We invite you to fill out and put on a name tag which can be found in the pew rack in front of you. 500 Years of Reformation Martin Luther s hammer rang out 500 years ago as he pounded his Ninety-Five Theses (his declaration of faith) to the Wittenberg, Germany church door. Luther, a monk and a priest, came to reject several teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. He strongly disputed the Catholic view on indulgences as he understood it to be, that freedom from God s punishment for sin could be purchased with money. The move unleashed a debate that shook that foundation of the Church. With the help of the still relatively new printing press, Martin Luther was able to spread his message quickly. Luther can also be considered as the inventor of the hymn, and wrote several himself. He said: Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. Ein Feste Burg (A Mighty Fortress) is the best-known hymn by Luther. We confess: By grace alone, in faith in Christ s saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works. Praise God all you people, the Holy Spirit gives us life and breath. The Holy wind of God moves us into the world to share the good news. Praise God who is making all things new! Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. They answered him, We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen Affirmation in the Presence of the Assembly You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in Holy Baptism: To live among God s faithful people, to hear his Word and share in his supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of our Lord Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Confirmands: I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. Parents/guardians come forward during next hymn. 6 In short, I will preach it, teach it, write it, but I will constrain no one by force, for faith must come freely without compulsion. Take myself as an example. I opposed indulgences and all the papists, but never with force. I simply taught, preached and wrote God s Word; otherwise I did nothing.
