4 From Pastor Ralph s Desk: The Story of Creation Intro: for two weeks prior to this past Sunday, we examined ways to reconnect with our creation and our creator. By the way the two go hand in hand together. There were two ways we focused upon. The first way was simple yet necessary to acknowledge and declare exactly what the Word of God teaches about creation and our awesome creator, which by the way, is clearly one thing and one thing only, that God in the beginning created all things without the process of evolution and did it in six 24 hour days. God gave us the Word of God and He gave us creation. Therefore, the two will not contradict one another. What you find in the Word of God about creation, you will also find in the evidence of creation. The second way we examined to reconnect to creation and our creator is to challenge and reject the unbiblical view of long periods of separation during our creation. Tragically the church and Christian schools in the past century decided that they must find a way to combine the teachings of much of the scientific community on evolution with the teachings of the Word of God. They came up with some compromises that they believed could reconcile the
5 Two together. However, what they did was instead to totally compromise God s Word and deny the true evidence found in creation itself. What the teachings of long periods of separation do is simply give credence to the theory of evolution which is nothing more than an instrument of the devil. It also makes God our creator someone who is so far removed form us. Now there are five reasons, at least, the Scriptures gives us to reject the long periods of separation. I don t want to spend too much time on them because I have already expounded on them. The first reasonwas because in Genesis 1, each day was connected by the conjunction and. The second reason is because each creation day had an evening and a morning. The third reason is because God told Moses to model each week exactly after the pattern of creation week, Exodus 20:8-11. The fourth reason is because when Jesus was asked about the subject of divorce, He referred His answer back to the beginning when He said God made them male and female. Not millions of years later but rather made male and female in the beginning. The fifth reason because you can t have the cart before the horse. If you accept the long periods of separation to allow for the process of evolution in our creation, then you have accepted death before sin and that can t be because Genesis chapters two and three as well as Romans chapter five teaches us that there was no death until after Adam and Eve sinned against God. So, absolutely nothing could have died before during all of those so-called millions of years of evolution. Now this past Sunday, I began examining the reasons why we need to reconnect with our creation and our creator. I m doing it by looking at what I and simply calling the Story of Creation found in Colossians chapter one, verses fifteen through twenty. Today, we will simply examine the point of the message.
6 I. First, The Story of Creation is a story of sovereignty, vs15. As Paul begins to tell in the story of creation he begins by telling us just who our creator is. In the preceding verses leading up to these set of verses, Paul is teaching us that God has redeemed through the blood of His precious Son. When Paul begins this verse and this set of verses with the pronoun He we know he is referring to Christ Jesus our Lord because that s been his focus in the verses leading up to these verses. When he says, He is the image of the invisible God he means that it is Jesus who is the image of the invisible God. Paul wants you to know that as he reveals about the sory of creation that it begins with the creator and the creator is Jesus Christ our Lord who happens to be the image of the invisible God. As a matter of fact, the writer of Hebrews whom I believe also to be Paul, gives us this same description of Christ but with one more detail. It says, The Son is the radiance of God s glory and the exact representation of His being (Hebrews 1:3). The details I am referring to is the word exact. So Colossians and Hebrews is saying that the creator of all is not just a nice resemblance of God but rather it is the exact image and representation of God and the reason why is because He is God. Jesus said the, he that has seen me has seen the Father. (John 14:9) Now Paul wants us to understand that the one who carried out our creation was capable to do so because He is the sovereign God of all time. He alone had and has the power and wisdom and capability necessary to take nothing and turn it into a universe that is so filled with design, pattern, engineer, organization, precision and complexity.
7 Also, because He is the exact representation making Him sovereign, we know that He not only can create it but sustain it and make sure that it will ultimately accomplish God s will for it. This also reminds us of another important truth and that is that because He is sovereign He can recreate what sin has so damaged in our lives. For God created us in the beginning in His image, but sin distorted this image that the only way it can be restored is for our sovereign Christ to restore it. When we surrender our lives to Him through repentance and faith, II Corinthians 5:7 tells us that He makes us a new creation. For He who is the exact representation of God not lives with us. Oh, blessed be our sovereign Lord who created us and recreated us because of who He is, the exact representation of God. So, let us exalt our sovereign creator, the Sovereign Creator.
