As some of you may know My son is also a member in Colorado at the Fort Collins Lodge. Sick and Distressed Brothers Brother Robert Douglas Haines has been awarded the Mason of The Year Award for the ensuing year. Congratulations Brothers, It is March and time to think about the year to come. We need all the help we can get to keep our lodge going for the years to come. On the 23 of March My son and I received the Lewis Award it is for the linage in masonry ( Father and sons in the craft ). Pictures on page 3. Words from the West Greetings Brothers, What a Great team effort for making Pasties this last month. Thanks to All of the Masons and Eastern Stars for their help. Now Brothers it is time for us to stand up and get some new blood into the lodge. This is one of the ways to insure that our lodge will remain viable in the future for years to come. And part upon the Square Don Gondzar, Worshipful Master Another thanks to Brothers Doug Haines and Mike O Neill for taking over the Pasty Bake. Lets all be willing to help and support them. Keep buying and selling. It supports our Fraternities, Causes and keeps the lights on too. Congratulations to W.M. Don Gondzar and his son Scott Gondzar on their Lewis Award. 2 From the South Brothers, Welcome to spring somewhere but as of today sure looks more of the same old winter. We had a great meal the last meeting of corn beef and cabbage. Didn't effect us during the meeting. We will have bean soup with grilled ham and cheese sandwich next month. We are trying to put together a spouse appreciation meal together for early in the summer. More to come later. Snow Birds should be arriving soon and it will be great to see them back. We have missed you and hope you had a good winter. If you have not paid your dues yet please do so as soon as possible. Hope the next meeting we see a bunch of you with your tan. God Bless. By the Plum Brother Doug Haines Junior Warden Temple Board For the next few months we will be holding our board meeting following the regular meeting. All Master Masons are invited. Attend if you d like to make suggestions and to here where we are going in the future. Michael O Neill P.M., President Irish Soda Bread 3 C. All purpose flour 2/3 C. Sugar 3 tsp. Baking powder 1 tsp Salt 1tsp Baking soda 1 C. raisins 2 Eggs, beaten 1 1/2 C. buttermilk 1 Tbsp. Canola Oil In a large bowl, combine the first five ingredients. Stir in raisins. Set aside 1 Tbsp beaten egg. In a bowl, combine the buttermilk, oil and remaining eggs, stir into flour mixture just until moistened (dough will be sticky) Transfer to a greased 9 in. round baking dish, brush top with reserved egg. Bake at 350 degrees for minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack to cool. Cut into wedges. Yield 1 loaf (12 wedges).

4 If they Ask, Tell Them! How often do we as Masons hear the word from the general public, SECRET? Did you know that we are a Secret Society? When I hear that I say to them shhhhhhhhhhhhh! No one knows about us! How did you find out? Then I hear the usual, we are a Religion, we take secret oaths, and that we are sacrilegious because we call the head of the Lodge Worshipful. They strongly question our Secrets. So when they ask, I tell them! That s right, I tell them about our most hidden secrets. I begin like this, asking them first! Do you know that we as Masons have the number one Child Identification Program in the world and we travel all over doing it for free? I then go into great detail explaining each and every step of the program pointing out that it is for every child alive, not just a Masonic Family. Do you know that we have Brothers and family members each and every day in our Schools helping with those less fortunate children with learning disabilities? Do you know that we are a non-profit organization and all of our available monies go directly back into the communities? Do you know that we as Masons strongly support our area food banks? Do you know that we pay for and educate Teachers in our Schools to attend a weekend school to recognize troubled students and stop the behavior of bullying? Do you know that we as Masons have in our Fraternity that is world wide known as the Shriner s Hospitals where again children are taken care of for free? Do you know that we have pancake breakfasts and different dinners to help raise money for our Firefighters, Police Officers and emergency personnel so they have proper equipment to keep them safe? Do you know that we provide Scholarships, back packs for children, school supplies, clothes etc for the Children and adults of our communities? (The list and questions could go on for hours) Do you know that you are right, that we are a Religion? A huge one because we insist on each and every man coming into our Fraternity believe in his own faith and that No Atheist can be made a Mason! Do you actually know the definition of Worship? Look it up in the dictionary, its definition is DUE RESPECT. Did you know these things about us? Then comes the part I absolutely love, is their response. NO! So I say Well there you have it, some of the most best kept Secrets in Masonry. They ask why no one seems to know about these things and why we don t tell anyone? I simply reply as we all do, Because we don t brag about helping others, we simply do it because it needs being done. It always seems funny when I get to that point and their disposition changes all for the better. They seem to be at ease to find out that we are not the bunch that they heard about, and are actually suddenly thrilled to be in our company. I personally feel that it s about time more and more people knew just what these best kept secrets are. After all, public relations means great things to say, great things to share, and even greater things to come. I for one, would be grasping at the chance to knock on the door of a Masonic Lodge if I knew that I could be a part of that. So I say, If they ask, Tell them! Guy R. Hissong

5 Dear Sisters and Brothers, S H E R M A N C H A P T E R # 1 9 7, O R D E R O F T H E E A S TERN STARS I think Spring is just around the corner. I'm starting to see bare spots out in the fields and yards. So maybe it won't be long before we start seeing green grass again real soon--i HOPE and then the heat can be turned down in the house. Well I guess we're back to the grind again. We have been in the dark for 2 months. The month of March we started having our regular meetings since December, we had a lot of stuff to cover. Then to top it off we had to have our yearly School of Instruction. Our Instructor came from Sault St. Marie. She was very nice. She explained the changes from Grand Chapter. We done our School. and our regular meeting and she talked some more and brought us greetings from the Grand Worthy Matron and Grand Worthy Patron. It was a long night, especially for the Worthy Matron who had lost her voice and with a very soft voice she did make it thru the meeting. Thank Goodness for that. We gave Paul and Jean Roggow an Honorary Membership to Sherman Chapter. I also presented Charlie Raymond with is Proficiency Card because he wasn't at the last meeting when we passed them out. Now all 23 of my officers have them. We also had many Birthday's and Anniversary's to celebrate and we sang Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary to them ALL. We had to celebrate the ones from January, February and March. We gave all the Birthday people Stained Glass Patch Work Hearts and all the Anniversary people received a Stained Glass Red Rose. Our Worthy Patron talked about a project that we are going to help support from the Clam Lake Masonic Lodge in Cadillac. It's called Healing Private Wounds. We also had our Easter Vesper Service. With reading of Bible Verses and singing a special song named WERE YOU THERE WHEN THEY CRUCIFIED MY LORD, and a prayer from the Chaplain. The Worthy Patron and myself had the Grand Associate Conductress brought to the East. At that time we presented her with a Thank You Card from the Chapter. The Worthy Patron and my self presented her with a Thank You card and a Stained Glass Red Rose that we made. The Worthy Patron had her husband who drives her from school to school, brought to the East. W.P gave him a Small Stained Glass Humming Bird, and Thanked him for bringing Lori all the way down to Mesick safely. He loved the Humming Bird he said that he was going to hang it from the mirror in the car. Before the night was over we presented Lori with a Stained Glass Patch Work Heart for her Birthday. She also Love that also. We have some members under the weather. Please keep Geraldine Sandell in your Prayers. She is not feeling good. Willa Raymond who has a cold and cough, and Linda Johnson who is having some pain in her hip. So PLEASE keep all of the above in you thoughts and Prayers. After the meeting we all said the Lord's Prayer and went out to the Dining Room for some very nicely decorated tables for Easter and St Patrick's Day and enjoyed the delicious refreshments that was brought in for the luncheon. We hope that you all had a Great St. Patrick's Day and a Very Happy Easter. It's not too often that both holidays are in March. Hopefully April will be a much nicer and warmer month that what we have been having in March. I hope that we don't see very much more of that white stuff. I'm kind of getting real tired of that stuff. Our next regular meeting will be April 10, 2013, at 7:00 P.M. On April 19 & 20th, we will be making and baking our monthly Pasty's. We usually get started by 9:00 A.M., both days. Please come out and join us. It's not just a WORK BEE. We have a good time also. HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE---Keep Smiling because it is contagious and keep safe on the nasty roads. We'll be back again next month. In 1831, the Anti-Masonic Party nominated William Wirt as their candidate for the presidency at their first national convention which was held in Baltimore, Maryland. Wirt was not only a Freemason, but even defended the Order in a speech before the convention that nominated him.
