1 Westminster News JULY 31, 2013 ISSUE #517 Laughing is the shortest distance between two people. Victor Borge Inside this issue: SESSION NOTES 2 AUGUST CALENDAR 3 CHILDREN/YOUTH 4-5 EDUCATION PROGRAMS 6-7 YOUTH AT THE LAKE 7 MISSION 8-9 OUR MEMBERS 10 PONTOON EVENT! 11 WORSHIP LEADERS 12 AUGUST BIRTHDAYS 13 THOREAU SUPPLY DRIVE S EEK WAKE! EEK TO B E A WAKE Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these But seek first for the kingdom of God and righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:25-26,28-29,33 There is a story about the Buddha in which he was traveling through the countryside bringing much insight and wisdom to the people he would meet along the way. His reputation as a spiritual teacher was growing to such an extent that a number of teachers and scholars sought him out to discover the source of his wisdom. One day they found him sitting under a tree alongside the road and they began to press him about where he had learned such insightful things about the world. Did you study under a great teacher, they asked. Was there some book that he had discovered that gave him knowledge about our human condition? The B u d d h a s m i l e d a n d l o o k e d compassionately upon these great teachers and simply said, No, I am just awake! I love this story in part because in its assertion that simply being awake, truly open and alive to the moment, brings us closer to God. This is counter intuitive in a culture in which we are always striving and seeking the next best thing that may bring us wisdom or peace or perfection. One only has to go to the self -improvement section of the bookstore to find advice on how to cultivate successful habits, win friends, grow rich, and even discover The Secret to a happy life. It seems anticlimactic to assert that you do not need to find God as much as God finds you. Jesus was awake. He was awake to God s presence all around him. In the midst of his great sermon on the mountain, he asserted that all the anxiety and worry of our striving are silly. Look at the birds of the air he said. Consider the lilies of the field. In other words, simply wake up to the world around you and you will see God s hand at work, caring for all of creation. Wake up to the reality this same God provides for us in good times and in bad times. As Jim Finley wrote, The grace of God utterly and wholly permeates our lives. In these dog days of August, we will seek in our spiritual practices to be awake and aware. For God s kingdom is found not in the future or in some place or time far away, but in the present moment when we are awake to the grace of God. To God be the glory! Alex

4 PAGE 4 MISSION TRIP REPORT & REFLECTIONS ~ EPORT & R June 30-July 3 seven youth and two adults traveled to St. Paul, Minnesota for an opportunity to gather with other Christians and serve in the community. The trip went very well and we thank the whole congregation for your support to make it happen! Here are a few reflections from participants: My favorite parts of the trip were meeting new Okie friends and serving at the homeless shelter. Adam Dohrn Jones The best part about the mission trip was all the new people I met. Last year when we went to Green Bay, we had five people and the other two groups both had upwards of thirty. This year no group really had a ton more people than any other, so it wasn't intimidating to walk up to a group of people that you didn't know and say hi. Henry Johnson I live in a Catholic family and this was my first EVER mission trip. For awhile I haven't been feeling as close to God, but while I was on this trip, I felt like my bond with him/her was growing stronger. Being surrounded by nice people who accept my opinion has helped me to form my own beliefs. Hannah, Anna, Henry, Chris, Jennifer, Adam and Aileen welcomed me with open arms and now I feel I can call them my family. Even though the mission trip was cut short down to four days, our hamburger week with only two meat patties and a bun, it has played a major role in my life. I now plan on attending church with Hannah in the fall and hope to go on any future mission trips with my new friends from the Westminster Youth Group. Gabby Watson Five Westminster members joined with 29 others from the John Knox Presbytery to travel to the Presbyterian Youth Triennium July Triennium is held every three years and this year s event brought together 5,200 Presbyterian Youth from the USA and Canada with many international guests. Among the international guests were two guests from Portugal hosted by John Knox Presbytery. We enjoyed the opportunity to welcome Marisa Rodrigues Goncalves and Mariana Guimaraes de Assumao to our congregation on July 21 as part of their TRIENNIUM REPORT & REFLECTIONS ~ EPORT & R post-triennium visit to our Presbytery. Here are reflections from two of our participants: Don t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12 A girl from Nebraska posted that verse in our Facebook group a few days ago, a page we created to keep in contact with each other after the week ended. I think this verse really shows the spirit of Triennium. At Triennium we weren't referred to as "the future of the church," instead we were the present and were encouraged, even expected to really get involved in our churches and in our own spiritual lives. Never have I ever been with such a large group of nice, cool, enthusiastic, funny, passionate people and I am so grateful of Westminster and John Knox Presbytery for supporting us through this experience! Coming home from the trip I feel as if my faith has been jump-started, completely rejuvenated and I'm so excited to see how my fellow youth and I are called to work after such an inspiring week! Kate Martin When I was at Triennium I saw God in the people I met and interacted with! I loved spending time with such kind and warm people who praised the same God of love and said the same Lord's Prayer that I did! I can very confidently call the week I spent at Triennium the best in my life! It was a gre at experience strengthening my relationship with God with such wonderful and supportive people! 5 WESTMINSTER NEWS PAGE 5 WANT TO HELP WITH CHILDREN OR YOUTH MINISTRIES INISTRIES? Children and Youth Ministries may be focused on the younger generation, but they are a great way for adults to learn too! Our children and youth have a lot to teach us and in all our children and youth programs at Westminster we seek to be disciples on a journey, learning about God together. Adults are necessary to all of our programs and there are a number of ways for adults to come on the journey if you are interested. Here are some of the ways for adults to participate in the school year: "If we are to teach real peace in this world, and if we are to carry on a real war against war, we shall have to begin with the children." Mohandas Gandhi 9TH HOUR CHILDREN HILDREN S MINISTRIES SET UP/CLEAN UP BREAKFAST REAKFAST, 8:45-9:30 SUNDAYSS 8:45 9:30 S We will be offering a light breakfast for our children each Sunday when they first arrive. We need volunteers who can set out the breakfast items and clean up. TEACH FOR A WEEK OR THREE, 10AM SUNDAYS 9-10 Our topics for 9 th Hour education will change as we move through the year. We need people who can lead a session for one week, or lead a series for two to three weeks. Topics for the fall are mostly set; we will need people to help lead m u s i c, t ea c h about communion, share about Christians around the world, teach about stewardship and giving in the church, and help with the Christmas pageant. If you have other ideas for topics you would like to lead next winter or spring please also volunteer with those ideas. CHILDREN S WORSHIP, 10:45-11:30 SUNDAYS CHILDREN HILDREN S WORSHIP LEADER EADER, 2-3 SUNDAYSS A MONTH 3 S As a Children s Worship leader, for either the younger or older Children s Worship, you will be asked to look over the story, music, and activity ahead of time and make sure any supplies you need are in place. You will then lead Children s Worship. CHILDREN HILDREN S WORSHIP HELPER ELPER, 1 SUNDAYS A MONTH 1 S As a Children s Worship helper, for either the younger or older Children s Worship, you will come to Children s Worship and participate helping the leader as needed. SPAM SPONSOR S PONSOR,, 4-6PM4 1ST AND 3RD SUNDAYS Come hang out with the youth at SPAM! Sponsors attend SPAM as often as they can and are invited to help lead activities on occasion. The most important part of this role is to build relationships with the youth. SPAM Sponsors often also help with any other youth events or fundraisers, but it is not necessary. CRAFT SUPPLY WRANGLER Creative expressions of our faith is part of all that we do in Children and Youth Ministries, but keeping all of our markers, stickers, and glue organized is a constant challenge. We need one or two people who are willing to come in on their own time to keep track of supplies, note what is running low, and help leaders to find the unusual items. If you are interested in being part of the Children and Youth programs by serving in any of these capacities please contact Pastor Kathleen.

6 PAGE 6 CHANGES IN OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS The Education Committee spent a great deal of time reflecting on our education programs over the course of the last year. This fall you will start to see some changes in a few of our programs. 9 T H T H H OUR C H I L D R E N N S E D U CA TI ON This year we are moving away from a structured curriculum based 9 th Hour Sunday School and instead will use the 9 th Hour education time for a variety of focused education opportunities. In the fall we will explore; music, communion, Christians a r o u n d t h e w o r l d, stewardship, what it means to be part of a congregation, what we believe about life after death, and prepare a Christmas Pageant! There will be a light breakfast served for the children each week as well. We hope that all kids age 3-7 th grade will enjoy this new education opportunity. C h i l d r e n s w o r s h i p continues to be a valuable worship experience for our younger members. This year we are adding a second C h i l dr e n s W o r sh i p opportunity. Our children age 3-2 nd grade will continue to explore the Young Children and Worship program we have used for many years. For those in 3 rd -7 th grade we are adding a second Children s Worship program. In the Children s Worship geared to older kids we will be going into more depth in our Bible stories and reflection time and also focus on learning key parts of Christian worship, such as the Lord s Prayer, Apostle s and Nicene Creeds, along with Bible verses and hymns. We are going to try a new program this year called First Sunday Family Night. This will be an opportunity for our families to gather f o r e d u c a t i o n (opportunities for children, youth, and parents) followed by dinner and fellowship. Look for more information and details in the fall! (Westminster on Wednesdays) WOW is moving to Oakwood! Starting in the fall we will have W e s t m i n s t e r o n Wednesdays, still on the Fourth Wednesday, but at Oakwood and meeting in the afternoon instead of lunchtime. There will be a program followed by snacks and fellowship. L o o k f o r m o r e information and details in the September newsletter. The Education Committee is excited about the changes that are coming this year. If you are interested in being part of the team coordinating all o f o u r e duc at i o n opportunities please contact Carl Martin, chair o f t h e E d u c at i o n Committee. We are l o o k i n g f o r n e w committee members. The committee meets on Second Mondays at 7pm. f JULY 31, 2013

The focus will be on paying attention to our breath and relaxing. 9TH HOUR ADULT EDUCATION There will be two adult education opportunities this fall during 9th Hour. 9th Hour is from 9-10am on Sunday mornings beginning September 15th and open to anyone 8th grade and older. The Education Committee is excited to announce the fall classes. THE HUNGER GAMES Leader: Prof. Donna Norton We are excited about the interest in this class that will run from Sept. 15 to Oct. 27. On the 9/15 we will have an introduction and give you a study/discussion guide that emphasizes the themes, characterizations, and moral issues you might want to consider. The guide will also include how the books relate to biblical topics. As you read the books you might want to consider the following quote from Dante's "The Divine Comedy." "The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis." Enjoy your reading. It should be an exciting study and discussion. **There are two sets of The Hunger Games trilogy available for check-out in the church office for anyone who wants to read these books over the summer. "SKEPTICS AND BELIEVERS: RELIGIOUS DEBATE IN THE WESTERN INTELLECTUAL TRADITION. 9 WESTMINSTER NEWS PAGE 9 NEWS FROM THE ROAD HOME & OUR SECOND CHANCE FAMILY NEWS OME & O {Published in The Road Home newsletter, 2013} Dear Road Home ~ My children {Wade,17, Charly May, 14, Brianca, 12 and Jade, 9} and I came to Madison in August of I lost my job in Miami, Florida and we were evicted from our apartment. Miami was becoming crime-ridden and unsafe to raise a family. Since we had relatives in Madison, and I heard it was a great place to live, we drove to Madison with only $300 and our clothes. We first came into contact with The Road Home while staying at the Warming House, run by The Salvation Army & The Road Home. There we applied for emergency shelter at both places. We were accepted into The Salvation Army emergency shelter, but it was only a 90-day program, and it was a struggle to find an affordable place to call home. At the end of our stay, we were accepted into The Road Home's Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) Shelter. The volunteers were fabulous - they provided three meals a day, evening activities and overnight accommodations. In addition, they helped provide transportation to us to get to important meetings, school; and my son was especially grateful for the rides to football practice. While in shelter, I had difficulty being approved for housing. My case manager really advocated for my family and had me apply for all the housing programs at The Road Home. We were excited to be accepted into the Second Chance Apartment Program, a two-year program where 30% of my income goes toward paying outstanding b i l l s. O u r s p o n s o r s, Westminster Church and the Shorewood Village, provided our family with a beautiful apartment including donated furniture, supplies and household items. On moving day, the church volunteers moved us in, and they even insisted on helping us clean the apartment. They have been a great support. My mentor has been wonderful, and our sponsors have helped us with transportation, appointments and other needs. My children and I enjoy our neighborhood; they are doing well in school and looking forward to enjoying the summer. My son Wade will soon be graduating from high school and enrolling at MATC. My long-term goal is to improve my credit and housing history, so once we complete the Second Chance Apartment Program, we will move into a stable and affordable home. The Road Home Dane County has been a blessing to my family. Sincerely, Mary, Wade, Charly May, Brianca and Jade Let s Get Ready to Rummage! Storage Room 8 is available, {all the way through to the back room} to hold your donations for the fall Rummage Sale! Dr. Seuss, The Cat in the Hat Sunday, August Two pontoon boats are r e s e r v e d f o r a Westminster outing on Lake Mendota. Each boat carries a maximum of 12 people; which means no more than 24 folks can sign up for this event. The sign-up sheet was passed around on Sunday July 28 ~ and as of this writing, only two seats remain to be filled! First come, first served; to get signed up in the last two seats, please call {the ever-encouragable} Julie Madden, Our trip will last about 3 hours, and tickets are $8.00 per adult; {kids under 12 ride free}. Gather at 12:30 in Tenney Park; the boat loading area is at 1615 Sherman Ave, across from the locks at the blue & white sign: MSCR Pontoon Landing. Park across the street. f Untapped Resources While taking photos of the earth, the space shuttle Columbia made a surprising discovery: Underneath the harsh Sahara Desert were twenty-six lakes, as well as miles of underground rivers. That region s inhabitants face tough conditions because those abundant resources haven t yet been tapped. Churches often suffer a similar problem. Congregations can t reach their full God-given potential unless people discover and use their gifts. When we tap into our talents, however, God promises that we will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail (Isaiah 58:11). Looking for Photos of Mary Jean! We are looking for a picture of Mary Jean Bartholomew! Do you have a photo from your wedding? Perhaps you have one of Mary Jean at your child s confirmation? How about a picture of her at the infamous Westminster Valentine s Day Tea? Did she attend your circle? Mary Jean was such an important and integral part of our Westminster family and we can t believe she was that camera shy. She does not need to be alone (that s why there s Photoshop!) but we would prefer that the photo shows her looking forward. Please search through your photo stash, enjoy the trip down memory lane and see if you can find a picture of Mary Jean. A photograph, slide or digital image will all work. If you have any questions, please contact Sandy Curran. Drop the photo off in the office or mail it in. Thank you for your help! Æ

For many years now Westminster has helped, as part of our partnership with Thoreau, to provide needed supplies. There are copies of the Thoreau school supply list included in this newsletter and in the Narthex. If you can help by purchasing all or some of the needed supplies for one child please bring the supplies to church August There will be a box next to the food pantry box to collect the supplies. If you don t want to battle the crowds around the pencils and glue sticks, we will also accept checks written to Westminster with Thoreau School Supplies in the memo line. We will use any money donated this way to get gift cards for Thoreau staff to use to purchase what is still needed once school starts. Thanks for supporting our neighbors and partners at Thoreau!
