O Israel, the one who formed you says, Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you. I have called you by name; you are mine. 2 When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. 3 For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I gave Egypt as a ransom for your freedom; I gave Ethiopia and Seba in your place. 4 Others were given in exchange for you. I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you. 5 Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will gather you and your children from east and west. 6 I will say to the north and south, Bring my sons and daughters back to Israel from the distant corners of the earth.

LISTENING TO GOD SPEAK TO US THROUGH HIS WORD Romans 6: What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. (sung) 15 Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah. 16 John answered their questions by saying, I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am so much greater that I m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 17 He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire. 18 John used many such warnings as he announced the Good News to the people. 19 John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother s wife, and for many other wrongs he

5 had done. 20 So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others. 21 One day when the crowds were being baptized, Jesus himself was baptized. As he was praying, the heavens opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy. 10 New Bible Study: Starting Sunday, Jan. 20th, Pastor Adam will be leading a new bible study from 9:45-10:45 focusing on key biblical themes throughout Scripture utilizing videos from "The Bible Project." Themes will include: God, Heaven & Earth, The Holy Spirit, Holiness, Covenants, Atonement, & more. Online Giving: Did you know that we offer online giving? You are now offered the freedom to prayerfully give at any time, from home or on the road, with your computer or mobile device. This service is solid, secure, and easy. Hospital Notifications: The hospitals do not always let us know who is in the hospital. If you have a loved one in the hospital, please contact the church office. Parish Fellowship The Parish Fellowship Ministry of St. John s provides dinners for families of St. John s members who have passed. These dinners are provided for a free will offering. Any funds over and above the cost of the food are kept in the Ministry account and used for needed supplies/equipment for the kitchen such as: new spatulas, ice buckets, bowls, towels and potholders, cutting boards, etc. We had a large number of dinners to serve from early November through December. We would like to start a second group of volunteers who would be available if the first group is not available or to rotate being on call for dinners. If you would be interested in being a part of a second group, please contact Sharon Colbeck ( ) or Elaine Brownfield ( ). We would also like to thank everyone who has helped serve these dinners and/or provided salads or desserts this past year. Your help is greatly appreciated! Cancer Companion Group: On Tuesday, January 22, St. Paul s Lutheran Church is starting their second Cancer Companion Group. Anyone in treatment, posttreatment, or loved ones and caretakers are welcome to attend. Cancer Companions are trained volunteers who support cancer families through Christian cancer support groups. They will meet every other Tuesday, through May 14, 2019, at St. Paul s Lutheran Church, 1 Bachrach Ct., at 6:30 p.m. in the Family Room. 11 LSA News During National Lutheran Schools Week, we will be hosting a Souper Bowl celebration on Thursday, January 31st from 5:30 7:00 PM. This event will coincide with the LSA High School girls basketball game. Each grade will have a soup for this activity. You are encouraged to have a theme for your serving area (approximately ½ a table). There are prizes! We would like to extend an invitation to the association churches, police department, sheriff department, fire department and anyone else who would like to join the fun. If you are interested in hosting a table, please contact Mr. Witt (jwitt@lsadecatur.net) at the LSA Elementary. Funds and donations raised through a free will offering will be given to NECF. Pro-Life Corner: If God places such high value on life all life (John 3:16) how can we possibly be less concerned? We do love others because He first loved us (1 John 4:19). We speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves (Proverbs 31:8) because when we had no voice, no standing, no defense, Jesus stepped in on our behalf. There is no way we can be less loving.
