2 Welcome to St. John s Lutheran Church Good morning and a blessed welcome to you! It truly is an honor to have you worshipping with us this morning and it is our prayer that you find great comfort and peace in Jesus Word of love, mercy, and forgiveness! If you are visiting with us today, please take one of the visitor gift bags from the visitors center. At St. John s we are pleased to offer a variety of service formats on Sunday morning. In our 8:30 a.m. traditional service we offer familiar hymns and rich, traditional worship forms in a meaningful and inspirational setting. Our 11:00 a.m. contemporary service includes the same message as our 8:30 a.m. service but in an informal style, enhanced with contemporary music. We encourage you to try both worship styles! Thank you for worshipping with us; we would love to have you join us again! (If you need any assistance or need a hearing aid device, please see one of the ushers.) The Lord s Supper Though we are eager for all to participate fully in the Lord s Supper, we do not want to compromise any portion of God s Word among us. Because Scripture states that the Lord s Supper can be taken to one s spiritual harm if not properly understood, we ask all visitors to refer to the following statement of belief regarding the Lord s Supper before communing: I am truly sorry for the sin in my life. I am struggling to die to my sin and to live in faith in Jesus. I am looking to Jesus to empower me to stop my sinning and to live a new life in Him. I believe when I receive the bread, I am receiving the true body of Christ, and when I receive the wine, I am receiving the true blood of Jesus. I believe that when I receive His true body and blood my sins are forgiven, I am given power over sin, death and the devil, and the gift of eternal life. My faith is completely in the words of Jesus. The Lord s Supper offers the two-fold gift of forgiveness and peace with God on the one hand, and unity and oneness among those who commune together on the other hand (Matt. 26:28; 1 Cor. 10:16 17). Those who receive the body and the blood of the Lord do so in terms of their relationship with God as well as with their fellow-communicants. Therefore, all baptized believers who understand and agree with the above Lutheran teaching of the Lord s Supper are welcome to attend. As always, we encourage you to speak with Pastor Ray with any questions or concerns. Thank you. The Wafer To receive the wafer from the lay minister, we suggest you hold out your hands, one on top of the other, so the wafer can be placed in your hand for you to put into your mouth. Common Cup To assist with the distribution of the wine via the common cup/chalice, we suggest you guide the tipping of the cup by placing your hand(s) on the bottom as you are being served. Individual Cup For those who prefer the individual cup, one is offered. Wait until the server is in front of you before drinking the cup. As you return to your seat, put the cup in the receptacle provided on the table against the brick wall. Disabled The pastor and lay minister will gladly commune in the front pews anyone unable to come to the communion rail. Let the pastor or an usher know before the service begins.

3 Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost November 18, :30 a.m. Our Vision: Grounded in Christ, Growing in Faith, Branching Out to Others PRE-SERVICE MUSIC AND A TIME FOR PRAYER Good morning and a blessed welcome to you! Thank you for worshiping with us; we would love to have you join us again! They will be collected during the offering. OPENING HYMN OF PRAISE Glory Be to God the Father LSB 506 INVOCATION OPENING SENTENCES CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION KYRIE (responses sung) THIS IS THE FEAST (sung) GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY LISTENING TO GOD SPEAK TO US THROUGH HIS WORD Daniel 12:1-3 1 At that time Michael, the archangel who stands guard over your nation, will arise. Then there will be a time of anguish greater than any since nations first came into existence. But at that time every one of your people whose name is written in the book will be rescued. 2 Many of those whose bodies lie dead and buried will rise up, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting disgrace. 3 Those who are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars forever. (NLT)

4 L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. LISTENING TO GOD SPEAK TO US THROUGH HIS WORD Hebrews 10: Under the old covenant, the priest stands and ministers before the altar day after day, offering the same sacrifices again and again, which can never take away sins. 12 But our High Priest offered himself to God as a single sacrifice for sins, good for all time. Then he sat down in the place of honor at God s right hand. 13 There he waits until his enemies are humbled and made a footstool under his feet. 14 For by that one offering he forever made perfect those who are being made holy. 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies that this is so. For he says, 16 This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds. 17 Then he says, I will never again remember their sins and lawless deeds. 18 And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices. 19 And so, dear brothers and sisters, we can boldly enter heaven s Most Holy Place because of the blood of Jesus. 20 By his death, Jesus opened a new and life-giving way through the curtain into the Most Holy Place. 21 And since we have a great High Priest who rules over God s house, 22 let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. 24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. (NLT) L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 13:1-13 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the thirteenth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. (sung) 1 As Jesus was leaving the Temple that day, one of his disciples said, Teacher, look at these magnificent buildings! Look at the impressive stones in the walls. 2 Jesus replied, Yes, look at these great buildings. But they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another! 3 Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across the valley from the Temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked him, 4 Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled? 5 Jesus replied,

5 Don t let anyone mislead you, 6 for many will come in my name, claiming, I am the Messiah. They will deceive many. 7 And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won t follow immediately. 8 Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world, as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. 9 When these things begin to happen, watch out! You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me. 10 For the Good News must first be preached to all nations. 11 But when you are arrested and stand trial, don t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 12 A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed. 13 And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. (NLT) L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. 11 Pro-Life Corner: When we see those suffering from disease or disability vulnerable, helpless, destined by many to assisted suicide or euthanasia we are compelled to speak and defend and help because it is the Christ thing to do. For Christ reveals a God who knows about suffering not just because He s God, but because He suffered. We have a message of a God present in suffering, at work in suffering, and accomplishing His purpose in suffering. Rev. Dr. James I.
