1 The Parish Paper Summer Edition Shine God s Light As disciples of Christ, we rejoice in and share the warmth of God s love and light by teaching the holy word, serving Christ s community, and growing together in faith. Sunday Worship Service: :am Fellowship: :am Sunday School: No Sunday School during the summer months Child care available during Worship Service From the Pastor Dear Church Family, It has been my great privilege and honor to serve you as Transitional Pastor this past year. As I shared with the congregation that gathered on Sunday, July, I was hired by the Session to lead the church in this transition and serve in all the capacities that come with leading a congregation. Two important tasks during this transition dealt with the financial crisis and preparing you all for the new pastor search process. I am able to report that our budget is nearly balanced and we are operating in the black, meaning our total expenses are lower than our total income as of May,. Last week, we elected the PNC Pastor Nominating Committee that will be working on nominating a candidate to be elected by the congregation as your new pastor. This is not to say there isn't still a lot of work to be done to stay a healthy congregation, but this is to say that my conflict work with you has come to an end and I will be transitioning from here by the summer's end. The Session has approved a search committee consisting of members of Personnel and of the search committee that interviewed me. They are Mindy D'Amico, Steve Lederach, and David Shearer. We will be working hard to find the right transitional candidate to serve the church while the PNC is working hard alongside your prayers. Friends, do not be dismayed, be encouraged. You are the church and they will know that you are disciples of Jesus Christ by your love for one another. This encouragement from Jesus, himself, will be your guide in the weeks and months ahead. We will continue to send parish papers with updated information and please do not hesitate to contact me at anytime through the summer. Please know that I keep each of you in my prayers. Blessings, Pastor Wonjae

3 Van Doren Award Recipients The Van Doren Award, established in, commemorates the memory Mr. and Mrs. Bergen Van Doren s three sons who passed away within a year of each other. Recipients are Sr. High graduates seeking higher education. Criteria for this award are set forth in the two great commandments to love God and our neighbor. Christian Education committee confirms finalists based on service to church, home and community. The Christian Education Committee presents Jenna Evans and Elizabeth Lentine Jenna has been coming to Flemington Presbyterian Church since she was born. She has always been active here, starting with Sunday School even though she was often the only girl in class in her younger years and culminating with her interest in the topical discussions of Breakfast Club. She has participated in many youth activities, such as Youth Sunday, the Christmas pageant, the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, Thanksgiving dinner preparation, and the -Hour Famine. She has served as a student deacon, helping with the chicken dinner, the clothing drive, audio ministry, communion and ushering, among other things. Jenna cherishes her time as a Vacation Bible School volunteer and has participated in music ministry by occasionally playing piano during worship services. She is planning her fourth, week-long Volunteers in Mission VIM trip this summer to continue her contribution to housing rehabilitation in an impoverished area of rural Maine, one of her most significant and formative experiences through church. Jenna has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, having earned her Bronze and Silver Awards. She has been involved in countless Girl Scout leadership and community service activities over the years for younger Girl Scouts, at school, in care centers, and at many other venues around our community. Her friends appreciate this for the opportunity to buy cookies. She also works at her dance studio to help teach younger students tap dance. At Hunterdon Central High School, Jenna is a peer mentor and educator through the Teen Prevention Education Program; provides one-to-one tutoring for other students through the National Honor Society; and is co-president of the Students Helping Honduras club, which works to provide educational access to youth in one of the poorest nations in the western hemisphere. Jenna has always had an empathetic nature and has known for many years that she would like to work in a profession where she has a direct hand in helping others. Jenna is looking forward to attending Northeastern University in Boston, MA, this fall, having been accepted to their -year Doctor of Physical Therapy program. As a lifelong member of Flemington Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth Lillie Lentine has been Blessed to participate in the numerous opportunities for Faith & Service that FPC offers. Her church family has given her much, and she has given much in return, to the Church and to the communities it serves. She has partaken in those experiences and benefits, and then turned around and shared the love she received with all those around her. From Sunday mornings as a baby in the FPC Nursery, through her Sunday School & Confirmation years, Elizabeth learned that God loves her and wants her to share His love with others. So as she has grown, she has chosen to give that love to her

4 family, to the Sunday School and Vacation Bible School children she has taught, and--on the yearly Volunteers-in-Mission trip-- to families in rural Maine. Elizabeth has been a Nursery caregiver and Sunday School helper; a VBS participant, assistant and leader; a Youth Deacon; a three-time VIM-er; and an active participant in FPC s Jr. & Sr. High Youth Group activities. She has also given her time and care to Service projects such as Feed the Need, the annual Church Yard Sale, -Hour Famine, Youth Sunday, and the Christmas Pageant. Inspired by her experiences at FPC, Elizabeth extended her Christian reach to service projects in the local schools and larger community. She was active in Girls on the Run as both a participant and Student Coach sharing her time to help elementary age girls build self-esteem and be active. Elizabeth tutored ELL students at Robert Hunter ES, and has further shared her love of learning by tutoring peers through her Math, Science, Spanish & National Honor Society memberships. She has also enjoyed years in Teen PEP Prevention Education Program as a peer educator, & as a result of relationships formed there and connections she made as President of the Spanish Honor Society, she co-founded an ELL girls group to better meet the social and educational needs of her school community. Elizabeth has chosen to lead a life full of loving service. While doing this, she has maintained a rigorous academic schedule, attained excellent grades, and found time to work as a babysitter and in a local retail store as well. She has shown herself to be the creative, hard-working, and compassionate person she was called to be. As she heads off to Cornell in the Fall to begin her study of Engineering, new circles of people small and wide around her will feel her warmth and be graced by her numerous, generously-given gifts. On behalf of the Christian Education Committee & our entire congregation, we offer our heartfelt thanks to this year s Sunday School Teachers. Our Sunday School ministry would not be possible without the dedication and many gifts of these individuals. We are truly blessed by their presence. We have served the elderly, single parent families, and low-income families through Mission at the Eastward's housing rehabilitation program. Our volunteers spend one full week in Maine hammering, sawing, painting, and sweating to build ramps, roofs, and sheds. They insulate, replace siding, windows and doors, close in porches, add railings, paint houses, and build steps, decks, and bathrooms. They also run a vacation Bible school for youngsters of the area, a week which those children look forward to every year and remember forever. Please keep our VIM team, Mission at the Eastward, and the people they serve in your prayers. SHINE GOD'S LIGHT! As disciples of Christ, we share and rejoice in the warmth of God's love and light by teaching the holy word, serving Christ's community, and growing together in faith. The FPC Mission Statement informs us, unites us, and guides our faith. It is intended to speak to each member of the church in a personal way and bring us together with one common purpose. A true treasure of our church sanctuary is the stained glass window inspired by William Hunt s painting The Light of the World. In it, a lantern-carrying Jesus is poised to knock on a door overgrown with foliage. The door has no handle and therefore cannot be opened from the outside, but rather must be opened from within. As Presbyterians, we believe God is always reaching out to us in a myriad of ways so it might be possible for us to hear and understand God s intention for us. It is only by opening the door and embracing God s light that our hearts may be exposed to the transforming power of God s love. With open hearts, we can do this in times of joy, in times of sadness any time at all. We also actively share and rejoice in God s love and light through the activities of learning and teaching. Learning is intrinsic to teaching. We are taught as children, we are taught as adults, we teach our children, and we teach each other. We learn when we are taught, and importantly, we learn through teaching others. This lifelong learning is vital to FPC. Teaching the holy word, or Scripture, is not confined to Sunday services, nor is it reserved for just the clergy. Presbyterian tradition makes it clear that ministry teaching is the work of the whole church and priesthood is an offce of every member of the church. Each of us is uniquely gifted by God, and it is through the sharing of our gifts and the light of the Holy Spirit that we serve in Christ s name. Through Christ s example, serving Christ s community is inclusive of our FPC brothers and sisters, nearby communities, the entire world, and all people. As a community of faith, we support each other and strengthen our bond with Christ. Together, we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ" Peter :.
