First Presbyterian Church of Naples In the Heart of Naples with the Love of God THE SIX GREAT ENDS October 29, 2017 Reformation Sunday LITURGY BULLETIN

The Prelude What a Friend We Have in Jesus ARR. HECTOR OLIVERA THE TIME OF GATHERING Welcome and Announcements REV. CRAIG GOODRICH Kirkin O the Tartans Procession * Call to Worship Leader: Praise the Lord! Praise God in the sanctuary! People: Praise God for God s mighty deeds! Leader: Praise God with strings and pipe drum! People: Let everything that breathes praise the Lord! All: Let us worship God! A TIME FOR PRAISE AND CONFESSION * Hymn of Praise #43 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God EIN FESTE BURG 1. A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our helper he, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; his craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. 2. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, were not the right man on our side, the man of God s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he; Lord Sabaoth his name, from age to age the same, and he must win the battle. 3. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure; one little word shall fell him. 4. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; the Spirit and the gifts are ours thro him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; the body they may kill; God s truth abideth still; his kingdom is forever. Call to Confession Friends, in Jesus Christ we have been redeemed and set free to live abundantly before God. In Jesus Christ we have received grace upon grace. Therefore, trusting in God s mercy and love, let us freely confess our sin together, praying our prayer of confession. JIM WADDELL

Prayer of Confession God of grace and God of mercy, we confess that we have not turned away from sin. You have entrusted us with the good news of the gospel and yet we have failed to take it to heart and have neglected to share your word. You call us to ministries of compassion, of giving and service, but we focus on our own comfort and rest. You call us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, but we seek peace on our own terms and we give in to anxiety and fear. You call us to worship you, but we create our own idols and worship our own plans. Forgive us and reform us, God of grace. Strengthen us in faith that we may stand only in your grace and so that all we do is done to your glory and in your power through Jesus Christ our Lord. A Moment for Silent Personal Confession Congregational response: Jesus, Name Above All Names All: Jesus, name above all names, beautiful Savior, glorious Lord. Emmanuel, God is with us, blessed Redeemer, Living Word. Declaration of Pardon Leader: Hear the good news! In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Receive God s forgiveness and be at peace. People: Thanks be to God. * Gloria Patri #805 GREATOREX Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen! Amen! Children s Time REV. CRAIG GOODRICH Reception of New Members Presentation of New Members Carl Brandt, Geraldine Brandt, Robert Cook, Martha Fusco, David Lovingood, Gary Lubben, Vicki Lubben, Robert Mac Minn, Pat Mac Minn Questions of Members Question of the Congregation Elder: Do you as members of the church of Jesus Christ promise to guide and nurture these members by word and deed with love and prayer, encouraging them to know and follow Christ and to be faithful members of Christ s church? Congregation: We do. Welcome All: With joy and thanksgiving we welcome you to share with us in the ministry of Christ, for we are all one in Christ. Prayer LIBBY BIEHL, CLERK OF SESSION

THE WORD First Reading Psalm 150 PEW BIBLE PAGE 508 Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty firmament! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his surpassing greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with clanging cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that breathes praise the LORD! Praise the LORD! Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Response Highland Cathedral TRADITIONAL Don Goller, pipes Second Reading Colossians 3:12-17 PEW BIBLE PAGES 958 As God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Sermon Why Church? To Worship Always REV. CRAIG GOODRICH * Affirmation of Faith (from a Brief Statement of Faith) Our faith and its assurance do not proceed from flesh and blood, that is to say, from natural powers within us, but are the inspiration of the Holy Ghost; whom we confess to be God, equal with the Father and with his Son, who sacrifices us, and brings us into all truth by his own working, without whom we should remain forever enemies to God and ignorant of his Son, Christ Jesus. For by nature we are so dead, blind, and perverse, that neither can we feel when we are picked, see the light when it shines, nor assent to the will of God when it is revealed, unless the Spirit of the Lord Jesus quicken that which is dead, remove the darkness from our minds, and bow our stubborn hearts to the obedience of his blessed will. And so, as we confess that God the Father created us when we were not, as his Son our Lord Jesus redeemed us when we were enemies to him, so also do we confess that the Holy Ghost does sanctify and regenerate us, without respect to any merit proceeding from us, be it before or be it after our regeneration. To put this even more plainly; as we willingly disclaim any honor and glory for our own creation and redemption, so do we willingly also for our regeneration and sanctification; for by ourselves we are not capable of thinking one good thought, but he who has begun the work in us alone continues us in it, to the praise and glory of his undeserved grace.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD Prayers of Thanksgiving and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Presentation of Tithes and Offerings (Please pass the friendship pad down the pews and back). In Jesus Christ we have received grace and peace and by the Holy Spirit we are reformed. So now with thanksgiving we respond with open hands and hearts. We will now receive the morning offering. The Offertory We Will Glorify TWILA PARIS ARR. JACK SCHRADER * The Doxology All: Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Prayer of Dedication Gracious God, with these tithes and offerings we give ourselves. Use what we give and use our lives together in your good work in this world which you love. We pray in Jesus name. Amen. GOING FORTH * Hymn of Commitment #78(vs. 1,3,5,6) O God, Our Help in Ages Past ST. ANNE 1. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home! 3. Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame, from everlasting thou art God, to endless years the same. 5. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, bears all its years away, they fly, forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day. 6. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home! * Presentation of Clan Tartan Banners for Blessing * Prayer As long ago you bro'ugh peace to our warring clans, O God, we ask you to bring peace to our world today. As we remember the Scot's heritage of many of us, may we be mindful of the heritage of hope you give to all of us. Bless these clan tartans as symbols of integrity and tradition. Bless them as reminders that your love blesses all the families of the earth. Grant us wisdom and strength to find peace in this world. May your Gospel live in our lives and in our nation. We pray these things in the name of Jesus, the giver of grace. Amen.

Prayer List Joanne Applegate Suzanne Chickering Barbara Church David Curry Ken Gittings Tommi Hosterman Lorraine Kornek Sheri Luster Bob Nochta Christopher Nordbrock NEWS & EVENTS Bet Wyker The U.S. Military Stephen Ministers and care receivers Kirkin o the Tartan Ceremony This ceremony reminds us of the Scottish heritage of the Presbyterian Church and its roots in Reformed Theology. A tartan is the distinctive woven fabric that a clan or family grouping uses to identify itself to others. The traditions of the Kirkin began in this country during World War II-before the United States joined the Allied Powers. At the time, Dr. Peter Marshall, a Presbyterian pastor and Chaplain of the United States Senate, wanted to encourage American identification with the British motherland and determined that he would target those Americans of Scottish descent.
