2 HOW TO USE THIS WORKBOOK This workbook is designed so that the whole family can use it together. If you have more than one child in our elementary ministry, you will all be working on the same passage together at the same time. Younger children will just be asked to memorize fewer verses than older children. The same passages will be revisited each year, with more verses added as they progress through elementary school. This arrangement provides the opportunity to reinforce what was previously memorized and to incrementally build towards learning longer passages of scripture. One or two passages is the focus for each month. The corresponding page is laid out with a colored panel on the left-hand margin indicating which verses each grade is to memorize. Some of the verses for the younger grades come in the middle of a paragraph, but the colorcoding makes it clear which ones they are responsible to learn. All the passages in this workbook were carefully selected as core truths that we thought would be wise for the children to memorize. Additionally, the Ten Commandments and the books of the Bible are also included starting in third grade. We envision this workbook to be a helpful resource that you can use as you disciple your children and work with them to memorize God s Word and teach them core gospel truths. All Scripture quotations, unless otherwise indicated, are taken from the Holy Bible, English Standard Version.

3 Memory FBC JAX ELEMENTARY MINISTRY Work As a kid growing up, you probably always looked forward to your birthday and Christmas because you were eager to receive gifts that you wanted. As parents, there is a complete reversal in why we anticipate these times of gift-giving. Instead of being so excited to receive gifts, we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to give gifts. There is almost no greater joy as a parent than to see your child s face light up in celebration when they unwrap that coveted gift they ve been wanting for so long. It s a God-given desire in us to take joy in giving good gifts to our children (Luke 11:13). As Christian parents, one of the best gifts that you can give your child as they grow up in your home is a mind that is filled with scripture. God s Word is more precious than any gold (Ps. 19:10) and helping your child hide it in their heart is one of the ways to avoid sinning (Ps. 119:11) because it arms them with the sword of the Spirit (Eph. 6:17). It is this gospel word that we are praying would not just be heard by our child, but also be accepted and then bear fruit in their life (Mark 4:20). It is our hope and prayer that by using this workbook with your child, God may graciously give your child the best gift of all, the gift of salvation (Eph. 2:8-9). And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 1 T HESSALONIANS 5: Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 11
