4 WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to the campus of Faulkner University for the 2019 Faulkner Lectures. Since 1942 this institution has been deeply committed to biblical teaching and faithful living. The Bible lectures are an important outgrowth of our historical Christian mission. This year s theme, Restore! Seeking God s Way, is a tremendously relevant topic for us to explore. In many ways, Faulkner University is attempting to propel a new restoration movement in young people. We want them, regardless of their chosen profession, to be engaged in restoring the world to the way God intended. It is an effort to be much more than restoring the 1st century pattern for the church. It is a challenge to restore 1st century discipleship, compassion, and holy living. I am thankful to Dr. Scott Gleaves and Dr. David Hester for assembling a tremendous lineup of dynamic presenters this year. I feel confident that we will be blessed, challenged, and inspired after participating in this outstanding event. We pray that this week will be uplifting to you. Michael D. Williams, EdD President mwilliams@faulkner.edu WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR The 2019 Faulkner Lectures address a concept that is needed in the 21st century: Restore! Seeking God s Way. The answers to all of our spiritual problems can be discovered by going back to God s word. This solution lies at the heart of restoration. Be sure to view the program for lectures, special events, and opportunities for fellowship. Restoration involves restoring what God said in the way in which he said it for the purpose for which he said it. It is incumbent upon us to articulate this plea as clearly as possible. It is our hope that the 2019 Faulkner Lectures will be a source of positive encouragement to that end. Welcome to our campus. 2 David W. Hester, PhD Director, Faulkner Lectures dhester@faulkner.edu

5 WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE CLOVERDALE CENTER FOR YOUTH AND FAMILY MINISTRY The Youth and Family Ministry Summit, hosted by the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies and the Cloverdale Center for Youth and Family Ministry at Faulkner University, is scheduled for March 4 5 in conjunction with the 2019 Faulkner Lectures. Youth ministry today is very complex and diverse due to rapid cultural changes which create major challenges for youth and family ministers. A recent study by the Barna Group (2016) cited rising skepticism of the Bible, increased loneliness, pervasive pornography, confusion regarding human sexuality, a me-first morality, and an era defined by achievement as cultural shifts have, among other things, changed the landscape of youth ministry. What is to be done? The 2019 YFM Summit will examine the present state of youth ministry and equip youth and family ministers to meet the challenge of helping young Christians embrace and articulate countercultural biblical commitments. You will be blessed by the knowledge and experience of seasoned youth leaders who, much like you, desire to have an incredible impact on the character, competence, and faith of young disciples of Christ. Steve Wages, PhD, CFLE Director, Cloverdale Center for Youth and Family Ministry swages@faulkner.edu 3 WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE WORKSHOP COORDINATOR Welcome to the 2019 Faulkner Lectures and the workshop on Restoring the Educational Program of the Local Congregation. It is a fact, almost in every case, that the young people who enter a Christian university, even those from congregations of the Lord s church, have very little Bible knowledge. It is a fact that we are losing a large majority of our children to different worldviews, agnosticism, and even atheism. It is also true that the majority of these problems stems from the home because the Bible school program of the local congregation is supposed to be the icing on the cake. While the local congregation can never and should never take the place of the home, how can the educational program of the local congregation best assist parents in their responsibilities? Can we do a better job than we have in the past? I believe that we can. Those who attend this workshop will learn practical tips and will be given tools which will help to accomplish the goal. Speakers will offer teacher training and/or curriculum which can help to instill excitement in teachers and to show them how to be more effective. Each speaker will also include ways in which his method or curriculum will help with teaching on the topic of gender issues. We pray that you will join us. Jimmy Gee, PhD Assistant Director, KGST jgee@faulkner.edu 3

6 HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE Martel Pace was born September 7, 1934, into a sharecropping family in the Hankins community near Newport, Arkansas. A crop destroying famine in 1935 drove the family to leave Arkansas and move to Flint, Michigan, where Martel s dad found work in a General Motors plant, so Martel grew up in Michigan. Always excelling in academics, he graduated from Dye High School in 1952 at the top of his class. Martel has preached the gospel since , his first year as a student at Freed-Hardeman College. While there he was elected president of the student body and Mr. FHU. Freed-Hardeman was a junior college at that time so Martel transferred to Harding. During his junior year there, he made the fortunate choice of marrying Doris Grimes of Flint, Michigan. After graduation, he preached for a year at Tupelo and two years at Prescott, both in Arkansas, and then preached for the next fifteen years in the Flint, Michigan, area, where he is still remembered with great appreciation. In 1974, he and Doris moved to Kennett, Missouri, so their children could attend a Christian school. In 1982, they moved to the Lakewood church in Montgomery, which then merged with Druid Hills to become Vaughn Park, the third largest congregation in Alabama at that time. After a time there, he accepted a position as Bible teacher half-time at Faulkner University and as preacher half-time at University church near Faulkner. He shared the University pulpit equally with Donnie Hilliard. As a minister Martel was quick to discern error and to correct it personally and graciously. After University church contracted with one full-time pulpit preacher, Martel served for several more years there as involvement minister. Doris has always played an important supporting role in Martel s ministry and has been active in her own ministry endeavors as well. She has served as Bible school teacher and as supervisor in the elementary and children s educational department. She also carries a leading role in helping to provide bridal and new birth showers as they are needed. Martel is retired now with several health issues, and Doris lovingly cares for him while continuing to serve in other ways. Commendations and congratulations for lifetimes of service to the Lord and to his church, Martel and Doris! Cecil May Jr. Dean Emeritus, V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies cmay@faulkner.edu 4 PLEASE JOIN US IN HONORING MARTEL AND DORIS PACE TUESDAY, MARCH 5, AT 5PM IN UCF $17 PER PERSON 4
