Peter answered, The Messiah of God. Luke 9: 20 I was thinking this past week that Jesus was the original pollster. He asked his disciples rather nonchalantly who the people were saying he was. The names offered up by the disciples in answer to Jesus question were a bit diverse, but not surprising; John the Baptist, Elijah, and the less specific answer, one of the ancient prophets. And then Jesus got much more to the point with his polling; he asked his disciples, Who do you think I am? There was no wiggle room in that question; it was time to fish, or cut bait. Peter, being the consummate fisherman, was not going to cut bait. He replied, The Messiah of God. I suppose that if Jesus polled each of us with that question, the answers would be rather diverse. After all, none of us have ever met Jesus face to face, and even those souls who had offered up different opinions. As in politics, our views sometimes change with the seasons. The pollsters make a very good living, analyzing where we all stand. Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Millennials, Generation Next, we ve all been neatly classified like specimens in someone s science collection. The famous pollster George Gallup was even quoted as saying, I could prove God statistically. But the fact is that despite their best efforts, the pollsters still get it wrong. We humans have a tendency to abruptly change direction. As in the current election cycle, there s no predicting who or what will grab our attention. Sometimes it s for our own good and sometimes not so much. But we humans have a tendency to change with the seasons, and sometimes entirely without any good reason. Jesus, as a human, was remarkably consistent. His views rarely changed on things around him. He would have been a pollsters delight. He was the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.
3 From the Rector (continued) This being so, he could ask the disciples that question: Who do you say that I am? It was his measuring stick of the mindset of those who traveled with him. It was as if Jesus was asking, Have you figured things out yet? Do you really know me? Each day, Jesus polls each of us in our own respective hearts. Actually, if the truth be known, he s polling each of us twenty-four/seven. Sometimes we re listening and sometimes not, but that doesn t mean Jesus isn t asking. Sometimes he throws in a little turmoil into our lives, to help us refocus on his question. I believe that to hear that quiet voice of Jesus is the focus of one s lifetime. We are so easily distracted by all the noise around us. We are so easily diverted from that voice by the attractions and the racket that surround us. We often think that Jesus has abandoned us, yet his quiet voice is still right there with us. As we struggle with the problems that from time to time consume us, beneath the surface is still that tender, loving voice of Jesus. Who, the master pollster asks, do you really think I am? Summer Blessings, Fr. Dave Parish Prayer List Parish Prayer Requests: Jackson, Karen, Joan (Jo-ann), Dylan, Phil, Heidi, Derrill, Don, Susan, Fran, Carrie, Becky, David, Sarah, Marie, Roland, Doña Josie, Ben, Terry, Judy, Kristi, Emmy, Hudson, Joann, Phillip, Julie, Allen, Debbie, Malon, Elizabeth, Bella, Russell, Nancy, John, Meredith, Andrew, Mary, Kathey, Jamie, Brannon, Leslee, Greg, Marcus, Garrett, Carole, Andrea, Walt, Phebe, Rob, Craig, Tanya, Charlie, Harold, John, Madalen, Terry, Robert, Maryellen, K. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer, page 253 ) God the King of Glory, in whose hands are the living and the dead: We give you thanks for all those who have laid down their lives in the service our country. Grant them your mercy and the light of your presence; give us a sense of your will and purpose, that we may understand that the work you have begun I them will be perfected through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, in whom all strife is resolved. Amen. (From Enriching our Worship 3)

How does grief look and feel? How am I supposed to deal with it? Does grief affect kids and adults differently? How long does it take to "get over it"? How do I know if I am doing better? It feels like I am going crazy, am I? These sessions are one hour in duration and are held quarterly at: HospiceMidland 911 W. Texas Ave June 13 th, Monday 12:00 1:00 pm You will learn about grief and how to cope with the death of someone you love. Feel free to bring your lunch. Thank you. Interfaith Conference-Lubbock Bridget Hyde, Jessica Stewart and Edna Hibbitts were privileged attend the Interfaith Conference in Lubbock on April 16 th. Sister Simone Campbell,
5 author of A Nun on The Bus, discussed how all of us can create hope, change and community. Her examples and experience are very wide ranging from inner city work, advocacy, teaching and challenging unfounded prejudice. Her deep faith in Christ s call to us to know and respect people of other faiths, races and nationalities as Jesus called us to do by his example, was challenging and hope filled at the same time. She is an admirer of Pope Francis in this respect. She challenged us to meet people in I-thou relationships, avoiding labels and epithets and to educate ourselves well enough to challenge convenient myths. The breakout sessions moderated by other faith clergy or leaders gave us all a chance to go deeper into practices, scriptures and cultures. The three of us split up to cover almost every topic. We came away with one profound impression that much harm is done by cherry picking the writing and teaching of any faith to suit a particular agenda. It is the basis of nearly every extreme group, Christian, Muslim or whomever, and has led to tragic consequences in every age of history. We are convinced that we have a lot of homework to do in addition to soul searching prayer! Jesus did not limit his mission to the Jews alone. Education for Ministry "Education for Ministry, or EfM, is a unique four-year distance learning certificate program in theological education based upon small-group study and practice." (This quote is taken from the EfM website.) EfM is an Episcopal learning model that comes from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennesee. The hope of EfM studies is to learn more about the foundations of Christianity and try to discern how you are called to live the message of Jesus. Even though the origin and the base for these studies is rooted in the Episcopal tradition, the course is open to all Christians of varying denominations. Bridget Hyde, J'Lynn Wheeler and Terry Joliffe will be the mentors for an upcoming EfM group that will be hosted at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. This group will meet on Tuesday nights from 6pm to 8:30pm. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, August 30th If you are interested in this program, I invite you to explore the following link: Also, feel free to speak with me or with other EfM participants/graduates about the EfM experience and how it influenced them. Sincerely, Bridget Houston Hyde St. Nicholas Episcopal Church Vestry Minutes May 19, 2016 Present: Bridget H., Janet C., Mary W., Bobby N., Joe Cobb, Cindy M., Pamela H., Dn. New Business: John Todd regarding Richard Rohr possible visit. Fee one day workshop to large group, $2500. Small number around 25 would be great ($1000 for that). Both prices must add in expenses. Must submit written request to him from his website. 60-day window for application process. If we want him to come in fall, must begin application immediately. We would receive an answer from him in 10 days. Rohr is limiting his travel. Perhaps figured gas $400; hotel, $100, maybe another $150 for dinner with others. We are willing at least to try to get him to come. Mary asks, what do we want? Fr. Dave says maybe put the idea in front of the book study and then also announce at coffee hour. Discuss maybe 50 people total in the parish hall. Might consider a $25 fee per person. Talk to Edna about ECW funding. We d need to apply in June for maybe September. Move to empower Bridget and John to fill out application and send it in. Pamela moves, Cindy 2 nd, unanimously in favor. Godly Play Blessing of the Animals Next month s devotion by Joe Cobb. Pamela volunteers July. Bridget August. Mary September. 8:00 finished with Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted, Mary Williams, Clerk
