4 WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN The culture of Me has saturated our society. Everywhere we look we see i this and i that. Whether it is for better or for worse, the truth is that the iculture will be around for a while. Ironically, the contemporary movement toward secularism presents a wonderful opportunity for making a clear distinction between Christianity and secularism. What s the answer to the accelerating slide toward selfishness, relativism, and secularism? The answer is holiness not just a study of holiness but the pursuit of holiness in life, in the church, and in the community. The Bible says that you shall be holy, for I am Holy (1 Peter 1:16). Holiness is deep, challenging, and demanding. Holiness convicts. It transforms character, morality, and purpose. Welcome to a week of presentations, seminars, and workshops designed to enrich and to encourage. Keynote sessions in the mornings and evenings will address the theme of holiness: Keynote Speakers Kelvin Teamer (Sunday at 6:00 PM in UCC), Pursue Holiness Bill Watkins (Monday at 7:00 PM in UCC), Capture the Vision of Holiness Ralph Gilmore (Tuesday at 7:00 PM in UCC), Abide in God s Holiness Steve Orduno (Wednesday at 7:00 PM in Gym), Stand upon Holy Ground Philip Jenkins (Monday at 10:00 AM in Tent), Desire Holiness Jon Podein (Tuesday at 10:00 AM in Tent), Commit to a Holy Standard Melvin Otey (Wednesday at 10:00 AM in Tent), Aspire to Be Holy Steve Orduno (Thursday at 10:00 AM in Tent), Holiness: Your Decision Be sure to catch the Friends of the Restoration presentations on Monday afternoon in HP130. A variety of topics will also be explored in the two-day and three-day sessions that are designed to stimulate engagement with the biblical text at a deeper level: Two-Day and Three-Day Sessions F. LaGard Smith (Mon Wed at 8:00 AM in LC), Angels, Demons, and the Devil Cliff Baird and David Hester (Mon Tues at 9:00 AM in HP135), The Afterlife Uduak Afangideh (Mon Wed at 9:00 AM in LC), Sister to Sister (Women Only) Tim Archer (Mon Wed at 11:00 AM in LC), Christ and Culture Dick Sztanyo (Mon Wed at 11:00 AM in HP128), Graceful Reason Derek McNamara (Mon Wed at 11:00 AM in HP135), Male and Female: Diverse and Equal Cory Collins (Mon Wed at 1:30 PM in HP135), Therefore, Let Us Run! 6 WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE CODIRECTOR Christians in the 21st century face a number of challenges. One of the most prominent challenges is to live like Christ, not according to worldly standards. Both the young and the old need encouragement and instruction in order to overcome the trials and temptations of life. John Donne famously wrote, No man is an island to himself. The Apostle Paul had said virtually those same words in the first century AD: For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself (Rom. 14:7 ESV). We all need edification. The theme of the 71st Faulkner Lectures, iculture: Pursuing Holiness in a Self-Saturated World, attempts to address these concerns. Whether one is a college student, trying to set the right example for fellow classmates; a husband or wife, trying to build a home on the right foundation; a businessman, striving to practice proper ethics; or a church leader, attempting to guide the congregation scripturally the lectureship has something for everyone. The message of Scripture is timeless. We at Faulkner want to emphasize the selfless example of Christ in both word and deed. We hope that your experience this week at Faulkner is one that will enrich your soul. We encourage you to attend the lectures, tour the campus, and enjoy the warm Christian fellowship. It is our pleasure to make this experience one that you will never forget! David W. Hester, PhD Lecturer for V. P. 7 HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE Billy and Kay Hilyer have dedicated their lives to the success of Christian education at Faulkner University. They were both students at Alabama Christian College, the predecessor of Faulkner University. In 1974 they returned to Montgomery to what is now the University Church of Christ where Billy served as the pulpit minister. They have remained faithful members of the congregation to this present day. Their careers soon moved to the Faulkner University campus where Billy has served more than forty-one years. Kay has worked by his side every step of the way. Billy worked with distinction as counselor, faculty member, registrar, dean of students, vice president of campus affairs, and executive vice president. In 1986 the board of trustees appointed Billy as president and chief executive officer of Faulkner University. For twenty-nine years he has successfully led the university. His honored retirement is scheduled to take place on May 31, 2015, at which time the board of trustees has selected him to serve as the university s first chancellor. Increased enrollments, law school accreditation, creation of initial graduate programs, technological advances, study abroad programs, new construction, facility renovations, and online learning list only a few of the accomplishments of the Hilyer administration. More than all of the measureable signs of progress, the mission of a Christ-centered education has been foundational to the work of the Hilyers. For their faithful service in the kingdom of God the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies is pleased to honor Faulkner University s longest serving president and first lady, Billy and Kay Hilyer. 5
