It has been a busy summer but a good summer, and by the time you read this, the children will be back to school and it will be almost time for our fall programs to begin.

Wednesday night dinners. It has been a busy summer but a good summer, and by the time you read this, the children will be back to school and it will be almost time for our fall programs to begin. October 5, 2016 will mark the beginning of the Wednesday programs. The schedule of activities will be as follows: 5:00 to 6:00 PM Dinner 5:30 to 7:00 PM Olympians 6:00 to 7:00 PM Junior & Senior High Youth Group 6:00 to 7:00 PM Pastor Dave s Bible Study 6:00 to 7:00 PM Ladies Bible Study Verse of the Month For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. WEDNESDAY NIGHT FALL PROGRAMS BEGIN OCTOBER 5th The Word of Life clubs meet here at SBC from 5:30-7 pm each week. Their time together includes songs, games, a Bible story, and small group time.

2 WEDNESDAY NIGHT FALL PROGRAMS BEGIN OCTOBER 5th The Word of Life clubs meet here at SBC from 5:30-7 pm each week. Their time together includes songs, games, a Bible story, and small group time. Special theme nights are planned throughout the year. Olympians is for children in grades 1 through 6. Jackie Gengarella is the director of the Olympian Program. There are 3 levels of the Olympian groups Challengers is for the 1 st and 2 nd grades, Conquerors is for 3 rd and 4 th grades, and Champions is for 5 th and 6 th grades. The goal for the groups is to press on toward becoming better followers of Jesus. The children work throughout the year to earn their bronze, silver, and gold levels along with a prize. Chef Joe Taunton along with Pastor Dave will be preparing some of your favorite meals throughout the year. Entrees will include roast chicken, fried chicken, shepherd s pie, meatballs & pasta or meatball subs, Mexican night (enchiladas, tacos, and taco salad), roast turkey, roast loin of pork, and glazed meatloaf. Sides will include mashed potatoes, tater tots, roasted potatoes, glazed carrots, garden salad, pasta salad, green bean casserole, apple sauce, fruit salad, etc. Prices will remain at $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children; however, seconds will be an additional $1.00. In order to make this program successful, two to three clean-up teams are needed and would be greatly appreciated. In His Service, Pastor Dave Joe Taunton is director of food and beverage service at the Pleasant View Inn at Misquamicut Beach in RI. He is a self-taught chef and previously worked at the Shelter Harbor Inn and other eating establishments in Providence. Joe and his wife, Ashley, and their three children are SBC members. 2

6 SBC LIBRARY Karen Gouvin Librarian Over the past couple of months, the church library has gone through a major overhaul. We currently have over 1000 books in the library and we will be adding to it through new purchases and donations. I will be contributing to the newsletter with book recommendations, new purchases, and other information regarding the library. I am also happy to help anyone find a book to read or to hear your suggestions for new materials to add to the library. The best way to contact me is to see me in person or to send me an . Books to check out can be found on display in a rotating display rack in the hall behind the sanctuary and in the library (which is between the sanctuary and the double doors leading to the back of the building). Currently, you can sign books out using the sign-out sheet on the desk in the library. In the future, a new system may be developed, so keep your eyes open for that. Please return books to the shelf marked RETURN and not directly to the shelves. Please avail yourself to the outstanding collection of books that we have. I have seen so many books that I want to read, both old and new, fiction and non-fiction. We also... 6 (continued)

7 SBC LIBRARY have a basket of devotionals and Bible study books that you may take for your use. Please stop in and pick something up for your personal devotions, or check something out. In an effort to provide a library of excellent quality to edify the body, we now have a Mission Statement along with a Vision Statement to help us in this endeavor. MISSION STATEMENT In the beginning God spoke us into existence by His Word. For generations Holy men of God through the power of the Holy Spirit wrote the scriptures to lead us, guide us, and to enlighten us through these sacred writings to make us wise unto salvation through Jesus Christ. Since that time, men and women of faith have written testimonies of their faith and enlightenment in books to share the gift of faith with the world. To that end, the Second Baptist Church of North Stonington has provided and is maintaining a library to share the power of spiritual words with the members and friends of the church to keep their faith growing until He comes again. VISION STATEMENT The church library has the responsibility to serve as steward of media resources that strengthen and support the total church ministry. (continued) 7

DONATION AND GIFT POLICY In order for the church library to support the total program and mission of the church, all materials must be of the best quality and benefit for church members. A bin marked Donations will be located in the library for this purpose. All printed and audio/visual titles and other materials are subject to approval by the library staff and church leadership as necessary. Content of printed and audio/visual media should be accurate in facts, scripture interpretation, and doctrine. Media should be constructive in influence, morally sound, and free from racial and religious prejudice, political bias, social injustice, and any other indication of unchristian attitudes and actions. Dear Dad, Mere words cannot express the love I have for you. You have been more of a father to me than my own and have also filled that same role in many other s lives as well. The honorable man that you are and the kindness you bestow has set the standard far above the norm and has shown me in my years of being widowed what it is I hope to find in a future husband. (You ve set the bar high so my search has been quite difficult!) You love fully with your heart and your gentle ways overflow with everything you do. You are an extremely dedicated husband to your wife, a loving father to your children (which far extends beyond your blood relatives). You are a perfect example of what a Christian should be with the fruit of the spirit that you exude: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. I absolutely love how you love people: your nonjudgmental ways, and the giving spirit you have. You ve taught me how to stay focused on God in the midst of everything and have always pointed me to Him, and for that I am eternally thankful. Your years of hard work and service to our country have earned you the respect and trust that you well deserve. Your worth is far above rubies. The meticulous care and maintenance you have put into your home shows how multi-talented you are and a master of all trades. But it also shows how you love the art and beauty of making things with your own hands. Measure twice, cut once comes to mind as one of the thousands of simple, yet wise sayings you teach others. You love sharing your knowledge with anyone who has an ear to listen and I just love that about you because it shows you care. 13

14 Dee Dee s Corner A Father s Love You are a selfless reminder and example for us all to try to model in this crazy world. The love of Christ just radiates out of your sweet smile, kind eyes, and handsome face. If ever there was an angel here on earth, you re it for sure, Dad! Thank you for being who you are, each and every day. I thank God for bringing you into my life through the marriage of your son. In my heart of hearts, you are my dad, even though through adoptive means. Through thick and thin, you ve been there to guide me and help me see my worth and value as a woman and mother. You ve loved and accepted me as your own, and every time the words roll off my lips, I am proud to call you my dad. I love you with all my heart. 18 Writing a Letter or Sending a Card by Julie E. MacCormack Two of the largest greeting card companies, who together dominate some 86 percent of the greeting card business, are closing down stores everywhere. Like day follows night, most of us follow Thanksgiving with Christmas planning which often means there is a card list, an annual family letter, and adding new addresses for old friends and relatives that have moved. Currently, there are about 7 billion cards a year being sold but the number is projected to drop by 1.5 billion a year, according to the National Greeting Card Association. We all love to get greeting cards in the mail. Not just store bought ones, but especially a handmade card, which is always special. The desire to create something personal and to have it to be real to hold in your hands never ends. When I was young, I got a kick out of writing with a fountain pen and calligraphy. I enjoyed choosing just the right stationary or card for that special person. It is not just the elegance of the handwriting or the color of the ink; it is not the pen you are holding or the paper that you choose; it isn t even the seal or fancy stickers or stamps that you press. It is the special person that receives the letter that I want to impress. There are many people in my life that I know who could use a kind word to cheer their sorrowful day, to put a smile on their face, to make their day special by saying Everything will be okay!, to say Happy Birthday! or just How are you today? 18

It started when I was young, when my mother had me sit down and write thank-you notes, even sometimes when I had a frown. Now I realize that it was a special thing that she passed on to me. The lesson I learned is that it will make someone s ordinary day a little bit brighter. So when you think of this and the special people in your life, please stop to remember the memories and happiness that can be made with kind and loving words using paper and ink. Remember to write not just with the ink, but with the Spirit of the Living God in your heart that has given us life. Thinking of you For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:8-9) 19

Baked Apple Cinnamon Donuts 1 ½ c. flour 1/3 c. shortening ½ tsp. salt 1 egg, beaten 1 ¾ tsp. baking powder ½ c. milk ½ tsp. nutmeg 1 ½ c. coarsely grated apples ½ c. sugar Sift first 5 ingredients together. Add 1/3 cup shortening; mix until mixture is coarse. Set aside. In another bowl combine egg, milk and grated apples. Add to dry ingredients just until blended. Spoon into greased donut pan or 12 muffin cups. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. ½ cup melted butter ½ c. sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon While donuts are baking, melt ½ cup butter. Set aside. Combine ½ cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. When donuts are done, brush lightly with butter and sprinkle with sugar/cinnamon mixture. O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him. (Psalm 34:8) 20
