2 From Your Pastor I have a grapevine along the cattail slough behind the house, probably one of the few grapevines like it in town, for all I know. In the spring, it grows very quickly, climbing up the box elder tree. It even gets purple little grapes on it. The birds love them. But there s something that I find unique about my wild grapevine. My grapevine doesn t talk! We ve all heard people say, I heard by the grapevine that such and such happened, but I never hear anything from my grapevine! Is there something wrong with my grapevine? Do other people have grapevines that are different from the green one in my back yard? Kirk Douglas Surprisingly, the dictionary lists the word grapevine and defines it as spreading rumors. Such grapevines are common in all areas, but especially in small towns, they re not the type of grapevine that grows on the fence or tree in my case, but they do spread very quickly when fed with the right information. Have your ever thought about why we use the phrase, I heard by the grapevine? Let s compare the green grapevine to the grapevine of town and see what we can learn. As I ve watched my grapevine grow, I ve noticed that it goes wherever it wants to go. It doesn t grow straight up like a tree, or form a small circle like and evergreen bush. It just goes wherever it pleases, the grapevines in small towns seem to do the same thing, rumors spread randomly; they spread to whoever will listen. I ve also noticed that my grapevine spreads very rapidly. I can cut it back in the fall, but by next fall, it has gone crazy again. If I don t cut it back, it just keeps on growing and spreading farther and farther from its origin. Rumors that spread through the grapevine follow a similar pattern. They spread very rapidly and if someone doesn t put a stop to them, they keep on going and growing bigger by the moment. There s a major difference between the two grapevines. Our manmade grapevines don t carry the same information from start to finish. What you see at the end of our grapevines hardly resembles the original product! The normal green grapevines always get more green leaves that look like the other leaves, but our grapevines, or what some call the rumor mill, never carry the same information from start to finish. Grapevines also eventually die, both the manmade and the green ones. Every time winter comes my grapevine dies. Thankfully, the same happens to our manmade grapevines, or at least to the information carried down the grapevine, but usually only because it s replaced with new juicy information. Manmade grapevines and green grapevines both need someone to start them. I haven t seen a grapevine grow without someone planting it, and manmade ones are no different. If no one ever started a rumor down the grapevine, the grapevine would never exist! Wouldn t that be a change? We ve made some comparisons between the normal green grapevine and the manmade grapevine, but what good has that done? In James 3 we hear the reminder With it [our tongue] we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God, JAMES 3:1-13 out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My bothers, these things ought not to be so. Grapevines are nice on fences around the house, and in our backyard, but beyond that they seldom, if ever, serve a good purpose. What normally travels down the grapevine is usually negative, the destructive, the rumors, and the gossip. We ll never get rid of the manmade grapevines, but we sure don t need to feed them by spreading the rumors and gossip that we hear. When you start to say, I heard by the grapevine. Think again to yourself, Is this information that deserves to be spread around town or do I need to let it starve to death? When you hear some juicy gossip from the grapevine, some information that is good for nothing, squeeze it to death right on the spot! Lord, grapevines may look nice growing on the fence, but the kinds that carry gossip are far too destructive for me to keep alive. Give me the courage I need to put an end to the rumors before they destroy innocent people. Thanks for showing me the destruction that can come from manmade grapevines. May I only use them for good that comes from your free and full forgiveness of all of my sins. Amen

3 From Your Director of Christian Education Gary Bach Let s Have Echoes of Easter all Summer Long Think back for a moment to April 16, Easter Sunday at Trinity!. Beautiful lilies and colorful flowers! New life altar paraments and white cloth draped around the cross above! Pews packed with worshippers shouting He is risen indeed, ALLELUIA! Joyful music from congregation, choir, piano, organ, and instruments! Our 125 th Anniversary church bell ringing loud and true! The smiles and laughter of Christian fellowship over pancakes & sausage. Families going out into lives of celebration in the Risen Christ! And!? What a wonderful day! What a powerful atmosphere and motivation for our every day lives certainly each time we gather as God s people for worship and to receive the gifts of grace through His Word and Sacraments certainly as we share and show Jesus to a hurting dying world! Years ago I was taught that each Sunday throughout the year is to be viewed as a little Easter time to be filled with the grace of God, receive forgiveness for sin, and strengthening of our faith. We are truly blessed to see and know it all as a present reality, week in and week out, because of the first Easter! What a gift! Can you imagine the alternative? And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied. (1Corinthians 15:17 and 19) But here s the Good News! But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. (1Corinthians 15:20 and 22) Jesus Christ is risen today! Oh Lord my God How great Thou art! Let s celebrate it every day and every Sunday this summer and beyond! Summer Worship Schedule The summer worship schedule starts on Sunday, May 28th and runs through Sunday, September 3rd. Worship times are Sundays at 8:00 & 9:30 a.m. with no Education Hr. There will be no midweek worship services this summer. Questions, talk to the Board of Elders. Page 3

4 From Your Visitation Pastor When is enough, enough? Gunard Heikkila A man came home from a family gathering, and sitting at the table, he put a bunch of booklets in front of everyone. "I've been a heavy smoker for years he said and I've gotten a lot of good advice and information. I have a week s worth of reading on smoking on the table. " He looked at his family sitting around the table with him and said. "I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to quit! I'm going to quit reading. We expect a laugh or at least a chuckle out of that. Mainly because it's so real. What is more important than quitting a bad habit, is to quit praying. A man came home from a funeral for his father and announced that praying doesn't work, so he won't pray anymore since God doesn't answer them anyway. He prayed long and hard for his father to live, but he died. His mother sat next to him and asked him to remember that his daughter had become sick, almost to the point of death. Everyone prayed for her and she lived. Yes, the man said, but she got medicine that healed her. Remember when your brother was injured in the bike accident and was almost dead and everyone prayed for him and he is with us today. Sure, but he had the best surgeon in the country who patched him up. For Jesus praying was never enough. He never gave up, In fact when everyone else gave up, He prayed more. Remember on the cross how He prayed for all of us when He asked the Father, "Forgive them for they know not what they do." Let us never give up, and even when things seem impossible, to ask our Lord, give me strength to keep on praying and not give up. 125th Anniversary The following guest Pastors have been scheduled to preach in 2017 for our 125th Anniversary. They have each been asked to submit a short bio to be included in the weekly bulletin. Thanks to Greg Esala for lining them up! 6 Chip Families in June We continue to implement a life of prayer for each other, and connect to each other as fellow redeemed by having CHIP (Christians Held In Prayer) PRAYERS. Each Sunday a prayer is spoken by the Pastor & the congregation for families in the congregation that received a letter letting them know they will be held in prayer by their fellow Christians in an upcoming Sunday worship service. Trinity members then have an opportunity throughout the week to hold the families in their daily prayers, contact them personally, by phone, note, or , to let them know they are in their prayers. Below are the CHIP families to be prayed for this month. Please keep their families in your prayers and encourage them in their prayer and faith life. Hope Harbor- "Tracy Campbell never wanted to leave Hope Harbor, Oregon or the three generation cranberry farm where she grew up. But life-----and love----altered her plans. Now she's home again with a floundering farm to run...a tragic secret...and a wounded heart." It is a story where hearts heal and love blooms. #2. Sea Rose Lane- "After a devastating layoff, attorney, Eric Nash, heads back to Hope Harbor only to discover that his childhood home is being transformed into a bed and breakfast." He is constantly distracted by noise, chaos, and a prickly blond architect who's invaded the house with her motley crew. When they join forces to help Hope Harbor's older residents, might they both find a new beginning themselves? Page 10 #3. Sandpiper Cove-"Hope Harbor police chief, Lexie Graham, isn't happy when she hears about two recent incidents of vandalism at Adam Stone's place. Because the ex-con hasn't reported them, she decides to stop by his ramshackle house to see the damage for herself. She has seen Adam who looks like a biker dude, around town, but from all accounts, he's worked hard to change and is a regular at Grace Christian Church. When Leslie and Adam meet, neither of them are prepared for the electricity that sparks between them. Can a law enforcement officer and an ex-criminal ever have a future together?
