2 This Sunday, Christ the King begins our annual celebration of Catholic Schools Week with Family Mass at 9:15 followed by our Open House until 11:30 and continues Thursday, February 1, with New Family tours at 8 a.m. Catholic Schools Week is a movement that students in Catholic Schools across the country participate in. Students nationwide will enjoy some fun and well-earned distractions during the deepest part of winter. Normal schedules are interwoven with National Geo Bee, rallies, field trips, games, Science Fairs, open houses, and the student s favorite Crazy Dress Up Days. I invite everyone in our Christ the King community to please join us for Sunday s Open House or Tuesday Night s Science Fair at 7:00 p.m. I especially encourage everyone with school aged children or even grandchildren to join us Thursday to tour the school while classes are in session. If you ve never visited CTK school before or maybe it s been years since you ve visited the last time you will notice some changes. Christ the King Catholic School has been a vital part of this Parish community since it first opened its doors in Some things have changed in these past 50+ years, some good, some less good, some just different. No one walks home for lunch any more. We no longer squeeze, an impossible to imagine, 50 students into classrooms full of arrow-straight rows of desks. Class sizes are more manageable and are broken into even smaller strategically leveled groups for things like centers and daily reading blocks. You ll now see kids working at standing desks, sitting on comfy seats in the library or sitting on pads that help to work out their wiggle. You will also observe students working cooperatively in groups to complete projects and tasks while teachers move around the room guiding students towards the day s learning objectives. You would be hard pressed to find a piece of chalk on campus, but every classroom has an interactive white board and speakers so that students can see and hear better from all over the room. Even today CTK still has a Hot Dog Room, though now teachers use it for prepping lessons instead of prepping hot dogs. However, parents still give generously of their time, talent, and treasure to keep up the tradition of Hot Lunch every Thursday. We have chickens now and a garden for food as well as a garden for prayer. Teachers, our Parish Priests, and the Religious Education team still instruct students in the Sacraments during their 2 nd grade year, we still celebrate the feasts of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Blaze and we gather for Mass in our student Faith Families every Friday morning at 8. Like before, CTK School has amazing, dedicated, and tragically underpaid Faculty and Staff but now they are no longer Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. The most important constant from 1961 is the wonderful students at this school. These kids are smart, kind, and funny. Students leave CTK prepared with the academic foundations necessary to excel well beyond the challenges of High School. Perhaps even more importantly, our students graduate with a centered sense of self that steadies and guides them in their lives outside of the school doors. Finally, now, as it was in 1961, it is the participation of this entire Parish community that makes this school so successful. This is your Parish School, and we hope you are as proud of it as we are. Without your generosity and prayers none of this would be possible. Thank you. Paulson Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 28, 2018 First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 The events in today s reading take place as the Israelites are camped on the shore of the Jordan River ready to enter the Promised Land. Moses is near death and is giving final instructions. He promises that after his death, God will still be with them through another prophet. Both Jewish and Christian readers have seen this as referring to the future Messiah. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 In this section of the first letter to the Corinthians, Paul is responding to their question about whether it is better to remain single or become married. Christ the King s Grief Support Workshop is a 7 week program that creates a safe and welcoming space for those experiencing the pain that comes with the death of a loved one. He should summon the presbyters of the Church and they should pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5:14). All are welcome to join us for a parish Mass and celebration of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the sick. Bring relatives and friends from local care facilities - those who are able to come. The sites are in Pleasant Hill, Concord and Pittsburg. Tutors provide academic and mentoring support to children from low-income homes in grades K-12.
