1 2017 Newsletter Term 1 Edition Principal s Print Important Dates Tuesday March 21 Interschool Swimming Carnival Wednesday March 29 Manea Athletics Carnival Monday May 22 to Friday June 2 Semester 1 Examinations (ALL students) Wednesday June 21 Parent Teacher Interviews Dear Parents and Community Members - Welcome to the first newsletter for Term One is racing along and we have had a tremendous start to the year, with our enrolment reaching 490+ students and the addition of several new staff. Our new staff and students have transitioned into the expectations at Manea well and are enjoying the unique environment on offer. The success of our College also is due to the direction and leadership provided by the Manea Board and it was pleasing to see interest for vacant positions on the Board. We received seventeen initial parent expressions of interest to fill the vacant position/s. An election will be held shortly to fill position/s. In 2016 Manea had a very successful year with excellent student results and feedback from parents, staff and students indicating high levels of satisfaction with Manea. The College Annual Report will become available late in Term One and enable members of our College Community to gain an insight into the successes and identified areas for development in In preparing the annual report, we have reviewed our academic performance and are pleased with the results: A few highlights from 2016: Manea ranked as the number 1 public school and number 1 regional school for Certificate III or higher achievement. Over 50% of qualifications attained by Manea students were at Certificate III or higher in Manea students achieved 71% of all Certificate III and above qualifications achieved across the 10 senior school providers in Bunbury. Manea students completed over 29,000 hours of work placement in students joined the prestigious 99 ATAR Club 10 students achieved a 97+ ATAR 21 students achieved a 90+ ATAR (25% of our Year 12 ATAR students) Manea ranked in the First 50 Schools for WACE Achievement, coming in at number 47 with 97.30% Student, parent and staff surveys indicated very high levels of satisfaction in the following areas: The standard of education; The quality of the teachers; Teachers are confident in the content of their course; Safe environment; Young adult environment; and The leadership of the College. Meet and Greet BBQ Parents, students and staff mingled in an informal setting whilst enjoying a sausage sizzle with much of the food kindly donated by Coles Eaton Fair and Coles South Bunbury. There was a real buzz around the College and it was great to see such a large turnout. Reminder to parents when dropping off and picking up students For safety reasons and to assist with traffic congestion there is a dedicated area at the front of the College for picking up and dropping off students. Please avoid using the College s Visitor and Staff Car Parks. See attached map. Meningococcal Vaccination for Students The Meningococcal ACWY vaccination program is in response to a recent increase of meningococcal infection caused by a particular type of the bacteria, serogroup W. Individuals aged between years within the WA community will be targeted to receive this vaccine in order to reduce the spread of this disease. Why is the program targeting year olds? This age group experience some of the highest rates of meningococcal carriage and illness. Once infected, they can transmit the bacteria to people who are at increased risk of infection, including young children. It is expected that providing the meningococcal W (Men W) vaccine to this age group will reduce the spread of this potentially life threatening infection within the WA community. Why is this targeted vaccination program necessary? Although numbers are low, Men W cases have been increasing each year since 2013 with one case notified in that year and 14 cases in Two more cases have been notified in Prior to 2013, serogroup W was uncommon with only six cases diagnosed in the 13 year period from 2000 to Which vaccine will be used? The meningococcal ACWY vaccine will be used. This vaccine protects against four groups of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W and Y. The conjugate meningococcal ACWY vaccine Nimenrix, supplied in Australia by Pfizer will be used in this program How will the program work? In 2017, WA Health and local council nursing teams will conduct the vaccinations at schools to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. Additional vaccination clinics will be conducted at community health clinics to capture year olds and other age-eligible persons not attending high school. In 2018 and 2019 the program would target incoming Year 10 students only. Parents can expect to receive Men W vaccination consent materials through the College in Terms 2 /or 3. Japan International Expedition Proposed Japan International Expedition 2017 (December) A NEW OPPORTUNITY: In 2017, Harvey s WA College of Agriculture are planning to conduct an International Expedition to Japan and have recently asked Manea Senior College if any of our students might like to attend. The Expedition will have a contextualised approach around the agricultural/manufacturing industry and historical Japanese education, with some time assigned to sightseeing and rest and relaxation. Preliminary drafting of a timetable indicates a departure around the 2nd December 2017 and returning around the 16th December The current estimated cost is around $4000 per student to attend, which includes all transport, meals, accommodation and pre-booked activities. This is subject to change due to student numbers and exchange rates. This amount does not include spending money or money to buy gifts / souvenirs. 3 Health and Medical Specialist Program (HMSP) Scholarship 2017 We have the pleasure of acknowledging Vivienne Noonan as the 2017 Health and Medical Specialist Program Scholarship winner. Special thanks to P&N Bank for their valuable on-going sponsorship of the Manea Health and Medical Specialist Program. Vivienne embodies all the qualities we look for in her pursuit of excellence and endeavour across all areas in College life. Health and Medical Specialist Program - Guest Speaker Visit The HMSP students enjoyed the company of Michelle Howes who came to speak to students about Professional boundaries and Confidentiality in Therapeutic Relationships. She gave students a clear insight into the workplace and the standards of behaviour that would be expected as well as balancing that out with genuine care for your patient. Many thanks to Michelle for sharing her time and valuable knowledge. She will visit the program later in the year to follow up with students after their Work Shadow Placements. The Great South West Bed Race Year 12 Health and Medical Specialist students and Manea Emergency Services Cadets held a sausage sizzle and free dress day to raise money for The Great South West Bed Race. The race will be held on April 8th in Bunbury with all proceeds going to the hospitals oncology centres. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause and assist our students reach their fundraising target please give your donations to the MSC front office. Yr 12 Health and Medical Specialist Program Students have been exposed to several guest speakers over the last few weeks with feedback and information going in to their HMSP portfolio. They will soon be putting together their health promotion information ready for our Broome trip which is to be held in June. Certificate III Basic Health Care Certificate III in Basic Health Care training has launched successfully in 2017 with students enjoying a range of challenging and hands on scenarios to introduce them to the world of paramedical medicine. Realistic wounds and injuries are created with fake blood and various props, gory enough for any Halloween event!!! Once again guided by experienced St John trainers, this VET qualification option is a relevant and rewarding selection for students on a Certificate IV in Preparation for Nursing pathway in Year 12. Manea Senior College Emergency Services Cadet Corps Approximately 30 students from Year 11 and 12 have signed up to join this voluntary organisation held at MSC. The group is meeting every Wednesday during Mentor and lunch with the first camp held on March 10th to 12th. Any student may join at any time over the next few weeks with the State camp in April the main item on the agenda. Activities such as communication skills, fire management and cooking, rescue safety and animal welfare are some of the themes to explore for the 2017 year. Please contact our staff Peter Thompson, Berin Sluiter or Chelsea Blakers for more information. Certificate III in Events Students enjoy a variety of online study options at Manea. Tahnalya, Katie and Taylah enjoy a brief respite from pounding the keyboards to allow for a photo op during their Certificate III in Events study period. This is the second year that Manea has offered this individual pathway to students, with all of our 2016 students successfully attaining the qualification, enhancing their employment opportunities in the South West. GRAVITY ETC Gravity (Trampoline Park in Dalyellup) will be holding inclusive sessions for people with special educational needs, disabilities, and mental health difficulties, of any age. They are open to working with schools and service providers, and are keeping the cost down to $14 per individual, inclusive of their carer(s) or support workers. 4 Working to make South West young drivers safe drivers The Youth Driver Training Program (YDDP) aims to cut the number of young people who are injured or die on roads as a result of poor driving habits. As Deputy Chair of the YDDP and in my role of Principal of Manea Senior College, a school whose students already or are about to commence driving, I believe it vitally important to provide valuable education and training opportunities to our young people and their parents/ guardians.
