1 Centenary United Methodist Church June 2011 FIFTH SUNDAY FESTIVAL: MAY 29, 2011, 10 a.m. Sunday, May 29, is the fifth Sunday of the month. For us that means we get to gather as one congregation from all three services. Beginning at 10am, our Fifth Sunday Festival in May will include all three of our newly-trained Lay Speakers as well as both of our pastors. In the course of the service, we ll each take about 3 to 5 minutes to tell how God has spoken to us through a certain song, says Dr. Joe Scheets. Then we ll all get to sing that song together. In one slight change of plans, due to both the Memorial Day weekend and Effingham High School graduation early Sunday afternoon there will be no meal following worship. Of course we ll enjoy our shared lunch at the next Fifth Sunday Festival, laughs Dr. Joe Scheets. You know we love that here at Centenary! Mission Trip Rummage Sale! Saturday, June 11 th 8am-noon Centenary Garage How can you help? 1 Come to the sale!! 2 Donate clean items in good repair for the sale. Bring them to the church garage during regular office hours or on Sunday mornings starting in May. NO ADULT CLOTHING WILL BE ACCEPTED. 3 If you want the profits from your rummage donations to support a specific youth, give your items directly to that youth. 4 If you want to participate in the rummage sale, contact Sue Ann Minor for a tag number. 5 If you have questions call Laurie King ( ) or Sue Ann Minor ( ) 1

2 Pastor Joe Here we are between Mother s Day and Father s Day. You ll like what Helen Lee, author of The Missional Mom: Living with Purpose at Home and in the World, said recently. When asked how churches can support and encourage parents in general and moms in particular, she had this to say First of all, help them understand the truth that their calling is the same as it was before they became a mom: love God and pursue Him, first and foremost. Second, encourage moms to embrace God's mission for them, which is to be his witness and disciple-maker to the world around them. Third, help them understand their areas of giftedness and encourage them to use these gifts in service to Kingdom work rather than assuming the moms should all serve in their children's ministry. Fourth, help moms (and dads!) embrace the biblical mandate to be their children's primary spiritual teachers as opposed to assuming the church should take that role. Fifth, highlight stories of those who are living out missional values, either at home or in the workplace or wherever else God has placed them, as a way to inspire others and affirm missional living when you see it. Those are just a few ideas. She packs a lot into those five simple points! Which will you start prayerfully living this week? See you in worship if not before! Yours in Christ, Dr. Joe Scheets 2

This book could change your life, by changing your relationship with money. We Americans love our stuff. We re living in a fast-paced, me-first, instant-gratification world, and it s finally catching up to us. Debt is out of control, homes are in foreclosure... even banks are going out of business. What the world needs today is the message of contentment and simplicity, and that s exactly what Pastor Adam Hamilton delivers in Enough. 6 Newsletter Schedule The newsletter is sent out at the end of each month to let you know about all that is happening the following month. The deadline for articles is the 3 rd Wednesday of each month. THANKS!! Our Newsletter is available on the church website. The Centenary Newsletter is once again available on the church website. Please check it out at If you would like to stop receiving your newsletter by mail, please give us your e- mail address, and I will notify you when the newsletter is available on the website. Name: Address: Office Hours 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Phone #: Please me at conni@effinghamcumc.com From the Desk of: Rev. Randy Reese, District Superintendent Embarras River District 6 As Imagine No Malaria heads down the road, I want to share some thoughts with you this morning that I pray will help you and your church family catch the passion about making possibly the biggest testimony and statement to the world about the goodness and grace of God that has been seen in hundreds of years or longer. By the time this letter is finished, sent to Pat, forwarded to you by or snail mail, (maybe an hour), 120 kids in Africa will have died from malaria. As one of the founding partners of the Nothing But Nets campaign, we have been asked by the United Nations to be the faith based organization to lead the charge to eliminate malaria in Africa by What a privilege to be used of God to make this statement to Africa, America, and the world that He, Almighty Everlasting God cares, and cares in a dramatic, significant, and practical way. The goal of the United Methodist Church is to raise $75 million.our conference.$2.3 million.and our district has been challenged for $275,000. $275,000 sounds like a staggering amount of money to raise over the next three years.but there is a bunch of us, clergy and laity, that believe that it s not only possible, but are willing to put time, efforts, and energy to make a difference in the name of Jesus. I m a numbers person so let me help you figure this out for a moment. Based on 2009 statistics, we averaged 5014 persons in worship throughout the district. Our 3 year plan for the district: If everyone attending would share $1.60 a month for three years, we will meet our goal. This is our chance to shine for Jesus. For Centenary to reach the goal set by our Bishop, we need to raise $17,500 over three years.

8 B ook Club News Our summer reading selection will be Bone Man's Daughters by Ted Dekker. We will come together the last Sunday in August to discuss this Christian mystery thriller. In Bone Man s Daughters, I explore the love of the Father for the one lost sheep, a prodigal son story with a daughter, inspired by my own daughter. How far will a father go to save a daughter in harm s way? How far will God go to rescue us from the pit? 10 CPR Heartline Box The Centenary Personal Responder Team has placed the Heartline box in the Connection Area for everyone to help keep our church family caring for each other. Our hope and our prayer is that you will use this box as a way of letting the church know your needs, prayer requests, or any situation that someone is burdened with and you feel that a church presence is needed. We are hoping that this box will help us put action to your needs. We want it to be a Heartline between you and the church. The CPR members will take turns opening the box regularly and we will see that your requests are taken care of ASAP. Also, all CPR members are required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Food for the Catholic Charities Food Pantry We collect food for Catholic Charities each month to help them supply food to those in need in our area. Please bring your donation to church any Sunday, and on the third Monday of the month we will deliver our donations to them. Items needed are: toilet paper, canned meats, pastas and sauce. Since we will be collecting all month, our hope is that more people will participate. We are looking forward to seeing a mound of food in the Connection Area. 12 Thank you for the quilts, wash cloths, hats, and toiletries that you provided to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center. These items will help us provide aid to people who are experiencing poverty or other devastating events in their lives. Your support and generosity are greatly appreciated. The work of the MMDC continues to go well and the volunteers are kept busy with preparation of flood buckets and health kits, sewing school bags and children s hospital gowns, filling school bags, and preparing mailings. From January 1 to March 31, 2011, 535 volunteers from 99 different churches in 8 different states, giving, 6,921 volunteer hours have served at the MMDC and we have received 18, 860 pounds in in-kind donations. In 2010 MMDC responded to the Haiti earthquake relief, as well as participated in shipments of supplies to the Congo, Ghana, Philippines, Cuba, Honduras, Nicaragua, Kenya, Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa, Guatemala, Pointe-Noire, Panama, and more. Many lives have been touched throughout the United States and in developing countries around the world through shipments made from the Center. Your gift will allow work to continue. Pat Wright, Executive Director Dear Centenary Family, I want to thank you for the generous gift for speaking at the Lenten Service on April 6. It was a very kind and generous thing to do. I wish to donate my check back to the Music Department. Years of experience have taught me that most music ministries can use a few more dollars to enhance what they do. Please know that it was a great joy to spend the evening at Centenary. The people extended an amazingly warm welcome that thrilled us. Our memories of our time there were enriched even more because of that evening. God bless all of you. As you seek to know Christ, grow in Christ, and show Christ making the difference. Don Burroughs The Music Arts Association wants to say thank you for the use of your church on April 16, 2011 to hold our Music Festival. Please accept this donation on behalf of our members. Annette Clausius, MAA Thank you for hosting the Blood Drive on May 19th. Thanks to your participation in the blood program, many patients in hospitals across our region have been helped. American Red Cross Cunningham Guardian Parent Notes...May 2011 Last month our youth enjoyed the Easter season complete with an egg hunt, candy, and a special chapel service where they heard about God s love and promise of a better life a new beginning. After an inspiring chapel service, one young lady shared with our Chaplain, I feel like this is a new beginning for me. I can t help but look around and watch our kids and realize that each day is an opportunity to heal and to grow and to embrace a new beginning. I am also continuously thankful for the role YOU, a faithful Guardian Parent, play in helping to support activities and experiences that provide new beginnings for our youth. We want to personally say thank you and invite you to visit Cunningham to see first hand your support is making a wonderful difference in our kids lives. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the Guardian Parent Appreciation Event on Saturday, July 23. I look forward to seeing you in July!! Typically, we sing in a dozen or more summer worship services for area churches. Because of the publicity and your encouragement, we ve already raised over $6,000 in the past 4 months (Christmas and Lenten Benefit Concerts) for area Food Pantry and Homeless Shelter programs. Our only money maker for the year is our Annual Show and it will be held on Saturday, June 11th at 4 PM in the Dvorak Concert Hall on the campus of EIU in Charleston. The theme this year is Sounds of the City and with the 35 man chorus, who recently placed third in Illinois competition, and several local quartets, this 41st Annual event should again be very entertaining. The feature quartet is called Lunch Break (Nashville, TN) and they were Semi-Finalists in International competition last summer. They are a comedy quartet and the show is FAMILY rated. There is adequate parking and the facilities are wheel chair friendly. Show tickets are $12 each. Should you want to stay for more singing and dinner at the EIU Student Union, those tickets are $16 each. Tickets can be purchased at the door, however it is best to get them in advance in the event of a sell out. Les Heath ( ) is the Ticket Chairman.
