"The inquisitive mind of a child" Why are they selling poppies, Mummy? Selling poppies in town today. The poppies, child, are flowers of love. For the men who marched away. But why have they chosen a poppy, Mummy? Why not a beautiful rose? Because my child, men fought and died In the fields where the poppies grow. But why are the poppies so red, Mummy? Why are the poppies so red? Red is the colour of blood, my child. The blood that our soldiers shed. The heart of the poppy is black, Mummy. Why does it have to be black? Black, my child, is the symbol of grief. For the men who never came back. But why, Mummy are you crying so? Your tears are giving you pain. My tears are my fears for you my child. For the world is forgetting again. Author Unknown Rutherglen West and Wardlawhill Parish Church is a congregation of the Church of Scotland and a Charity registered in Scotland, Charity Number SCO

PASTORAL LETTER This time of year is full of remembrances/ celebrations of various past events, all of which would seem to have some bad news attached to them. Firstly there is Halloween, an evening of remembering and celebrating the spiritual underworld of witches, warlocks, ghosts and ghouls. Many Christians refuse to celebrate such an event, although it was the Christian Church who started the celebration many centuries ago. The reason was because the next day, the 1 st of November, is All Saints Day when we remember all those who have gone before us into heaven. O When The Saints Go Marching In does not refer to St. Mirren or any other football team, but to those who have defeated evil, and conquered death in Jesus Christ. So the night before All Saints the Christian children were encouraged to dress up as the most evil person they could think of because they were defeated by Christ and had no further power of the people. The children were making fun of a defeated enemy, and helping to celebrate it. Guy Fawkes Day has a similar theme. Guy Fawkes famously tried to blow up the House of Lords at the official opening of parliament when the royal family, all in the Lords, and all in the House of Commons would have been in for the ceremony. Had Guy Fawkes managed to do this it would have been by far the most serious act of terrorism ever in the UK. All three tiers of government would have gone in one fell swoop. However one of his team told the authorities and as he was about to light the fuse he was arrested and 3 executed. We remember the event with all kinds of dummy (controlled) fires and fireworks to replicate the possibilities had the gunpowder ignited, and place our executed Guy on the top of the fire as a reminder (and as a warning) to any future terrorist. On the day called Remembrance Day, the Sunday nearest to the 11 th hour, of the 11 th day of the 11 th month when the Armistice to end the First World War was signed, once again we remember horrific acts of violence, death and war that have taken place in the 20 th and 21 st centuries, involving British and Allied soldiers, seamen, airmen and others lost (or injured) in battle. Once again there are some who won t celebrate such a day, preferring white poppies of peace rather than the blood-red ones worn by the vast majority, not wishing to be part of a celebration of the horrors of war. The remembering of all these events has an important role to play in our life. They remind everyone of the malevolence that is part of our human experience, the horrors of evil, war and death. These relate to the social and communal level of our experience, but at a personal level this is also true as we can have physical scars that remind us of our frailty and in some cases our stupidity. (We also of course have deeper scars, even psychic ones, related to hurt and pain too deep to see, but no less real.) All of the remembering is about making sure we and future generations do not forget the evil, the destruction, and death that people or nations want to bring into our lives. It is a reminder that THIS SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.

The celebratory part is not a celebration of the evil, but rather a celebration that no matter what has been thrown at us we have come through, and out at the other end, often sadly thanks to the sacrifice and dedication of others, but ultimately, victory has been secured, the enemy defeated and good is to reign once more. Clearly the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ is the divine stamp on such experiences. God in Christ has been there with humanity in all its pain and sorrow, conquering evil, and the horrors that human beings do to each other, and He will bring us through to final victory in the end, both of our lives and the end of history. Meanwhile in our remembering and our celebrating let us not forget our commitment to work and witness for peace, justice and goodness throughout our community and beyond. PASTORAL CARE GROUP The Kirk Session has intimated its desire to set up a group of people who will organize the contact from the congregation for those in care homes and those too frail to attend church on Sunday mornings. Anyone presently doing this work, or interested in becoming a visitor within a church team, if you could please come to the Vestry on Tuesday, 14 th November at 12.30pm (after the Friendship Cafe). This is a daytime meeting since it is expected that the visits will be done during the day. Those who are interested but can t make the meeting, please communicate your interest to Malcolm preferably before the meeting. THINKING OF JOINING US? We are aware of a number of people in the congregation on a Sunday morning who are not members of the congregation and we would like to help you to join. There are two ways in which you can become a member of the congregation. The first is to join by profession of faith.

Normally you would attend a series of classes informing you of the basics of the Christian faith and the structures of the Church of Scotland. If you would like to join us that way Malcolm is running classes through the month of November on a Monday evening at 6.00pm. The first class will be on Monday, 6 th November in the Vestry. These classes are open to anyone. There will be no pressure to join, so you can sit in on the classes simply out of interest. Any long-time member who wishes to refresh their understanding is also welcome to join us. If Monday evening doesn t suit then please speak to Malcolm and he will try to find a suitable time to meet. The classes would normally last about 30 minutes. The second way you can join is by resolution of the Kirk Session. This is usually used by people who have been a member at some time of another congregation or church. They simply write to the Kirk Session stating their desire to join or transfer and the Kirk Session can simply agree to take them into membership. If you would prefer to join us in that way please give your letter/note to Malcolm or to the Session Clerk, Mr. Ian Duncan, stating your name and address and signing it at the bottom. We look forward to having you on board!! P.S. If you are a member and know of someone who isn t please give them this information with grace and gentleness!! INTO THE FUTURE At the last Kirk Session meeting the main item of the agenda was to set the priorities for the congregation in the next five-year period. A number of people were involved in discussions during the summer about this, and the Session has confirmed those issues that we will take forward for discussions with the Presbytery whose agreement we require. They are as follows:- 1) REDEVELOPMENT OF THE SANCTUARY. This will involve the removal of the gated pews on the grounds of Health & Safety, comfort and easier access for disabled and young children in prams. Due to the present under-pew heating and the age of the boiler, a new more cost-effective heating system will be installed. Part of the redevelopment will include a modern audio-visual facility, allowing for developments in worship and making the sanctuary a multi-purpose area. 2) THE EXPANSION OF THE RANGE OF WORSHIP SERVICES. Plans will be developed to provide services in different places for different people both within the redeveloped sanctuary and in the wider community. Care homes, schools, community rooms even pub or social club lounges could be used for the worship of God in the future. This includes the continuing support to the local Orange Order, and Masonic Lodges for their services. 3) PASTORAL CARE REORGANISATION. A new pastoral care committee will be developed, initially to take responsibility for a more regular visiting agenda for people who are in care homes or largely housebound, 5

unable to make church on a Sunday morning. This group will also take on responsibility for a much more systematic follow-up to people who come to us for funerals, weddings and christenings. This group will be open to anyone in the congregation who would help to provide a service of care to those in and around the congregation and community. (See enclosed intimation of first information meeting about the group on page 4.) 4) DEVELOPMENT OF AN ONGOING CHRISTIAN EDUCATION STRATEGY. From new communicant classes to study groups to teaching meetings at Lent and/or Advent, and even possible Daily Bread teach-ins for those who use the Bible Study notes. These are just some of the ideas to encourage people to meet together and enhance their knowledge and sharing of the faith they profess. 5) SUSTAINING OF THE PRESENT ORGANISATIONS. The Kirk Session wants to support the work presently being done by the Guild, Boys Brigade, Scouts, Guides and Sunday Group within the congregation and community. 6) ENCOURAGING COMMUNITY USE OF THE BUILDING. As a service to the community the use of the buildings by local outside groups will be continued and developed, that we might be seen as a resource for the good of the community and individuals within it. 7) ENCOURAGING ECUMENICAL RELATIONSHIPS. The congregation will continue to play a significant role in the various organisations and events that make up the work of the wider church e.g. The Rutherglen Churches Together, the local foodbank, and the Reachout 6 Trust, and will seek to develop the support of chaplaincy work in schools and care homes. 8) DEVELOPING INTEREST IN THE MISSION WORK OF THE WIDER CHURCH. The congregation will play a role in supporting the work of the Priority Area Committee, responsible for the support of the congregations of the Church of Scotland in the poorer communities, including ourselves. We will continue our support of the local Christian Aid Committee, and of the Presbytery s Lodging House Mission. We will seek to link with an overseas mission agenda, which we presently don t have, possibly through the Church s World Mission Dept. This is a large amount of work setting these goals for ourselves. The Presbytery has afforded us a part-time post to work alongside the minister to help it come to fruition. The Kirk Session decided that the skill base best required to help the process towards being a sustainable congregation with a Priority Area focus was someone to take the good news of Christ to the poor and marginalized in the parish, and to help set up appropriate forms of worship, education, fellowship and service. The working title for this person is presently an Evangelist for the Poor. The Kirk Session hopes that the congregation will get behind the priorities it has given the congregation, and hopes too that the wider church will also support the vision set before us. Malcolm

SESSION CLERK S LETTER We will REMEMBER THEM. The 12 th of the month is Remembrance Sunday and our uniformed organisations will be on parade to show that they also Remember. The Boys Brigade, the Scouts and the Guides will be at church and at the Cenotaph following the morning service and it really is great to see these young people turning out to remember men and women who have given them the freedom of speech and general freedom to live their lives without tyranny. WE WEAR OUR POPPIES WITH PRIDE because some made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their today for our tomorrow. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. Jesus commanded us to love one another, just as He loves you. Remember, Jesus gave up His life so that we will have eternal life and my friends what a great privilege it is to have the Son of God to die for you and me, I don t know about you, but I struggle to be able to take in the fact that He did that for a sinner such as me, but He did. The greatest love a person can have for his friends is to give his life for them. It s not just the generations of the two World Wars who were a special breed, prepared to suffer untold hardships, and many even death for you and me and a freedom from tyranny. Lots of soldiers, airmen and sailors died for you and me and they didn t know us and we still have men and women in this day and age who are sent to far-off lands to fight to secure peace in those lands and to stop terrorism coming to this country to inflict death and injury on innocent men, women and children and for what reason? Is it to punish us for voting (or not voting) for our government? Some of these service personnel even today come back severely injured physically or mentally and some don t come back. This is why we must never forget Lest We Forget is a slogan that leaves a question, what will the future hold if we forget? All of mankind must learn from the mistakes of the past lest we make the same mistakes again and again. War proves nothing except that one side has better weapons or a bigger army. Just look at the pictures on TV of the destruction of towns and cities in the Middle East, of the destruction in terms of human lives there are lives that are scarred and will never be healed. War heals nothing and that is the lesson that the younger generation needs to learn from past and present wars. In Flanders Fields. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The Larks, still bravely, singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. 7

We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow. The message is there in that poem for us today, To you from failing hands we throw. The torch; be yours to hold it high. We must keep the light from the torch up for all to see and NEVER forget. and we feel we have to do something to say thanks to them for putting their lives on the line to keep us safer in this country. To all of the Tesco shoppers who gave us a contribution, we say a most sincere thank you on behalf of those who gave of themselves. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning we WILL REMEMBER THEM. Wear your POPPY with pride to say thank you and to REMEMBER those who gave for you. God bless, J. Ian Duncan I ve never heard a minister at any Remembrance Day service glorify past or present wars, I ve only ever heard of thanks for the sacrifice and that we should never forget and not let it happen again and that s why I believe that it is important that our young people attend on this special day to be informed of the uselessness of conflict aligned to the love of our Lord Jesus who s message is still the same today as it was over two thousand years ago Love One Another, just as I Love You. A couple of weeks ago Jean and I spent our Saturday and most of Sunday at the Tesco supermarket in Dalmarnock Road and the same thing was happening at every Tesco store throughout the United Kingdom. We were collecting money for the Help for Heroes charity. We collected at this store in aid of wounded service personnel because these fine young people are still being killed or wounded in this day and age 8

How do we communicate today? How many of us regularly send or receive letters from our friends or families? Not many, I suspect. We now pick up our mobile and can see and chat to them even on the other side of the world. My wife and I see and speak to our grand-daughter, and her parents, almost daily even though they live 200 miles away. The ways in which we communicate with each other has changed dramatically over the years. Many of us now receive the news and weather through our phones, computers or tablets. Fewer and fewer of us are buying newspapers. A few weeks ago I attended a Church of Scotland meeting on communications and social media. One of the facts that came out of the meeting was that many churches are now using social media to keep its members, and the local community, informed. We are part of the way along this route with the church s website at and our presence on Facebook. Our session clerk s minutes, bible reading rotas and other information. We publicise all our weekly activities and the monthly church Newsletter on the website. The majority of churches attending the meeting now provide the option for its members to receive their monthly magazine by . This both reduces paper and distribution costs. Of course, not all church members are on and they would continue to receive their paper copies. At a recent Congregational Board meeting it was agreed that we should offer to send out the church Newsletter by . Would you like to receive your Monthly Newsletter by ? If so, please speak to me any Sunday morning or me at akmcinnes@ntlworld.com. This year the Stamp Appeal will support the The Giffen Institute of Theology (GIT) in South Sudan. The Giffen Institute of Theology (GIT) of the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan (PCOSS) needs books. Having recently relocated to Kakuma, a refugee camp in Kenya, GIT is looking to stock up its library for students. This year s stamp appeal will help do just that. GIT was established in 1974 by the PCOSS. It plays a significant role in training people for ministry. However, South Sudan has suffered terrible violence and war in recent years, and GIT has been forced to relocate twice. Resources, including books, were lost or destroyed during this tumultuous time. The Institute not only provides valuable education for students, but supports those who have fled from war through providing training on concentration, and activities encouraging reconciliation between students from different tribes. Help us to support our partner, the PCOSS, through collecting your used stamps which are sold to make money for much needed resources. ******** This is a thank you from World Mission Stamp Appeal and The Guild to everyone who takes time to bring their used stamps to church. This year we have collected over 1.35kg (3 pounds) a LOT OF STAMPS! Last year 4,334 was the amount raised. Alistair McInnes 9

Working with an Urban Trinity of Churches, Local Authorities and Police, Street Pastors go out in all weathers, typically from 10pm to 3am on one or more nights at the weekend. In order to increase the value of Street Pastors to the communities in Scotland, we now want to work, with Guild members across the country to inform, dispel myths and raise awareness of Street Pastors. We will explore the best vehicle to deliver thee messages to every part of the Guild family. The partnership with The Guild will allow us the option to deliver the extensive training programme in more inventive ways, including distance learning of a few of the modules.
