1 St. Agnes Catholic Community 1025 Masonic Ave. San Francisco, CA Inclusive Diverse Jesuit Dear Friends, August 8 & 9, 2015 Last week s gospel reading reminded us that Jesus is truly the Bread of Life. Our deepest hunger is satisfied by the presence of Jesus in our life. Our deepest hunger is making sense of this crazy world and our own life. Jesus answers that with an assurance that we are loved and are called to also love and serve. Each week at Eucharist we are reminded of our primary calling. We declare to one and all that we commit ourselves to: grow spiritually as disciples of Christ to become men and women for others build community through hospitality, ecumenism and social & cultural events understand cultural differences and accept them as sources of enrichment give loving service & outreach to those in need promote social justice issues in our neighborhood and in the larger community of city, nation, and world. It is interesting at the Last Supper, Jesus does not go into a long theological discourse. He simply says, This is my Body. This is my Blood. Do this in memory of me. The British theologian, Ronald Knox, speaking about the Eucharist, submits this: We have never, he claims, as Christians, been truly faithful to Jesus, no matter our denomination. In the end, none of us have truly followed those teachings which most characterize Jesus: We haven t turned the other cheek. We haven t forgiven our enemies. We haven t purified our thoughts. We haven t seen God in the poor. We haven t kept our hearts pure and free from things of this world. But we have, he submits, been faithful in one very important way; we have kept the Eucharist going. We may not understand the theology of the Eucharist but we must keep going. It will rub off on us or, as Augustine says, we will become what we eat. May we always be a Eucharistic People: Blessed, Broken and Given to others. We pledge ourselves to be a light in the darkness through the love that we share in the name of Christ and through the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Children s Care During Liturgy Care is provided for children 18 months through 5 years of age during the Sunday 10:30 AM Mass. Our Daycare Room is located across from the daily mass chapel and is open for all Masses. Parents with children under 18 months are welcome to use the daycare room as long as at least one parent stays with the child. Ignatian Spiritual Life Center The Spiritual Life Center (1611 Oak Street) provides programs and services to the parish and larger faith community through educational programs, opportunities for prayer, and community events. It houses a library, book center, garden, and chapel. Visit

Due August 15th Companions in Ignatian Service and Spirituality responds to the thirst of many Catholics to deepen their spiritual life as they give of their time and talent to serve those in need - the poor, the marginalized and the socially vulnerable. Ignatian Companions engages people 50 years and older in meaningful direct service to the poor while providing community and reflection experiences to enhance this faith commitment to social justice. My mantra quickly became Do not be afraid. Back to School Donation Opportunity Catholic Charities (CC) is offering a donation opportunity for you and your family. The Back-to-School donation equips youth from low-income families with much needed supplies for school. The supplies you donate help K-High School age. CC is seeking backpacks, school supplies, and Target gift cards to provide students with uniforms. The last day to submit donations is August 14 th. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? RCIA is the process by which adults become Catholic. Do you know someone who is interested in pursuing Baptism, Confirmation and full admission into the Catholic Church? Please encourage them to inquire about the RCIA program here at St. Agnes. 5 Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; And ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Stewardship Prayer Lord and source of all gifts, I rejoice in the fullness of your generosity. I thank you for those whose lives are visible signs of your love and blessing to others. Give me the courage to do the same. Make me a good steward of all I have received generously sharing my time, abilities and material resources to build up your kingdom of love and justice. We ask this through Jesus Christ, in whom we begin and end all things. Amen. Prayer of St. Francis (Prayer for Peace) Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life Amen.
