10 From Pastor Ralph s Desk: A Challenge to His Honor (Part III) Malachi 1:6-14 Intro: Today we will examine the third and final aspect concerning the challenge to God s Honor. The first aspect or point we looked at was God s own affirmation to His Honor. He first affirms that His name should be honored. He leaves no doubt whatsoever that God s people should honor Him. Second, He affirms the reason why His name should be honored. Those reasons are clearly seen in the text. They are because of who He is first. Then second, because of the relationship He has mad possible for us to have with Him and that relationship is the privilege to call Him Father. The final reason why is because one day all are going to bow down to Him so we should start now not later. The second point we took a look at was Israel s objection to His Honor. The first part of this point was the problem with their objection, and the problem was that they didn t even realize that they had objected. They were so cold and callous in their worship that they couldn't see their objection to His honor. The second part to this point was the people who made the objection. It started with the priest, the religious leaders and trickled down to the rest of the nation. The main thought from this part was that no one, regardless of the position you hold in life, are not exempt from honoring God s Holy name. Today s final point is the Lord s illustration of Israel s dishonor, or their failure to honor His name. III. As we examine the challenge to His honor, we will notice God s illustration of Israel s dishonor. A. First, we will notice that He illustrates their dishonor by revealing Israel s sacrifices that brought dishonor. The Lord states over and over in these set of verses that the primary way in which they dishonored His name was by offering unacceptable sacrifices to Him. He describes these sacrifices as being the worse part of the flock or herd instead of the best. The animals they brought had blemishes and bruises. They were diseased, crippled and blind. In other words, Israel was saying that the Lord God Almighty was not worthy of the best part of the flock. However, He indicates that they thought better of their human leaders than Him because He knew there was no way they would give these kind of gifts to their earthly leaders. Also, by offering up these kind of sacrifices they were showing that they dishonored God by disobeying His Word. For God, in His Word, had given them strict commands in His Word on the kind of animals they were to offer up to Him and they were to be the most absolute purest, most perfect of the flock or herd. They were to be without spot or blemish, Leviticus 22: So, when we dishonor His Word, we dishonor Him.

11 The other way that these kind of sacrifices were dishonoring to God was that it showed that they not only were not taking God serious but they weren t taking their own condition serious either. For much of the purposes of the sacrifice was to acknowledge their frail, human and sinful conditions that required a very pure sacrifice to cleanse them from their sinful condition. So, today, we are much like Israel sadly because we too dishonor the Lord s name by offering insufficient sacrifices to the Lord and by dishonoring His Word and finally by failing to recognize our frail, weak and sinful condition before Him. B. Second, we will notice that He illustrates Israel s dishonor by revealing His strength in stating the dishonor. In other words, notice how strong that the Lord states their dishonor. He does it in such a way that you can hear His disgust and anger with them. Just read verse 9-14 and it says it all. You can feel His emotions. However, we also sense the strength in which He declares their dishonor by the clear warnings that He gives them concerning the consequences that they will face for their dishonor. So, today we need to hear God s disgust again as well as His warnings. Don t you know that when we use His name in such dishonor as we do that He is hurt, and disgusted at the same time. The next time you use His name, be sure it is to honor Him. C. Finally, we will notice that He illustrates Israel s dishonor by revealing the symbolism they overlook in their dishonor. Now, I believe this is the greatest and most important aspect of the message. This to me is the reason why god is so displeased with Israel over the whole thing. You see someone might say well what is the big deal over what conditions the sacrifice is any way because they are going to be consumed in the flames? Well, that is where the symbolism kicks in. You see the sacrifices they offered had to be a pure and perfect as possible because of what they represented. And what they represented was the ultimate Lamb that would be slain for our sins and that Lamb in order to be the sacrifice for our sins had to be perfect or He could not have been our sacrifice because he too would require a Savior as well. Therefore, the sacrifices of Israel were to be as perfect as possible because they symbolized the perfect Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, whom Peter tell us in I Peter1:18-21, that Jesus was the Lamb without spot; blemish or defect. Also, Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:21, God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. So dear friends, if you want to dishonor God, then dishonor Jesus. If you want to honor God, then honor the name above every name, the name of Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, Amen.
