1 May 2015 Volume 8 Issue 5 Reverend Gregory J. Bentley, Pastor Motto The loving place that is Reaching, Growing, and Sending people with Christ. Vision Fellowship is a Christian ministry that glorifies God and transforms humanity by doing justice, living mercy, and walking humbly with God. Mission Fellowship is called to make disciples by leading people into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ and equipping them for the work of ministry in the church, community, and world. Goodbyes Are Not Forever Johnnie McAlpine Photo Credit: Christopher Gaines Jason Sellers (seated) and the Praise Team On April 26, 2015, Fellowship said goodbye to Jason Sellers, our youth and early service pianist/ director. He will return to Maryland to further his studies in music at the Peabody School of Music. During early morning service, The Praise Team sang a few favorite songs, I Will Wear a Crown and Glory (from Selma), led by Elder Moore and Ryan Gordon, who performed the rap sections. They all did a super job. As a special tribute to Jason, Fred Grant, Christina Woods, and Jasmine McKenzie brought the congregation to its feet as they sang two of Jason's favorite songs, Total Praise and He is Able. Early Morning service ended with a laying-of-hands on Jason and his mother as Reverend Bentley prayed a soulful and moving prayer of gratitude. At 11:00 service, Destine' Brown and Ryan Gordon expressed their appreciation for Jason's willingness to take the time to teach them the techniques of music and indicated how we all would miss him. Accompanied by Edwin Bliss and Wonde Nickolson, Galik and Gakari Horton-Burks sang a beautiful, beautiful tribute, the Prayer, asking God to protect Jason as he embarks on his new journey. We pray You'll be his eyes and watch him where he goes... Let this be our prayer, lead him to a place. Guide him with your grace, To a place where he'll be safe... We are blessed to have had Jason Sellers at Fellowship! Jason and his mom Meridian Street, Huntsville, AL Office Fax fpcsecretary1@gmail.com

3 Page 3 BlackLivesMatter Gospel Spring Jam Tommie Herndon and Johnnie McAlpine In light of present realities and after many hours of brainstorming on ways to bring the community together in an inter-generational, inter-denominational approach to continue efforts to examine solutions to help our youth and affirm the dignity of our Black community, Johnnie Mae McAlpine, Darlene Richardson, Tommie Herndon, Dexter Strong, and Jason Sellers decided to use social media and other forms of publicity to get the word out. As a result, the #BlackLivesMatter Gospel Spring Jam was birthed. On April 26, 2015, Fellowship Presbyterian Church hosted the outdoor event on its lawn at 3406 Meridian Street with about 200 guests in attendance. Free food was provided for everyone. The menu included chicken wings, fried fish, hamburgers, chips, assorted deserts, beverages and water. Food service was housed in the fabulous pavilion constructed by Mr. Norman Fletcher. It was a very cozy place for eating, a protection from the wind, and a great haven to listen to the music and speeches. Prior to the concert, Ms. Erica Fox (left) from Alabama A and M (WJAB) and Mr. David Person at WEUP conducted interviews with Dexter Strong, Reverend Gregory Bentley, and Jason Sellers; they elaborated on recent issues that have rocked the nation involving black men and policemen. The interviews helped to promote the event by defining its purpose. The event on Sunday was hosted by the talented and charismatic Erica Fox, who made the program flow flawlessly. Reverend T.C. Johnson set the stage for the event with informative remarks as only he can do! The HAND of Fellowship Grove United Methodist Church; Madison Mission Seventh Day Adventist Church; the very talented Mr. and Mrs. Earl Fitchard; Spoken Word Artist Trainiesa Caldwell; and the very gifted saxophonist, Alex Banks. Directing the children s and youth choirs and the Mass Choir was the musically gifted Mrs. Darlene Richardson. She also directed the mass choir s final number Total Praise, which was an electrifying, beautiful sound. Nathaniel James Griffin provided the sound. The entire musical performance was accompanied by Ryan Felton on drums, Dannie Newton on bass guitar, and Jason Sellers on keyboard. Dexter Strong provided an arousing speech on the reasons why we should pay attention to social justice and educational issues in our communities and should be about the business of saving our children. We appreciate Ms. Trainiesa Caldwell and Ms. Linda Burruss, who were on duty the entire time to provide information on the Affordable Care Act, HIV/AIDS and Voter Registration; Mr. Darius Banner, who provided the opportunity to purchase BlackLivesMatter T-Shirts; Mr. Thomas Ross, who provided information on the History of Boy Scouts of America; a Selfie Booth, which was available for the anyone to express his or her opinions on social media; and Mrs. Carolyn Jackson, who provided face painting for the children. Words cannot communicate how appreciative we are for the support of the Fellowship family: Reverend Gregory Bentley; the men of Fellowship Presbyterian Church, who handled parking, preparation of the grounds, and setting up tables and chairs; Mr. Thomas McAlpine and Mrs. Jerita Crummie, who provided technical support; Mrs. Joyce Pettis Temple and Mr. Christopher Gaines, who took pictures; our youth and their parents, who served in many capacities; Mr. Tim Smith and the Food Crew; the Deacon Board; and everyone for your random acts of kindness, your thoughts, and your prayers. 5 Page 5 Invited to Transport Passengers on the Fellowship Bus? You Must be Verified Driver First! Helping the Community During an Emergency In a partnership between Fellowship Presbyterian Church and the Food Bank of North Alabama, Fellowship will be a site for emergency meals distribution during a crippling emergency to the surrounding community. Prepared food will be trucked to the site and dispersed from the truck to those needing it. If a Fellowship group or ministry team wants to use the Fellowship bus for transportation, can they choose a licensed driver from among their group, get the bus key, and drive off? Absolutely not! When Fellowship was blessed with a small bus, a conscientious committee formulated policies and guidelines to protect this valuable resource and to assure (as much as possible) the safety of all passengers. Specifications for drivers are a major part of the emphasis on keeping the bus and the passengers in the best possible driving hands. Here are a few of the important policies. All groups expecting to engage the bus should read the Bus Usage Policies in the Manual of Administrative Operations, pp Quarterly Family Dinner Rescheduled The first quarterly dinner (now occurring in the second quarter) is scheduled for Friday, May 15, at 6:00 p.m. The program emphasis will be on emergency preparedness at Fellowship. Come enjoy the fellowship and learn more about staying safe in different kinds of emergency situations at the church. Mr. Frank McKenzie of the Huntsville Fire and Rescue Department will be special speaker. The Witness & Service Ministry Team is organizing the evening. Checkout Fellowship on the web: The application form for bus usage is due two week before the date of use. (Application forms may be found in the Manual or in the wallmounted rack next to the office door, and Norman Fletcher should receive the applications.) The driver should be one of four persons listed on the insurance policy for the bus. The bus should not be returned with less than ¾ of a tank of gas. The bus trip log must be completed by the driver. Invite a friend to church.
6 Page 6 Evangelism Teachable Moment By now you have likely heard that the Evangelism Ministry Team is embracing our core practice of Intentional Faith Development by sharing valuable lessons from the text, Evangelism Explosion (or EE). EE was authored by the late Pastor D. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. EE is the spiritual response to the population explosion. As the population continues to increase and multiply, so must the number of Christians who realize and accept the responsibility and privilege to witness for Christ. The Evangelism Team is midway through the book. In order to keep the earlier content fresh in our hearts and minds and to begin to engage and train the congregation, each month various committee members will render a strategic synopsis of a portion of the text that is consistent with the prior month s Teachable Moments. Please continue to keep the entire Evangelism Ministry Team lifted up in prayer as we continue to study and prayerfully discern how effective evangelism is demonstrated through EE and will manifest within Fellowship Presbyterian Church and spread into the greater Huntsville community, the state of Alabama, this great nation and indeed the world. Elder Lauretta P. Moore. The author of EE suggests that effective evangelism requires friendly relationships. It is crucial that we spend time and effort to befriend those with whom we want to share our faith. We befriend by listening, getting to know them, and cultivating a warm and caring relationship, and then we earn the right to ask personal questions and share with them the Gospel. The tie-in is with two of our core practices, Intentional Faith Development and Radical Hospitality. After training Christians to build friendships with non-christians, then we must equip them to lead naturally and inoffensively into the Gospel (EE, 1996). The statement prompted thought about one of the lessons in Discipleship Essentials on witnessing. The lesson stated that in order to be an effective witness, we need to reduce anxiety by letting our joy of the good news flow with the belief that we have the best news to offer. Lastly, we need to be equipped with the skills to communicate the gospel effectively. Evangelism is about encouraging, equipping and empowering saints to spread the Gospel. Deacon Diann Bentley The text states that there are four stages of EE Ministry. Deacon Bentley presented the first two: Friendship and Evangelism. The last two stages are Discipleship and Healthy Growth. According to EE, Discipleship best takes place within the context of three levels: 1) New Believers and Spiritual Parents- whereby spiritually, functionally, mature Christians take responsibility for discipling their spiritual children into mature believers. 2) EE Participants and Other Members of the Church- whereby effective prayerpartnership relationships are forged and nurtured, and 3) Trainer and Trainee-on-the-job training, whereby experienced lay evangelists mentor novice evangelists until they are equally as proficient at sharing the Gospel. The Healthy Growth process builds a safety net of sorts around sinners, having been newly transformed into believers, which have been drawn to the church by disciples that have been empowered and equipped to unapologetically spread the Gospel and draw unchurched men and women into nurtured, healthy, consistent relationships with fellow believers. EE states that the church that properly applies EE ministry will therefore experience healthy spiritual and numerical growth. For Fellowship, the said growth may require a paradigm shift that transcends our norm(s), but by faith, we stand in great anticipation of how God will equip each one of us to embrace change and accept the call for Evangelism as an everyday way of life.-elder Lauretta P. Moore
7 Reverend Bentley s Quips and Quotes When God has promised to bless us, we can t tell him how to do it. Sermon, February 10, 2015 Rescheduled Event: Book on William Hooper Councill to be Presented at Fellowship On May 16, at 10:30 a.m., following the Presbyterian Men s meeting, Mr. Eddie Davis, Jr., will present his study of the life and trials of William Hooper Councill, which culminated in a 291 pages book. Davis, a graduate of Alabama A&M University, credits his curiosity about Dr. Councill to an undergraduate research paper he wrote about Dr. Councill and to the high regard that Dr. Homer McCall demonstrated when speaking about Dr. Councill in one of Davis classes. Davis, a soil scientist, dedicated several years to further reading and researching to produce his book. He took the title, The Greatest Negro the Race Ever Produced, from an accolade extended to Dr. Councill by the Secretary of the State of Alabama in the 19 th century. Come prepared to learn many unknown facts about Dr. Councill s untiring efforts to secure the future of his beloved Alabama A&M University and his ceaseless battles to keep his dignity while navigating the racial upheavals of the 19 th century South. They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.
