1 St. Agnes Catholic Community 1025 Masonic Ave. San Francisco, CA Inclusive Diverse Jesuit June 20 & 21, 2015 Dear Friends, I have recently reflected on two Jesuits who have been heroes of mine, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and Gerard Manley Hopkins. Both men were such great contributors to humanity and both became objects of praise after their deaths rather than before. Teilhard de Chardin s optimistic view of a world evolving towards Christ was treated with skepticism and suspicion. His death received no publicity as he was buried in New York rather than his native France. Yet now The Divine Milieu and the Phenomenon of Man are classics. Without a doubt Gerard Manley Hopkins poetry is celebrated today throughout the world but in his lifetime he received no notoriety. It is extraordinary that such genius was not appreciated. Both Hopkins and Teilhard de Chardin are giants in their own fields but unrecognized while alive. It is striking upon reflection that winning the praise of the world was probably not very high on their list of desires. They knew what God was doing with them. They knew what God was accomplishing in them and that gave them their greatest satisfaction. Humility is realizing that we were made by our Creator and our Maker continues to work within us. We are not self-sufficient nor do we possess any talent that does not have God as the source. In the meditation book Sacred Space we are called to ask for the grace to let ourselves be shaped by our loving Creator. To Teilhard de Chardin and Hopkins this meant more than the praise of the world. I am sure they took delight in what God was doing with them. This is humility. We pledge ourselves to be a light in the darkness through the love that we share in the name of Christ and through the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Children s Care During Liturgy Care is provided for children 18 months through 5 years of age during the Sunday 10:30 AM Mass. Our Daycare Room is located across from the daily mass chapel and is open for all Masses. Parents with children under 18 months are welcome to use the daycare room as long as at least one parent stays with the child. Ignatian Spiritual Life Center The Spiritual Life Center (1611 Oak Street) provides programs and services to the parish and larger faith community through educational programs, opportunities for prayer, and community events. We will have a reading group to understand and discuss this exciting new development in Catholic Social Teaching. During the first session, Bill O'Neill, SJ of the Jesuit School of Theology will offer context for this document and set the stage for our conversation. Rich Hayes, visiting scholar at UC Berkeley and Megan Pryor Lorentz, Director of the Ignatian Spiritual Life Center will lead the reading and discussion. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Are you interested in becoming a Catholic? RCIA is the process by which adults become Catholic. Do you know someone who is interested in pursuing Baptism, Confirmation and full admission into the Catholic Church? Please encourage them to inquire about the RCIA program here at St. Agnes. 4 AAA Our 2015 Campaign continues. This year s assessment is $78,800. Through the generous sharing of our financial gifts, we contribute to the support of the various works of the local Church including parishes in need, education, leadership, public affairs, worship and individuals in need. We are half-way to our goal this year, but we still need your help! There are cards in the pews, if you are able, please consider making a donation or pledge if you have not already. 5 Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; And ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Stewardship Prayer Lord and source of all gifts, I rejoice in the fullness of your generosity. I thank you for those whose lives are visible signs of your love and blessing to others. Give me the courage to do the same. Make me a good steward of all I have received generously sharing my time, abilities and material resources to build up your kingdom of love and justice. We ask this through Jesus Christ, in whom we begin and end all things. Amen. Prayer of St. Francis (Prayer for Peace) Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life Amen.
