1 St. Anthony of Padua ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH 20 Cheshire Place, East Northport, New York February 26, 2017 PASTORAL STAFF Rev. Monsignor Joseph Mirro, Pastor ext. 202 Rev. Vian NtegerejImana, Associate Pastor ext. 203 Robert Braun, Deacon OUR MISSION Saint Anthony of Padua Parish is a welcoming, loving Catholic community, centered in Christ and guided by the Holy Spirit. Together we celebrate the liturgy in prayer and sacrament; we educate our children and adults in the faith; we support and reach out to those in need. We believe the Holy Spirit is calling us to continue: to love one another as Jesus loves us, to share the word of God and to serve both within and beyond our Parish family. 3 p rayer consists of attention. It is the orientation of all attention of which the soul is capable toward God. The quality of the attention counts for much in the quality of prayer. Warmth of heart cannot make up for it. The highest part of the attention only makes contact with God when prayer is intense and pure enough for such a contact to be established; but the whole attention is turned toward God. Simone Weil WHEN we pray, we are not to pray for ourselves alone. We do not say, My Father, who art in heaven or, Give me this day my daily bread ; we do not ask for own trespasses alone to be forgiven; and when we pray that we may be delivered from evil, are not praying only for ourselves either. Our prayer is for the general Good, for the common good. When we pray, we do not pray our own single selves; we pray all God s people, because they we are one. Cyprian of Carthage, Third Century THERE are as many ways to pray as there are moments in life. Sometimes we seek out a quiet spot and want to be alone, sometimes we look for a friend and want to be together. Sometimes we like a book, sometimes we prefer music. Sometimes we want to sing out with hundreds, sometimes only whisper with a few. Sometimes we want to say it with words, sometimes in deep silence. In these moments, we gradually make our lives more of a prayer oropen our hands to be led by God even to places we would rather not go. Henri Nouwen Lenten Brochure Lenten Regulations Fast and Abstinence: All Catholics who have reached their fourteenth year are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of eighteen and fifty-nine inclusive are also bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day. Sacrament of Reconciliation During the season of Lent, we prepare to celebrate Our Lord s resurrection. To put the past behind us and begin a new life, we are called to be reconciled with one another and with God. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an excellent way to respond to God s call. Confessions are every Saturday from 4 to 4:45 P.M. On the Special Diocesan Day of Reconciliation Monday April 10 3 P.M. to 9 P.M. and at other scheduled times during Holy Week Morning Prayer In Lent The Liturgy of the Hours Monday Through Friday 8:45 A.M. -3-

4 Lenten Brochure The Journey, Cross and Crucifixion Friday April 7 8 PM In the Church A live, dramatic Presentation of the Stations of the Cross Experience the trial of Jesus His journey through the streets of Jerusalem and his final moments on the Cross A free will offering will be accepted Presented by Creative Ministries WHILE fasting with the body, brothers and sisters, let us also fast in spirit. Let us loose every bond of iniquity; let us undo the knots of every contract made by violence; let us tear up all unjust agreements; let us give bread to the hungry and welcome to our house the poor who have no roof to cover them, that we may receive mercy from Christ our God. --Byzantine Vespers DO GOOD, and evil will not overtake you. Prayer with fasting is good, but better than both is almsgiving with righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than wealth with wrongdoing. It is better to give alms than to lay up gold. For almsgiving saves you from death and purges away every sin. Tobit 12:8-10 THEREFORE, as we are about to celebrate that most eminent of all mysteries, in which the blood of Jesus Christ has wiped away all sins, let us first of all prepare to offer the sacrifice of mercy, so that what we have been given by God we may ourselves show to those who have trespassed against us. We must show more liberal bounty toward the poor and those who suffer from all kinds of affliction in order that many voices may give thanks to God and that the relief of those in need may support our fasts. Indeed, no other devotion of the faithful is more pleasing to the Lord than that which is directed toward the poor. 5 Lenten Brochure Celebrating Lenten Liturgies at St. Anthony of Padua Parish Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday March 27, 28 & 29 At the 9 AM Mass And at A Retreat Service At 7:30 PM With Father Robert Joerger, C.P. Lenten Soup Supper Wednesday March 8, PM to 7 PM Lower Church Bring a large pot of soup to share We are also accepting donations of bread Please call Karen at Or at khumphreys@saintanthonyofpadua.org At St. Anthony s Parish, we observe the Lenten fast as a preparation for the celebration of Easter and for the renewal of our Baptismal promises. Both the prayer environment in the church and some of the elements of our liturgy are different than they are during the rest of the church year. The simplicity of our prayer environment helps us to focus on what is essential the presence of Christ in the people that are gathered, in the Word that is proclaimed and the Eucharist that is shared. You will also notice that there are no flowers in the church, another reminder of the simplicity of the season. The dark purple curtains and vestments call us to that simple, yet beautiful posture of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In keeping with the penitential spirit of the season we will be singing the Kyrie Eleison or Lord, have mercy. The Gloria is not prayed during Lent. Instead of singing Alleluia to announce the Gospel, we will sing instead another verse which praises our Lord for His saving words. On Easter, our voices will ring out again Alleluia! The Lord is risen! -5-

6 Pastor s Pen Faith is not a light which scatters all our darkness, but a lamp which guides our steps in the night and suffices for the journey. - Pope Francis Every day, the world offers our children choices that challenge their faith. Your CMA gift supports the faith formation of our children at all stages of their lives. The Youth Ministry of Good Shepherd helps guide our young people on their faith journey and empowers them to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in the world today. Youth Ministry will change your life. There will be a time when you have a really bad week and you come to the group meeting and you just share, you open your heart and let everyone in you let Jesus love in. You feel so much better and you know that everything is going to be ok. Having a relationship with God is something that helps you through rough times and makes you grateful for the good times. Lauren, Youth Ministry participant Please consider donating to the Appeal and make a difference in someone s life. -6-

No, indeed we can t. But evidence does suggest that worrying can subtrac time from our life span! Clearly, we are not meant to worry. It s not healthy and it s not useful. But for many of us, it s quite difficult not to be anxious and concerned about matters that are important to us. So what is the secret to letting go of this unnecessary anxiety? Jesus gives us an answer in today s Gospel. Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. In other words, our focus should be on being faithful followers of God. When we put our trust in the providence of the One who clothes the grass of the field, and stop trying to rely on our own (meager) powers, then things will be taken care of: Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Part of the secret here, of course, is coming to accept God s will for us, even when it doesn t perfectly match what we may have been envisioning. There is a kind of surrender involved that puts God s plan first. Instead of getting worked up that things aren t going our way, this kind of reliance upon God enables us to relax and accept the way things are going. The great spiritual writer, Jean-Pierre de Caussade, put in well in his work, Abandonment to Divine Providence, when he said, To escape the distress caused by regret for the past or fear about the future, this is the rule to follow: leave the past to the infinite mercy of God, the future to His good Providence, give the present wholly to His love by being faithful to His grace. God takes care of the birds, the flowers, even the grass! He will also take care of us. -9-

25 Nocturnal Adoration Society Nocturnal Adoration is an association of Catholics no age limit dedicated to prayer in the name of the whole community and of the Church, before the Blessed Eucharist, for the praise of God and for the needs of the church and the world at large. The night of adoration is the First Friday of every month. One Hour With Him Why do members pray before the exposed sacrament? When praying before the Eucharist exposed, the mind and heart more easily give themselves to communion with Christ. By focusing attention on the sacramental sign of the memorial of the Lord in a spirit of adoration, thanksgiving, atonement, and petition, members seek to internalize and give witness to the significance of the Eucharist for Christian life. Why do members pray at night? For reasons of convenience. For many people living in a fast-paced society, a night hour is often more easily set aside for prayer than one during the day and lends itself to praying in quiet, calm, and recollection. For reasons of symbolism. Keeping vigil during the hours of the night, an ancient tradition among Christians, draws attention to God as the source of light and goodness amid human weakness and sin, and also stimulates a sense of spiritual preparedness and expectation. Can you keep watch with me for one hour? Yes, Father I would like to keep watch for one hour with the Nocturnal Adoration Society Name Address Town/State/Zip Phone Eucharistic Ministers Needed for Hospital Duty on Thursdays after the 9AM Mass.
