By contrast, saints are saints

together: Every single one of the sixty-four reference to saints in the New Testament is plural. [3] You might have the opportunity to be a hero in whatever context, stream, or challenge you fit. If so, do it well, do it meaningfully and faithfully. Make sure it matters. But our larger calling is to be saints: faithfully and together, whether successful or not. More important than accumulating followers is finding those people who share our life, our faith, and our values. Those with whom we can really make a difference in the world, sometimes in big ways, often in everyday and ordinary ways that matter. Given how Paul began his letter to the Romans, it is hardly surprising that he concludes with a request that these Christians pray for him (see Rom. 15:30), and work with him so that I will be able to come to you with a joyful heart, and we will be an encouragement to each other (Rom. 15:32, NLT[4]). He then gives a long list of people who were part of the church and the team (see Rom. 16). Paul was a hero of faith, but he was focused on the saints around him and directed all glory to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, forever (Rom. 16:27). So hero or saints? Status or calling? Likes or loved? Solo or together? Competition or encouragement? Follower or disciple? Instantly or forever? Praise for me or glory for Him? Choose well. 9 Marcos Paseggi Senior Correspondent, Adventist Review Desmond Doss Honored Posthumously for His Vegetarian Stance Animal rights organization presents award at namesake Adventist school POSTED MARCH 16, 2017 ver a decade after passing to his rest, Desmond T. Doss, the Seventh-day Adventist United States Army medic who became the first conscientious objector to win the O Congressional Medal of Honor, hasn t stopped collecting various honors and awards. This time, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an animal rights organization with 5 million members around the world, presented the Hero to Animals award posthumously because, in addition to refusing to pick up a gun while in the army and throughout his life, Doss was also a lifelong vegetarian and a longstanding advocate for non-violence and compassion. The Hero to Animals award was presented on Feb. 7 at the Desmond T. Doss Christian Academy, a Seventh-day Adventist operated K-12 school in Lynchburg, Virginia, United States, by PETA s senior vice-president Dan Matthews. February 7 was Doss birthday, the day he would have turned 98. In a special school assembly, school principal Steve Doss accepted the award on behalf of his namesake honoree. Dan Matthews, senior vice-president of PETA, presents the "Hero to Animals" award to Desmond T. Doss Christian Academy principal Steve Doss. The honor, awarded posthumously to Desmond Doss, acknowledges his longstanding advocacy of non-violence and compassion. [Photo: Jason Witt] I m honored to receive this award on behalf of Desmond, said principal Doss according to the website of the Potomac Conference, or church region, which oversees Desmond T. Doss Academy and other 19 Adventist schools within its territory in the State of Virginia and the Washington Metropolitan Area. Principal Doss then recalled how in the movie, Desmond is in the middle of the battle, in the most heinous conditions, when he decides to hand his meat products to another soldier. When Doss fellow soldier asks him why he does not want them, he simply tells him, I don t eat meat. I think it shows how Desmond lived his life and was always true to who he was, said principal Doss. That s a lesson to all of us at Desmond T. Doss Christian Academy to always honor your conviction and don t let other people or conditions make you compromise, he said.

While the story of Doss was well known in Adventist circles for years, a 2016 film directed by Mel Gibson and starring Andrew Garfield in the role of Private Doss made his exploits during World War II known to a worldwide audience. In the experience depicted in the highly-acclaimed Hacksaw Ridge film, Doss who had decided never to carry a gun to kill another human being managed to save 75 fellow soldiers in Okinawa in one day in the middle of a fierce battle. The film was nominated for the Academy Awards in six categories, and went on to win in two. Tiffany Doss contributed with this story. 12 Marcos Paseggi Senior Correspondent, Adventist Review Ancient Palace with Biblical Connections Discovered in Iraq Archaeologists believe it is the residence of Assyrian king mentioned in the Bible POSTED MARCH 17, 2017 I raqi archaeologists believe that the recent inscriptions and engraved bulls and lions discovered under a destroyed shrine in Mosul, Iraq, have revealed part of the palace of an ancient Assyrian king with connections to the biblical account, reported the Associated Press on March 12. The discovery of the ancient structures came about as Iraqi troops were surveying the tunnels dug by Islamic State militants under a destroyed shrine, which for many centuries had been considered the burial place of the biblical prophet Jonah. The underground structures are thought to be part of the palace of King Esarhaddon, who ruled the Neo-Assyrian empire in the 7 th century B.C., some 2,700 ago. Eastern Mosul, in southern Iraq, marks the site of ancient Nineveh. According to Gerald Klingbeil, research professor of ancient Near Eastern Studies and Old Testament at Andrews University and an associate editor of Adventist Review/Adventist World, the structure s tentative identification with the lost palace of the Neo-Assyrian king Esarhaddon is based on the reported discovery of cuneiform phrases on a piece of marble, which are exclusively associated with Esarhaddon s reign in the first half of the seventh century B.C. ( B.C.). The chance find of the remains of a palace beneath the Nebi Yunus shrine illustrates well the fact that we need to speak humbly and tentatively about ancient history, said Klingbeil. There is more history hidden underneath tells and ancient cities that just waits to be discovered. The Bible includes three mentions of Esarhaddon in the Old Testament, explaining that he was a son of Senacherib, the Assyrian king who after failing to conquer Jerusalem in the times of King Hezekiah, returned to Nineveh, where his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with a sword, and escaped to the land of Ararat. Both the Bible and a number of historical sources confirm that Esarhaddon reigned in his place (2 Kings 19:37; Isa. 37:38). A third mention is found in Ezra 4:2, in the context of a later rebuilding of the Jerusalem wall. The chance find of the remains of a palace beneath the Nebi Yunus shrine illustrates well the fact that we need to speak humbly and tentatively about ancient history The Mosul Jonah shrine on the site of ancient Nineveh was blown up by IS militants after they took control of the city in 2014, reported the Associated Press. When Iraqi troops regained control in the eastern part of Mosul in January, they found the tunnels IS had dug under the destroyed shrine and into the side of the hill, when the ancient structures were revealed. It is believed that the militants had been looking for artifacts to loot. The haphazard tunneling of IS fighters and their focus on artifacts that are currently flooding the illicit antiquities market demonstrates what archaeology is not, said Klingbeil. On the contrary, he said, archaeology is all about documenting, uncovering, and understanding how ancient people lived and died; what they hoped and what they believed; what they ate and how they related to the larger world.

Klingbeil and other Christians archaeologists believe this link to the real world of ancient people also reflects a link to the Bible. Ultimately, the story of individuals and people connects these stories to God s big story of redemption, Klingbeil concluded. 15 Adventist Leaders in Australia Call for Compassion in Foreign Policy Christian faiths join hands to fight inequality and poverty in the region POSTED MARCH 16, 2017 L eaders of the Adventist Church in Australia have joined 11 other Australian churches calling on the Australian Federal Government to make compassion and equity foundations of the nation s foreign policy and to lift levels of foreign aid to the internationally agreed target of 0.7 percent of Gross National Income (GNI). The call comes at a time when Australia s foreign aid is at its lowest ever percentage of GNI (the foreign aid program formally began in the 1950s). The church leaders also made their statement in the face of recent trends around the world which promote isolationism, exclusionary nationalisms or the forceful pursuit of naked self-interest. Jorge Munoz, president of the Australian Union Conference, or church region, signed the statement in his capacity as chair of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Australia board. ADRA Australia is the humanitarian arm of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in the country. Raising our church s voice is consistent with Jesus call to love our neighbours as ourselves, said ADRA Australia CEO Mark Webster. Australia s aid program saves lives; supporting it is not a matter of politics but of humanity. The church leaders statement one of over 9,000 public submissions to the government s foreign policy white paper was coordinated by Christian campaign group Micah Australia and is endorsed by signatories from the Adventist, Anglican, Apostolic, Baptist, Catholic, Chinese Methodist, Churches of Christ, Congregational, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Salvation Army and Uniting churches. "It is heartening to see Australia s Christian leaders speaking up for a more just, generous and compassionate foreign policy." Jesus asked us to love our neighbours as ourselves, says the text of the submission. While this is a call to the church it was also, in the Hebrew Scriptures, a commandment to a nation. After outlining a biblical theology for justice and compassion, the submission addresses specific issues, including the scourge of poverty, economic exclusion and rising inequality, grave breaches of people s human and civic rights, and the vulnerability of our nation and our neighbours to natural disasters and the increasing impact of climate change. The submission also made mention of the unprecedented global displacement of people. More people on the face of the planet are either refugees or internally displaced than at any other time in human history. Australia s foreign policy must continue to make peace-keeping and conflict prevention an urgent priority. Many Seventh-day Adventists in Australia have a close relationship with the Adventist Church in neighbouring Asia-Pacific countries. Other denominations have similar formal and informal connections. Our churches are, themselves, international bodies, says the submission. We represent bodies of believers, bound together in relationships of shared faith and love, crossing geographical, social, economic and cultural boundaries. Climate change in particular poses an urgent and increasing threat in the region, said the document. This is especially the case in the Pacific where relatively poor island nations are vulnerable to sea level rise, freshwater contamination, damage to crops and fisheries and increasingly severe extreme weather events such as flooding and cyclones, it reads.

With national and international politics seemingly turning away from generosity, it is heartening to see Australia s Christian leaders speaking up for a more just, generous and compassionate foreign policy, said Micah Australia national coordinator Ben Thurley. Australia s Christians want Australia to be a nation that acts as a good neighbour in a region where too many are still forced to live in poverty and vulnerability. Grace is not grace when it is unavoidable and irresistible. A gift imposed is not a gift, for it requires what must be freely chosen and received. For freedom Christ has set us free (Gal 5:1). Jesus is as gracious to those who reject Him as He is to those who celebrate His love. The challenge for my heart today for yours is to so align with Christ that I cease all my habits of resistance.
