5 The goals for our students 1. ATAR (further study at university) OR Vocational Education & Training (VET) Certificate II, III or IV (workplace, further study at TAFE or University) AND 2. WACE (meets requirements for secondary graduation) [All students receive WASSA Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement]

6 2015/16: New WACE why the change? Now a certificate that demonstrates significant achievement over Years 11 and 12 Past WACE too easy 100% awarded in many schools Coincides with implementation of the Australian Curriculum Easy for parents whose first child is in Year 10 this year (the novices ) Some real changes for parents who have had a child go through the Old WACE (the veterans )

7 WACE (sometimes also called Secondary Graduation) Should be a target for all students at CCGS (projected 85% in WA) Not required for entry into workforce Required for some TAFE courses Required for University entry"

8 WACE requirements 2016 Students must: Complete 4 ATAR subjects (ATAR Pathway) in Year 12 OR Achieve a VET Certificate II, III or IV (General Pathway) in Year 12 AND Demonstrate minimum standard of literacy/numeracy via NAPLAN and/or OLNA by end of Year 12 AND

AND Complete at least 10 subjects across Years 11 and 12 which must include English, Literature or EALD in Year 11 and Year 12 Minimum of five subjects in Year 12 One course each year from List A (arts/languages/humanities) and List B (maths/science/technology) AND Achieve 7 C grades in total by the end 12 (3 of these in Year 12) grades can no longer be averaged Ds count for nothing! AND Sit the WACE examinations (ATAR courses)

11 WACE to summarise Six courses in Year 11 Five or six courses in Year 12 Seven Cs across Year 11 and 12 (3 of these in Year 12) Numeracy & Literacy through NAPLAN / OLNA At least one List A and one List B course ATAR or Cert II, III or IV

12 Two pathways to WACE - General or ATAR 1. General pathway plus Cert II, III or IV employment/tafe/university. 100% course work assessment no external examination 2. ATAR pathway university 50% coursework 50% external examinations (set and marked by SCSA and reported directly to TISC)

13 General or ATAR? Give serious consideration to doing General courses if results in Year 10 are not strong (below C grade) or if boy is in support class in this learning area The General Pathway offers a flexible alternative that includes industry-based experience whilst completing the requirements for WACE. Remember that the Cert IV in Year 12 can still lead directly to some university courses

14 General and ATAR? Students can choose some General and some ATAR subjects but need a minimum of four ATAR courses to achieve an ATAR Year 11 students can request to change from ATAR to General subjects after one semester without penalty (but timetable will probably be disrupted) Year 12 no changes allowed after about Week 5

15 TAFE Admission 14% of TAFE courses are competitive i.e. hard to get into 51% of TAFE applicants have a first preference for a competitive course Students are encouraged to study the highest relevant course of which they are capable, if aiming for entry into the competitive courses e.g MDT ATAR if trying for a Design/Technology course at TAFE

17 General pathway - Certificate courses Wide variety available, for example: Cert II (Year 11) in Engineering (day release) Cert IV (Year 12) course in Business Studies at Fremantle Education Centre (day release) Cert III (Year 11/12) and Cert IV (Year 12) courses in Fitness run through Daly Fitness at CCGS (timetabled) Ms Clarke can advise on the many other options available. 23 ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank) A number between 0 and Student s rank relative to all other Year 12 students An ATAR of equal to or better than 75% of the Year 12 school leaving age population

24 TEA conversion to ATAR Converting TEA to ATAR is done each year by TISC (Tertiary Institution Services Centre) 2013 minimum ATAR* for University entry: UWA 80 (average** scaled mark 62.6%) Curtin 70 (average scaled mark 56.4%) Murdoch 70 (average scaled mark 56.4%) ECU 55 (average scaled mark 44.3%) *Some courses will require a significantly higher ATAR **These averages may change slightly under the new system

31 The CCGS Timetable All students in Year 11 are expected to undertake 6 courses The timetable grid is constructed from initial course choices Where there are insufficient students choosing a course, it will not run Some courses will run at MLC parents/boys will be advised Year 11 and 12 General classes may be combined to provide a viable class size

There are no unacceptable combinations between ATAR mathematics courses Mathematics: Applications ATAR Mathematics: Methods ATAR or Mathematics: Specialist ATAR Scaled scores from only two mathematics courses may be used in the ATAR

36 General Advice Talk to son s tutor, HOH, teachers How is he doing in English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities? Consult past reports and live marks report Generally, it is unlikely that marks and grades will improve in Year 11 and 12, no matter how many new leaves are turned! (Past performance is the best predictor of future performance.) Unless your son is really committed to doing well in the courses he chooses for next year, expect his marks to drop There are no options for repeating a subject in Year 12

37 General Advice (contd.) Avoid becoming paralysed by the choice process! No single best combination Academic Achievement - choosing the most challenging course of which your son is capable will leave options open for further study Interests and motivation rather than scaling/friends/likely teachers etc Aspirations - University or TAFE? Personality resilience, anxiety issues Course prerequisites
