Oct. 31 & Nov. 1, 2015 Dear Friends, There is something a bit wild, mad, and crazy about a saint. A saint may be an almost pathological worker like Peter Canisius, or as relaxed and casual as John XXIII. He may be as charming as Vincent de Paul, or as forbidding as Pius V. She might be as imperious as Teresa of Avila or as withdrawn as Juliana of Norwich. There is a wide variety of styles, personalities, talents, interests and commitments among the saints. They have even fought one another as did Peter and Paul. But there is one thing they all had in common: they were all a bit mad. What is the nature of this madness? At first it is difficult to discern. Saints seem to have more resources, be a little deeper, a little richer in their responses. They bounce back more quickly from defeat. They also see things differently. Usually saints are not starry-eyed optimists, yet they seem to be able to break through appearances more quickly than the rest of us to get to the fundamentals. Saints are able to look at the long-range, the very long-range like eternity. So it begins to emerge. What is different about saints is that they are happy. It is almost as though the beatitudes in this gospel are turned on end. The saint is able to be the kind of person described in the gospel because he/she is happy; he/she is happy to be a peacemaker, single of heart, meek, poor in spirit. Saints can crack through the frustrations, the disappointments, the wariness of daily life and come alive precisely because they know they are in the grip of passionate love which will never let them down. And in the end nothing that they do that is good, generous, gracious is ever wasted. The madness of a saint is the madness of a person in love. On the feast of All Saints, what we really celebrate is that such love is for all of us.

Children s Care during Liturgy Care is provided for children 18 months through 5 years of age during the Sunday 10:30 AM Mass. Our Daycare Room is located across from the daily mass chapel and is open for all Masses. Parents with children under 18 months are welcome to use the daycare room as long as at least one parent stays with the child. Ignatian Spiritual Life Center The Spiritual Life Center (1611 Oak Street) provides programs and services to the parish and larger faith community through educational programs, opportunities for prayer, and community events. Meditations on the Parables of Jesus Thursdays, Nov. 12 & 19 at 11am Come ponder the parables of Jesus as we meet to break open the word of Scripture. We continue to reflect using Meditations on the Parables of Jesus by Thomas Keating, the Trappist monk who developed Centering Prayer. Copies of the book are available for purchase. St. Agnes and St. Ignatius Parishes are being recognized at the California Interfaith Power and Light Cool Climate Prayer Service and Awards with an Honorable Mention for Education on Climate Change. The ceremony is November 10 at the Oakland Cathedral. Special thanks to Richard Hayes and Megan Pryor Lorentz for holding Community Conversations on Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si at the Ignatian Spiritual Life Center and for collaborating with other institutions to bring the Integral Ecology series to USF. Gatherings for Parents Messy Parenting, Part II - November 15 th St. Agnes Chapel - enter gate at 1520 Page Street Come join us for the continuation of the Messy Parenting workshop on Sunday, November 15 from 9:25 to 10:15 am. Join Maryellen Mullin, LMFT for practical and fun presentations with helpful tools for looking at how our emotions drive our behavior with children to support messy parenting moments. Even if you missed part 1, you are encouraged to participate. Coffee and tea will be served. Childcare available. November Remembrances During the month of November we commemorate All Saints and All Souls. You are invited to bring photographs of your deceased loved ones and place them in the windows of the Church. Also, you may write the names of your deceased beloved on paper leaves and attach to a banner that will be carried in Liturgical processions through November. Calling All High Schoolers CORE TEAM, open to all high school students, is a youth leadership training opportunity based on the values of our Catholic faith. Come grow in faith with friends throughout the Archdiocese! Monthly meetings include leadership training, service projects, mini retreats, and a weekend retreat in January. Team members have the opportunity to lead a Jr. High dayretreat in November or February, go on a weeklong summer mission trip, or to be leaders at Summer Vacation Bible Camp in SF. 4 AAA 2015 The AAA campaign continues on - this year s assessment is $78,800 from the. Through the generous sharing of our financial gifts, we contribute to the support of the various works of the local Church including parishes in need, education, leadership, public affairs, worship and individuals in need. Thanks to the generosity of several of our parishioners, we have a total of $41,526 in donations and pledges which leaves a balance of $37,274. 5 Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, Our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; And ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Stewardship Prayer Lord and source of all gifts, I rejoice in the fullness of your generosity. I thank you for those whose lives are visible signs of your love and blessing to others. Give me the courage to do the same. Make me a good steward of all I have received generously sharing my time, abilities and material resources to build up your kingdom of love and justice. We ask this through Jesus Christ, in whom we begin and end all things. Amen. Prayer of St. Francis (Prayer for Peace) Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
