1 It is well with my soul Rev. Rob Purdy Pastor Church Newsletter March 2018 March Calendar Joanne Wells Editor I m ready for a change in the weather. As much as I enjoy winter temperatures, I ve had enough of the wild temperature changes. I am so glad for the promise of Spring and Summer. Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 1 To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: 2 A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted; 3 A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; 4 A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance; We are in a strange time. We seem to be doing a lot of all the above; births and deaths, plant and harvest, kill and heal, break down and build up, weep and laugh.! As individuals, and as a church body, as we go through our various seasons, let s remember that every season is God ordained and that the Father loves us! Beware the 19 th of March, well, that s not the exact quote from Soothsayer, but the 19 th is the date of the church s annual Chili Cook-Off! Invite your friends and family to come and sample the different entries, or better yet, enter yourself! This is always a great time of fun, fellowship and food! Sign-up is on the bulletin board in the hallway. God bless, Pastor Rob 5 A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing; 6 A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to keep, And a time to throw away; 7 A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak; 8 A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace. NAMB s mission field is the United States, Canada and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa. This region contains diverse ethnic groups, languages and religions. Approximately 269 million people in North America do not have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Through your gifts to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering and the Cooperative Program, NAMB supports more than 5,000 missionaries and more than 3,800 chaplains who serve in difficult places where the gospel is often not welcome. Through Send Network, we help Southern Baptists plant new churches. In the last 100 years, SBC churches in proportion to population has dropped. By partnering with churches to train and deploy church planting missionaries, NAMB s goal is to help Southern Baptists plant 1,200 new churches annually in cities, small towns, college campuses and military communities. In 2016, NAMB launched Send Relief. Just as Southern Baptist Disaster Relief matches urgent needs with volunteers bringing help, Send Relief is expanding that to equip churches in addressing poverty, refugees, foster care and adoption and human trafficking. We re establishing Send Relief regional ministries to meet needs and offer long- and short-term volunteer opportunities. We are sincerely grateful for the prayer support and sacrificial giving of every Southern Baptist. You can be assured that we are committed to being the very best stewards with every dollar we receive. 6 March 2018 Lamplight A Matter of Significance I have experienced God s presence in my life in many ways, but one stands out from them all. A few years into my walk with the Lord I flew to Maryland for a family wedding. The setting for the wedding was nothing short of picturesque. There, on a wooded hill stood a craftsman house. The house looked-out over a sprawling meadow that was bordered with tall sycamore trees. My mom s meadow, affectionately called The Holler, bustled with the activity of wedding preparation. The weather was perfect. Puffy white clouds floated around the pristine blue sky. A light breeze stirred the sycamore trees. Early that morning I hiked into the woods. In the woods I found a felled tree where I sat and spent a few minutes with the Lord. While there, I listened to God s creation and watched as the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen unfolded before me. As the radiant sunrays filled the woods, the movement of light and shadow became a significant reminder to me that God is real. This experience came to mind during a recent DLife Group discussion about the call of Abram. More specifically Genesis 12:6-7: Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh at Shechem. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. The LORD appeared to Abram and said, To your offspring I will give this land. So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him. The original language (- she.chem ad ah.lohm mo.rah -) can also be translated as the Oak of Moreh at Shechem or the Big Tree of Moreh at Shechem. During our DLIfe discussion, someone asked What s so significant about the tree? The agreed upon answer was that the tree must have been a significant landmark in the area. It was also the place where Abram waited for his divine appointment with God. And at this pinnacle moment in Abram s journey, God promised this land to Abram s offspring. God s promise came first, then Abram worshipped. I don t know if Abram s worship was stirred by the promised land or by the promised offspring. Probably both, but at the end of the day we learn that God s divine presence always stirs up worship. It s been almost thirty-one years since I surrendered my life to the Lord, and I can mark more than one occasion on which the Lord has used sunrays to remind me of His presence and His promises. I for one am very thankful that God s creation is a constant reminder that I am His child. Trees seem to be a significant spiritual marker in Abram s journey with the Lord. In the same way, sunrays are a significant spiritual marker for me. So now I m wondering what s yours? Remember this you are loved, and you are always in my prayers. In Christ, Cheryl Significant Trees in Genesis -- ~ The Great Tree of Moreh at Shechem God promised the land to Abram s offspring. Abram built an altar to the Lord (Genesis 12). ~ The Great Trees of Mamre at Hebron The Lord appears to Abram. The Lord reveals His plans for Sodom and Gomorrah. Abram pleads for mercy on behalf of righteous people in Sodom (Genesis 18). Page 6
