1 Volume 6 Issue 8 Fellowship Presbyterian Church 3406 Meridian Street, Huntsville, AL Office Fax fpcsecretary1@gmail.com The HAND of Fellowship (Helpful and Nurturing Disciples) August 4, 2013 Presbyterian Youth Triennium Destine Brown Reverend Gregory J. Bentley, Pastor Motto The loving place that is Reaching, Growing, and Sending people with Christ. Vision Fellowship is a Christian ministry that glorifies God and transforms humanity by doing justice, living mercy, and walking humbly with God. Mission Fellowship is called to make disciples by leading people into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ and equipping them for the work of ministry in the church, community, and world. The Presbyterian Youth Triennium, a national youth conference for high school students all over the world, was held at Purdue University in Indiana. The theme, I AM, was perfect for me, a girl who does not easily make friends and can never figure out who she is or where she fits. By the end of the week at the Triennium, I and others like me, who also don t (L-R) Destine Brown, Savannah, and Madison know who they are, had no doubt about who we are as individuals. I will never forget my experience there. I want to explain some of what I experienced at the conference in small groups, through worship, at the treehouse, and with my new friends. During small groups, I met many wonderful people. It was very easy to talk to them because we all were there for the same purpose: to find out who we were. We talked about our hopes and fears, how to help people who are less fortunate than we are, and how to bring our experiences back to our churches to make a positive difference. During these discussions, we got a chance to know each other better, which, from a teenager s point of view, made discussions more understandable. Like the small group experience, worship at Triennium was amazing. Everyone could sing with the band and skits were done by people our age about some of the things we experience in everyday life. 3 Volume 6 Issue 8 Page 3 (Continued from page 1) the worship services, three teens, who came from different parts of the world, made the rest of us realize how good we have it living in the United States of America. Our nation is not perfect, but we are not being murdered because we want to read the Bible or pray to God. Those three teens taught me something. The small group experience was a good warm-up for the treehouse adventures. The treehouse was a cool hang out spot for everyone. Different church denominations set up tables for exhibitors to show what they were doing and how they were helping others. At one of the tables we learned about working to end hunger by sending people bags of food with six meals in each bag. In a small group we conducted a service project and helped make the food. Triennium also offered a college fair that included the different Presbyterian church colleges and seminaries for those who feel called by God to become preachers of tomorrow. We also received tips on picking the right college for us, which could turn out to be very helpful to me. My favorite part of this whole experience was the new friends I made. I met people from South Alabama, Taiwan, and from all over the US. I found it easy to talk to them because they cared and understood my problems. I hurt my knee Friday morning Mrs. Ricks before choir practice, and I had to limp back to the dorm. Nobody knew I was hurt until Mrs. Ricks saw the way I winced in pain and asked what happened. She promised to take me to the EMT after worship. After choir practice we went to meet Savannah, Madison, Brooke, Karleigh, and Trudie at the Treehouse. When they saw I was hurt, they helped me walk to other places. The only problem was the five flights of stairs to the balcony for our choir performance, but Mrs. Ricks was by my side the whole way. She kept her promise and took me to the EMT after worship. Hours later we went to our last small group, which was very special to me. We all decided to take pictures of our group, but I would not have been in the picture if everyone had not come together to get me in the picture. I learned that these friends were nothing like the people at my school. They cared enough about me to carry me where we were going to take the pictures and carry me back with no complaints. I learned that day who my true friends really were. My experience at Triennium was one I never expected but one I am glad I had. I thank Ms. Crummie for giving me a chance to come out of my comfort zone without leaving me completely on my own. I also thank Mrs. Ricks for taking great care of me, as if I were her own daughter. And lastly, I thank Brooke, Karleigh, Trudie, Madison, and Savannah for listening to me and helping me open up to the great experience of Triennium. 4 Volume 6 Issue 8 Page 4 The Reevis Beecher Hill Benevolent Fund For many Mrs. Reevis Beecher Hill will be remembered as an inspired dream that pushed them out of their ruts and gave them wings to fly. She was genuinely concerned about the health and well being of others through their physical and emotional struggles. From Gifts Remembered by Mrs. Tommie Herndon Mission Benevolence is defined as an act of kindness, charitableness, good will, generosity or expression of Christian love intended to address the needs of the poor and distressed. Late charter member Reevis Beecher Hill exemplified these characteristics in life; her motto was, If I can help somebody, I will. Her legacy of generosity as well as her service and devotion to Fellowship Presbyterian Church (FPC) inspired her granddaughter and grandson-in-law Karla and Patrick Lee, to donate $5, to establish a benevolent fund in her memory. Helping Families Since its inception, the fund has given aid to over one hundred and ten different families, which has totaled over $9, This would not have been possible without the generous giving of members of the congregation. Families have been helped in ways that provided for their livelihood and enriched their lives.

7 Page 7 The HAND of Fellowship Fellowship Member Sick List The Prayer of Faith James 5: Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing songs of praise. 14 Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed.
