ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Charitable, Christian Planning Reflects our Faith. The opportunity to include charitable giving in the estate planning of U.S. citizens is largely overlooked by the vast majority of people in our nation. We hope that more people will continue to do in their death what they have done during their entire lives; namely share love with family members and support the work of the Lord. But, if a person waits until they are no longer able to make their own decisions or until they die, charitable planning is not likely to happen. Contrary to popular myth, a person can witness their faith and support ministries without disinheriting their family. To learn more about charitable giving, contact Ray Pagels, our Christian Gift Planning Counselor at , Ext. 200 or ray.pagels@lfnd.org. HOW ARE YOU? We often ask the question when we should really just say, Hello. We almost always answer the question with Good... or Fine; how about you? Sometimes our answer is not truthful, it is simply our thoughtless automatic or socially acceptable response. What about those times when we are not so fine or good? St. Peter and eight other congregations in the area are able to offer competent, compassionate, confidential, comprehensive clinical Christian counseling through St. Peter Christian Psychological Counseling and Dr. Dean Pittelko. Fees are very reasonable and discounts are given to members of St. Peter. Contact Dr. Dean at or dr.deancounseling@gmail.com or check out their website at

9 Even Young Adults Need an Estate Plan! By Rev. Mark Bussert, Director of Stewardship At what age should a person have an estate plan? 18! Most young adults see little reason to have an estate plan, because they have little or no physical property of value, and also because they think an estate plan is merely a preparation for dying which is the furthest thing from their minds at that point in their lives. But there s more to an estate plan than just a will or the disposition of property. At 18, a person classified as an adult by law, with rights to privacy and to make legal decisions (parents who have tried to find out things about their college child s health or financial dealings have discovered this!). This period is also a dangerous time in a young person s life, inasmuch as they are trying out new experiences, some of which are not, shall we say, totally beneficial to their health or safety. So even if they have little property, it s time to identify someone (such as a parent) to be their health-care proxy, and to provide them a release form HIPAA, in case of the need to make medical decisions on their behalf. As time goes on, and the young person enters the job market, a retirement savings plan should be set up (including a beneficiary designation, in case of death or disability).the next step for many is marriage, and it becomes time to change health-care designations, and also time to write a will. This becomes especially important as a person begins to develop a tangible amount of real property, and as children come along who should be protected by guardianship provisions. Many people think estate planning is for older people WRONG! Young adulthood is the time to begin! StewardTips StewardTips is a new weekly column to help you be a better manager of everything God gives you time, money, your body, the world around you, and more! Got a good idea to share? it to Pastor Bussert at mark.bussert@aol.com. This week s StewardTip: need a snack? Instead of cookies or chips, keep some fresh fruit or veggies around the house. For extra flavor, add some cheese or peanut butter, or dip them in yogurt. Your body is a gift from God take care of it! Be a good steward! 9
