1 St. Agnes Catholic Community 1025 Masonic Ave. San Francisco, CA Inclusive Diverse Jesuit Dear Friends, May 9 & 10, 2015 Last week we celebrated the First Communion of twenty-six of our children. It was also a wonderful event for their parents and our parish. They are our future and to see such goodness and innocence gives us great hope. Last week s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles was striking. The early Christians were very wary of Paul s conversion. They knew him as one who persecuted Christians. It was Barnabas who vouched for Paul and who later will bring Paul from Tarsus to eventually become the great Apostle to the Gentiles. If Barnabas had not been around, we might never had heard of Paul. Maybe Barnabas was the only one who kept Paul connected to the early Christian community. We all have those people in our life who make such a difference. They are patient with us and bring out our best selves. Think of the parents of our first communicants who have patiently and thoroughly kept connected with their children through thick and thin. Yes, we need each other. We are very much like the image in last week s gospel. We are branches on the vine. Our foundation is Jesus who is the true vine. We live in relationship primarily with the Lord but we cannot forget our fellow branches. Some need help to bear fruit and that is our mission, to care and support others. Through our presence do we make people want to be better persons? That is not only the true test of friendship but also of Christianity. Let us be as Barnabas was to Paul. Finally, a Happy Mother s Day! John Paul I said it best, When you think of it, God is more like a mother than a father. Mothers have that special gift of communicating unconditional love. No person has played a bigger part in my own life than my mother. I am so grateful. We pledge ourselves to be a light in the darkness through the love that we share in the name of Christ and through the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Children s Care During Liturgy Care is provided for children 18 months through 5 years of age during the Sunday 10:30 AM Mass. Our Daycare Room is located across from the daily mass chapel and is open for all Masses. Parents with children under 18 months are welcome to use the daycare room as long as at least one parent stays with the child. Ignatian Spiritual Life Center The Spiritual Life Center (1611 Oak Street) provides programs and services to the parish and larger faith community through educational programs, opportunities for prayer, and community events. Ray will reflect on this text by one of his favorite authors, Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI. The book is a follow up to his classic The Holy Longing. Join in the gathering to celebrate our shared sense of purpose, our common visions and to share in our diversities. Please allow extra time to get to the 8:30 am & 10:30 am Masses. Oak St. will be open but Fell St. will be closed. Use 19 th Ave. in the park to reach St. Agnes from the North. Happy Mother s Day! We would like to wish all of the mother s and those who serve as mothers to so many, a very blessed Mother s Day. AAA Our 2015 Campaign has begun. This year s assessment is $78,800. Through the generous sharing of our financial gifts, we contribute to the support of the various works of the local Church including parishes in need, education, leadership, public affairs, worship and individuals in need. 4 St. Agnes Parking Approximately the end of May construction will begin on the Urban School building and we will lose access to our St. Agnes parking lot. The good news is that when the building is finished, we will have ample underground parking next to the church. During construction, St Agnes will have exclusive access to the John Adams Parking Lot at Masonic and Hayes for all our week-end Masses. The John Adams lot is just two blocks away, but if you cannot walk the two blocks, a valet service will be available. You will find full information and details at the back of the church. ONGOING AT THE IGNATIAN SPIRITUAL LIFE CENTER Monday Morning Mindfulness Mondays 9:30 am Start the week mindfully! Cathy Collins returns to lead us in Silent Prayer. All are welcome. All are welcome. Young Adult Ministry Our Christian Life Community for Young Adults meets on the 1 st Thursday of each month. 5 Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; And ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Stewardship Prayer Lord and source of all gifts, I rejoice in the fullness of your generosity. I thank you for those whose lives are visible signs of your love and blessing to others. Give me the courage to do the same. Make me a good steward of all I have received generously sharing my time, abilities and material resources to build up your kingdom of love and justice. We ask this through Jesus Christ, in whom we begin and end all things. Amen. Prayer of St. Francis (Prayer for Peace) Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life Amen.
