2 LITURGY No Time To Wait - Advent Week #1 by Claire McGarry You do not know when the time will come. Mark 13:33 We all know Christmas is celebrated on December 25th. So why is it that most of us feel unprepared when it arrives? With years of experience under our belts, shouldn't we have pushed back the start time for shopping, baking, decorating and wrapping? If we feel so unprepared about a celebration that comes around every year, on the same exact date, how are we going to feel when we unexpectedly come face to face with Our Maker? Overcoming procrastination is the answer. We all know how to properly prepare for Christmas: go to Confession, clean out our souls, make time and room for Christ to be born in our hearts. If we did that during this first week of Advent, we'd feel ready for Christmas, despite the cookies that still need to be baked, or the gifts that still need to be wrapped. We also know how to properly prepare for our judgment day: make amends for our wrongs, and step out in faith to build God's kingdom here on earth. If today we extend a helping hand, stand up for someone who is defenseless, or share our faith with someone who is lost, we'll be good servants, always at the ready for the "lord of the house" to return. Despite the bucket list we've yet to complete, if we spend our days living out God's command to love one another in word and action, we'll always be ready to come face to face with Him, no matter the hour. Questions For Reflection: * Do I wait too long each year to do my Christmas preparations and shopping? What is the down side of that? * Am I waiting until all my own needs are met before I reach out to take care of others? What is the down side of that? To read more reflections by Claire, visit her blog at Mass Intentions For The Week SATURDAY, December 2 4:00 PM Florent Letourneau by Florence Letourneau SUNDAY, December 3 - First Sunday of Advent 7:30 AM Daniel Murphy Jr. by Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Dunn 9:30 AM Mr. & Mrs. Camille Leger by the family 11:30 AM Regis McElhone by Kathy Altott 6:00 PM For all parishioners of St. Matthew DAILY MASS WARDE HEALTH CENTER CHAPEL MONDAY, December 4 8:30 AM Emile Marquis and Rene & Cecilia McGuire by their family TUESDAY, December 5 8:30 AM Sr. Anastasia Smith by friends WEDNESDAY, December 6 8:30 AM Kenneth Parow by Steve & Laurie Johnson 7:00 PM Joe Houle by Denise Guepy & Odile Tolme (church) THURSDAY, December 7 8:30 AM Sr. Eleanor Finn by friends FRIDAY, December 8 - Feast of the Immaculate Conception 8:30 AM John Vannoni by Alice & Michael Langone (church) 7:00 PM Mary Tolme (living) by Odile Tolme (church) SATURDAY, December 10 * * * * * 4:00 PM Lorraine Matton by her family (Anniversary) SUNDAY, December 11 - Second Sunday of Advent 7:30 AM Denis D Entremont by his mom 9:30 AM Philomena Lovallo by her daughters 11:30 AM Palma Johnson by Laurie & Steve Johnson 6:00 PM For all parishioners of St. Matthew Be watchful! Gospel For All Ages "Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come." On this First Sunday of Advent, Jesus gives us a wakeup call. This is no time for slumber. Now is the time to be on our toes, alert, attentive, ready. But for what? For the coming of "the Lord of the house." During Advent, the Church does her best to help us get ready for the second coming of Christ. We don't know precisely when he will return, but we know that he will. And the fact is, even if it doesn't happen in our lifetime, each and every one of us will still have to face the Lord at an unknown hour-namely, the hour of our death. So let us be prepared! Let us be on the watch for anything that would threaten this most important of all encounters. We want to recognize the Lord as a friend and master, so that on seeing him we don't cower in fear at his awesome power and strength. Instead, we hope to rejoice in finally being able to behold him face-to-face. This of course is the result of a healthy and holy relationship with Christ. To nurture such a relationship this Advent season the Church urges us to recommit to a life of prayer, worthy reception of the sacraments, and a commitment to following God's loving laws through a life of virtue. With these priorities in order, we can wait for the second coming with joyful anticipation, just as we joyfully await the celebration of Christmas. During these weeks as we prepare our homes for the festive holiday season, may we also set aside some time and effort to prepare our hearts. Then, not only will we appreciate the yuletide wonders around us, but we can also look forward to the eternal wonders that lie in store. Life Question: What can we do this Advent to prepare our hearts for the hour that Christ comes?
