1 Parent Connection SWCS NEWS Dear SWCS Families, We hope each of you are as excited about the school year as we are! We are looking forward to another blessed school year, full of learning and adventure, all while nurturing God s call to love and serve others. We are excited to see new faces and welcome back familiar ones. We have spent the summer working hard to strengthen and enrich our academic program, strengthen our identity as a Catholic school, and put systems in place that will facilitate teacher/family communication in every classroom. We are proud and excited to launch the school year with our incredibly talented and dedicated teaching staff and your ongoing support and partnership! During this school year, we will build upon our mission to foster an environment of spiritual and intellectual growth. Our staff of qualified professional educators is committed to your children and are already looking forward to a positive and productive school year. We are continuing with The Leader In Me initiative, which teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader, (theleaderinme.org). Our focus in Year 3 will be empowering instruction through best practices, universal principles, data collection, as well as, through school wide implementation of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Also, we are implementing The Be Kind Program, whose mission is to enhance the education of students by teaching and modeling simple acts of kindness. This program will encourage students to treat others with compassion, dignity, respect, and a generous heart, (bekindfirst.org). At our Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday, August 30th at 6:15 PM, we will have committee members available for you to meet and greet, in addition to information and sign up sheets for various upcoming volunteer opportunities. SWCS Staff IMPORTANT INFORMATION Morning Procedure: Doors open at 7:30 AM and school begins at 8:00 AM. Drop off child(ren) by the name door in the South Parking Lot. FOR THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD (REN), if you park your car, please walk your child up to the door. Students arriving after 8:00 AM will receive a late pass from the school office and will be marked tardy. Students arriving late will need to have a parent bring them into the building to sign them in. Afternoon Procedure: School is dismissed at 3:00 PM. Students who are picked up will meet their parent in the school parking lot. Please walk up to get your child if you are not using the car line. Students who ride the bus will be dismissed at 2:40 PM. School Handbook: With school safety, student learning and teacher/family communication as our highest priorities, we have revised the School Handbook so that it lays out the policies and the procedures that we will follow during the school year. You will be able to access the Handbook effective the first day of school. Please read through the handbook with your child and sign the form stating that you have read and understand our policies. Uniforms: SWCS scholars probably wear school uniforms according to our dress code. Dress code will be enforced this year and we appreciate your attention to detail before you send your child to school. Families can purchase school uniforms at Lands End or Kohls (French Toast Brand). Cafeteria News: Breakfasts and Lunches are available to all students. Breakfast is served between 7:30-7:50 AM and costs $1.75. If your child is eating breakfast at school, please make sure they arrive before 7:45 AM. 4 NEED TO KNOW CYO Volleyball CYO Volleyball is open to all St. Wendelin Parish and School girls in grades 3-8. Please Shane Burnworth to sign up. School Pictures & IDs: September 14th All students will have pictures and ID photos taken on Friday, September 14th. Informational flyers will be passed out the first day of school. Fellowship Sunday: September 16th Parents and students in grades 7-8 will host Fellowship Sunday on September 16th after all Masses. Please stop by for doughnuts, coffee and juice. Extended Day Extended Day is after school care for students in grades K-6. It runs from 3:00-6:00 PM Monday through Friday. More information can be found on the school website. The registration form and fee must be submitted prior to your child s first attendance at Extended Day. Homework Help Begins: September 18th Homework Help will begin on Tuesday, September 18th. This program is available to K-5 students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-3:40 PM to SWCS students in grades K-5 at no cost to families. Sign up sheets will be sent home once school begins. Fees If fees, past tuition, registration, or new tuition arrangements for this year have not been made, please contact Jon Hay, Parish Manager, ( x402) immediately. T.R.I.P. Introducing Junior High Youth Ministry All students in grades 6-8 are invited to join St. Wendelin Youth Ministry (SWYM) for a Big Kid Pinterest Night on Sunday, August 26th from 6:00-8:00 PM in the Youth Room. Beginning with this event, there will be an opportunity each month for junior high students to grow in faith and community in a parish youth group setting. Future opportunities will be communicated in the coming weeks. 5 PARISH NEWS Parish Mission: September 9th On Sunday, September 9th at 11:15 AM, we will kick off our Religious Education and SWCS school year with a Parish Mission with author and speaker, Dr. John Wood. The whole parish is invited! Join us! Rite Of Christian Initiation Of Adults (RCIA) & Children Are you someone or do you know someone who Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized? Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation? St. Wendelin offers an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the meaning and beauty of the sacraments and liturgy for our lives, and the teachings and experience of being Church for one another. There are separate sections for youth. You are welcome to participate with us on Tuesday, September 11th at 7:00 PM in the Emmaus Room at the church. Feel free to bring your questions, your insights and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for children, ages 3-5, will begin on Sunday, October 7th during the 10:00 AM Mass at St. Wendelin Catholic Church. This spiritual formation for children takes place in a specially prepared environment called the Atrium. Within the Atrium, catechesis takes shape during weekly sections introducing the children to the Bible and the Liturgy.
