1 Milltown Tidings June 2018 June is upon us and it s going to be a busy month. Beginning with Synod Assembly, June 2 nd and 3 rd, where we will elect a new bishop and say farewell to Bishop Rick Hoyme. The month ends with the ELCA National Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas a gathering we are looking forward to. During the weeks in-between we will gather at the Pioneer Home in Luck for a memorial service for our friend Bernice Hansen, we will worship, pray, study, learn to bake bread, and celebrate the ministry of Pr. Mel Rau at Fristad Lutheran as he retires. That s a lot but it occurs to me that this is what we do together as the Body of Christ; we celebrate, remember, grieve, learn, pray, and worship together, as a community. And at the heart of who we are stands the cross of Christ. The theme for the Youth Gathering is This Changes Everything based on a portion of St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians which reads, For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. Notice that it s the cross that stands at the heart of the Gathering logo, as well. The cross reminds us of God s grace, through Christ s life, death and resurrection, that changes everything for all people. Some people ask, Why a Gathering? The following are testimonies from former Youth Gathering participants who respond to that very question: The Gathering simultaneously challenged my faith and reassured my faith. --Adam Fairchild, Westminster, MD I think one of the biggest things I took away from the gathering was the realization that I really was making a difference in this world. That my life matters. --Luisa Ruge-Jones, Champaign, IL What really impacted me, and made me stop and gaze in wonder, was seeing 30,000 other teenagers just like me, worshipping and praying, serving and learning. --Tin-Tin Lee, Tacoma, WA The Gathering is a place you get to understand more of what it means to be Lutheran. --Lance Cooper, Baltimore, MD It was very inspirational. I had the opportunity to meet new people who shared my love for Christ. I had the opportunity to serve others. --Youth Participant, Rise Up Together 2015 It was amazing! I loved how excited everyone was to praise God and serve the community. It was a positive and uplifting experience! --Youth Participant, Rise Up Together 2015 Why a Gathering? The Gathering is an extension of who we are at Milltown Lutheran Church another way for the Body of Christ to gather together around bread and wine, prayer and singing, love and service. Another way for us to be ministers of the Word in our daily lives, congregation, community, and world (Milltown Lutheran Church Mission Statement). For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God. This changes everything! Thanks be to God. Pastor Angie 1

5 COMMUNION BREAD MAKING CLASS Tuesday, June 19 th at 6:30PM Devotion followed by baking and sampling bread. Whether you've been to the class before or are brand new to baking... this is for you!" All are welcome! You will have the opportunity to: sign up to bake, prepare, or substitute as needed. THE BEST COMMUNION BREAD! Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix wet ingredients together until dissolved: 1 cup very hot water (minimum of 180 degrees F) Approximately 3 TB honey Approximately 3 TB molasses Set aside and allow to cool slightly as your sift together dry ingredients. Sift the following dry ingredients together three times: (important!) 2 c whole wheat flour +1 c white flour +1 1/4 tsp baking powder + 1 1/4 tsp salt Next, stir 4 Tbsp oil into dry ingredients. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients little by little and mix well. Mix by hand (not with a mixer). Dough should be slightly sticky. Do not knead. Divide into four balls and flatten each into a 1/4 inch thick disk using hands. Lay the loaves on a baking sheet, 2 per sheet. Using stoneware and no parchment OR metal cookie sheet lined with parchment. With a knife, score the top of each loaf into eight pie-shaped sections, so that the sections can be more easily broken off while serving. Alternatively, you could score a cross onto the loaf. Bake one sheet (2 loaves) at a time. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes on top rack. Remove from oven and lightly brush the tops of the loaves with oil. Bake an additional 5-8 minutes. Let cool 1.5 hours. Yield: four 8 oz. loaves. Each loaf serves 50 60*** people, depending upon the size of the piece given. Hints: 1. Make sure all the wet stuff is dissolved before adding to the dry ingredients. 2. Cool 1.5 hours wrap in foil + ziplock bag. 3. Can be frozen for use during the month. Lessons I ve learned: 1. DO not brush tops with too much oil. 2. Err on the side of generosity and add more of when the recipe says: Approximately 3 Tablespoons of the honey and molasses for flavor. 5
