2 LITURGY Dear Family of St. Matthew, My brothers and I once decided to climb and camp out on Mount Washington, starting from the western Cog railway side. What distinguished that trip was the weight of our backpacks. We convinced ourselves that we could carry copious amounts of soda, water, food and changes of clothing. In today s readings, Jesus advises his disciples not to carry more than the essentials. We needed to hear that message but being young and full of confidence...we wiped ourselves out by over-packing. How many of us have had similar experiences with summer vacations or preparing for a job interview? Over-burdening ourselves with anxieties and second guesses is a proven path to block us from living fully and nimbly in His grace. Also of note in the preparation for sending off his disciples, is how they are supposed to shake the dust from their feet and move on -- if they encounter a village that wants nothing to do with them. We can carry extra baggage in the form of hidden commandments or conditions. For example: I ll never be happy if they reject me. or They better listen to me because if they don t I just have to keep trying. Before the disciples arrive at a village, God is already there and His Spirit is constantly at work, both inspiring and leading people towards His light. Father Carlos Mesters used to tell his students: You don t bring God to a village when you approach with your bible. God is already there! Your job is to discover what God is doing in this village; what the history of His dealings with this village is... before you intervene. The same goes with attempting to speak about our faith without first asking (as Jesus did on the road to Emmaus): What are you discussing along the way? More than one person we know has been turned off on Christ and the Bible because the preacher or witness had no interest in what was going on in the life of the one who was on the receiving end of the religious message. It s hard to remember that God is always at work in peoples lives... even when all the evidence points to the contrary. Pro golfers are expert teachers of how to kick the dust off your feet and keep going. 3 FAMILY First Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Please join us each first Friday of the month following 8:30AM Mass in St. Matthew Church for Prayers of Adoration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Please call or stop by the Office! Gospel for All Ages One of the questions parents and teachers often ask children is, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" For younger children the answer can change from week to week. Children may say at one time, "A basketball player," and at another, "An airplane pilot," and at another, "A zookeeper." The answer could depend on whatever story or television show caught their fancy that week. But as children mature, they start considering seriously the answer to that question. As they enter college they begin directing their lives toward what will be a particular profession in life. This weekend's Gospel highlights the need for workers in the harvest of the kingdom of God. Jesus sends out disciples ahead of him so that they can prepare the way for the places that he intends to visit. But the text is not only about what took place in Galilee and Judea two thousand years ago. As the living word of God, the Gospel also speaks to our lives today. The need for laborers for the harvest is just as great RIGHT NOW as it was in AD 32. As a matter of fact, the need is even greater, since the proclamation of the Gospel goes on in so many more places than in the first century of Christianity. Parents and grandparents can influence what their children and grandchildren think about as appropriate life choices. We don't need a specific "Vocation Sunday" to ask the question of sons or daughters or grandchildren if they have ever considered the possibility of a religious vocation. The Holy Spirit might just be working through you if you ask. While a life of ministering to others may have its own trials and difficulties, it can also be filled with great joy and satisfaction. Is there someone you can ask, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" After all, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few." (Lk 10:2) 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc
