1 X265/10/01 NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS 2014 MONDAY, 26 MAY 9.00 AM AM RELIGIOUS, MORAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL STUDIES INTERMEDIATE 1 There are three Sections in this paper. Section 1 World Religions This section has two questions for each World Religion. You should answer both of the questions on the World Religion you have studied. Answer either Buddhism or Christianity or Hinduism or Islam or Judaism or Sikhism. Section 2 Morality in the Modern World This section has one question for each of the optional issues. You should answer all parts of the question relating to the issue you have studied. Answer either Gender or Global Issues or Medical Ethics or War and Peace. Section 3 Existence of God This section has one mandatory question. You must answer all parts of the question in this section. The skills of knowledge and understanding (KU) and analysis and evaluation (AE) are being assessed in this paper. When answering each question you should note the number of marks allocated to each skill as indicated after each part of the question. PB *X265/10/01*

2 SECTION ONE WORLD RELIGIONS Candidates must answer both questions for their chosen World Religion. BUDDHISM Reminder: You should answer both of these questions if you have studied Buddhism in the World Religions Unit. 1. The Goals What we are today comes from our thoughts of yesterday... Dhamapada 1 14 (a) What do Buddhists understand by the natural law of cause and effect? (b) Give two examples of skillful action. (c) Describe the Third Noble Truth. (d) Compassion is a very difficult thing to show in the modern world. Would all Buddhists agree? Give two reasons for your answer. 2. The Means (a) State two other objects you might find at a Buddhist Shrine. (b) Why do Buddhists worship? (c) What is the Fourth Noble Truth? (d) Buddhists should find following the Five Precepts easy. Would all Buddhists agree? Give two reasons for your answer. 3 KU 1 KU Page two

3 CHRISTIANITY Reminder: You should answer both of these questions if you have studied Christianity in the World Religions Unit. 1. The Goals Lord teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. Luke 11 v 1 (a) State two things Christians believe about prayer. (b) Give two examples of community prayer. (c) Describe what happens during an infant baptism ceremony. (d) It is better to be baptised when you are an adult. Would all Christians agree? Give two reasons for your answer. 2. The Means Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Father! In your hands I place my spirit! Luke 23 v 49 (a) State two ways Jesus suffered in the last week of his life. (b) Describe one way Christians remember the death of Jesus during the festival of Easter. (c) Give two examples of individual Christian service. (d) Beliefs are more important than actions. 4 HINDUISM Reminder: You should answer both of these questions if you have studied Hinduism in the World Religions Unit. 1. The Human Condition (a) State one of the main forms of Brahman worshipped by Hindus. (b) Describe the Hindu law of karma. (c) What do Hindus understand by Samsara? (a) Describe one of the four ashramas. (b) State the three margas. (c) What is meant by the principle of non-violence? (d) Every Hindu should follow the principle of non-violence. (d) Belief in Judgement should affect the way a Muslim lives their life. Would all Muslims agree? Give two reasons for your answer. 2. The Means (a) Salah is one of the Five Pillars, state one other. (b) Describe one difficulty a Muslim might experience when trying to keep the Five Pillars in Scotland. (c) In what ways should a Muslim prepare for Salah? 7 SIKHISM Reminder: You should answer both of these questions if you have studied Sikhism in the World Religions Unit. 1. The Goals (a) State the name of the first verse in the Guru Granth Sahib. (b) What do Sikhs believe when they say that God is the source of all things? (c) Describe what happened when Guru Nanak was invited to the house of Malik Bhaago. (d) It is difficult to overcome the self-centredness which keeps people from God. Would all Sikhs agree? Give two reasons for your answer. 1 KU 3 KU 2. 8 SECTION TWO MORALITY IN THE MODERN WORLD In this section there is one question for each of the optional areas of study. Candidates must only answer the question for their chosen area of study. 1. GENDER Reminder: You should answer this question if you have studied Gender in the Morality in the Modern World Unit. (a) Describe the historic female role in the family. (b) What is meant by media stereotypes? (c) Women are still treated unfairly in places of worship. Would all religious people agree? Give two reasons for your answer. (d) Describe the historic view of gender rights in the Developing World. (e) What religious teachings support equal opportunities in the Developing World? (f) The Developing World has greater problems to deal with than gender rights. How far would a secular viewpoint agree? Give two reasons for your answer. Page eight

9 2. GLOBAL ISSUES Reminder: You should answer this question if you have studied Global Issues in the Morality in the Modern World Unit. (c) We should care about how global warming will affect future generations. Would all religious people agree? Give two reasons for your answer. 11 4. WAR AND PEACE Reminder: You should answer this question if you have studied War and Peace in the Morality in the Modern World Unit. (a) State two reasons for using a nuclear weapon. (b) Describe two problems caused by possessing nuclear weapons. (c) Possessing nuclear weapons provides security. How far would a secular viewpoint agree? Give two reasons for your answer. (d) What is a conscientious objector? (e) Describe two reasons for going to war. (f) It is right to fight for your country in times of war. Would all religious people agree? 12 SECTION THREE EXISTENCE OF GOD Candidates must answer ALL questions in this section. In the beginning, when God created the universe, the earth was formless and desolate.
