2 The Prelude St. Anthony Chorale Franz Joseph Haydn Festival Ringers arr. Kevin McChesney THE TIME OF GATHERING Welcome and Life Together Rev. Craig Goodrich SERVICE OF PREPARATION *Call to Worship Leader: Trust in the LORD, take delight in the LORD, commit your way to the LORD; trust in God, and God will act. People: God will make your vindication shine like the light, and the justice of your cause like the noonday. Leader: Be still before the LORD, and wait patiently; do not fret over those who prosper by carrying out their schemes. People: The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; The LORD helps them and rescues them; God is their refuge in the time of trouble. All: Let us worship God! A TIME FOR PRAISE AND CONFESSION *Hymn of Praise #700 We Are God s People Symphony 1. We are God s people, the chosen of the Lord, born of his Spirit, established by his Word; our cornerstone is Christ alone, and strong in him we stand: O let us live transparently, and walk heart to heart and hand in hand. 2. We are God s loved ones, the Bride of Christ our Lord, for we have known it, the love of God out-poured; now let us learn how to return the gift of love once given: O let us share each joy and care, and live with a zeal that pleases Heaven. 3. We are the Body of which the Lord is Head, called to obey him, now risen from the dead; he wills us be a family, diverse yet truly one: O let us give our gifts to God, and so shall his work on earth be done. 4. We are a temple, the Spirit s dwelling place, formed in great weakness, a cup to hold God s grace; we die alone, for on its own each ember loses fire: yet joined in one the flame burns on to give warmth and light, and to inspire Call to Confession 8:30 a.m. Ann Goodnight 10:15 a.m. Annabel Doane If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But when we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. So, trusting in God s grace, let us say together our Prayer of Confession. Prayer of Confession Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our failure to be what you created us to be. We have lived for ourselves and apart from you. You call us to work for a world where all will be fed and have dignity, but we find ourselves distracted by our own desires. You call us to seek justice and peace, but we are satisfied with injustice and discord. You call us to bring liberty to the oppressed, but we do not insist on freedom for all. Forgive us, O Lord. Turn us to your will by the power of your Spirit, so that all may know your justice and peace; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior.

3 A Moment for Silent Personal Confession Congregational Response All: I love you, Lord, and I lift my voice to worship you, O my soul, rejoice! Take joy, my King, in what you hear: May it be a sweet, sweet sound in your ear. I Love You, Lord Declaration of Pardon Leader: Hear the good news! Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. All: Thanks be to God! *Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen! Amen! Children s Time (10:15 a.m.) Rev. Rex Childs THE WORD Prayer for Illumination Living God, source of all light, by your Word you give light to the soul. Pour out upon us the spirit of wisdom and understanding that, being taught by you in Holy Scripture, our hearts and minds may be open to know the things that pertain to life and holiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen! First Reading Genesis 45:3-11, 15 Pew Bible Page 37 Our first reading this morning comes from Genesis, chapter 45. Hear now what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph. Is my father still alive? But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence. 4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, Come closer to me. And they came closer. He said, I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. 7 God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. 9 Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. 10 You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children s children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. 11 I will provide for you there since there are five more years of famine to come so that you and your household, and all that you have, will not come to poverty. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Choral Response Help Us Accept Each Other John Ness Beck Help us accept each other as Christ accepted us; teach us as sister, brother each person to embrace. Be present, Lord, among us and bring us to believe we are ourselves accepted, and meant to love and live. Lord, for today s encounters with all who are in need, who hunger for acceptance, for righteousness and bread, we need new eyes for seeing, new hands for holding on; renew us with your Spirit, Lord, free us, make us one!

4 Second Reading Luke 6:27-38 Pew Bible Page 838 But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Sermon The Golden Rule Rev. Rex Childs *The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. RESPONSE TO THE WORD Prayers of Thanksgiving and The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Please pass the Friendship Pads so everyone in your row may sign in and so that you can see who is worshipping with you this morning. Let us pray. In the book of Acts, we are reminded that our Lord Jesus was the one who said, It is more blessed to give than to receive. We have all received much from God, so let us now show our gratitude through the giving of our tithes and our very selves. We will now receive the morning offering.

5 The Offertory Legacy of Faith Joseph M. Martin Down through the ages our journey has been long. But the Lord of heaven has given us a song, a song of life and hope, a song of peace and love, from the heart of Jesus, God s Holy One. Faith has brought us here, faith that lives forever. Faith has been our theme, a hymn we sang together. Faith in God above, guided by his love; Faith has brought us here, faith in God and one another. Faith has brought us here, faith of those before us. Faith has been our song, our never-ending chorus. Faith in God above, guided by his love; Faith has brought us here, faith in God and one another. God of ages past, Lord of each tomorrow, grant to us your peace, and comfort us in sorrow. God of hope to come, give to us a vision. Sing to us your song, reveal to us our mission. Faith has made us sure. Faith has made us strong. Faith has brought us here, and faith will lead us on. Faith has brought us here, faith that lasts forever. Faith has been our theme, a hymn we sang together. Faith has been our light. Faith has been our story. Faith has been our hope, and faith will be our glory. Faith in God above, guided by his love. Faith has been our rock. Faith has been our guide. Faith has moved our mountains. Faith has brought us here. Faith has made us strong. Faith is ours to share. Our faith in Christ will lead us on! *The Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Prayer of Dedication For the wondrous gift of life, we are thankful, O God. Your generous outpouring of grace reminds us of the fruitful life we are called to bear. May these gifts we offer embody our desire to share and contribute to your coming reign among us. Amen. GOING FORTH *Hymn of Commitment They ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love 1. We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord, we are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord, and we pray that all unity may one day be restored: Refrain: And they ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes, they ll know we are Christians by our love. 2. We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand, we will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand, and together we ll spread the news that God is in our land: Refrain. St. Brendan s 3. We will work with each other, we will work side by side, we will work with each other, we will work side by side, and we ll guard each man s dignity and save each man s pride: Refrain. 4. All praise to the Father, from whom all things come, and all praise to Christ Jesus, his only son, and all praise to the Spirit, who makes us one: Refrain. *Benediction Postlude Toccata (Cathedral Suite) Gordon Young
