OPENING HYMN OF PRAISE Hark the Glad Sound LSB 349 INVOCATION OPENING SENTENCES CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY MINISTRY IN MUSIC Brenda Olsen Of the Father s Love Begotten LISTENING TO GOD SPEAK TO US THROUGH HIS WORD Malachi 3:1-7b 1 Look! I am sending my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. Then the Lord you are seeking will suddenly come to his Temple. The messenger of the covenant, whom you look for so eagerly, is surely coming, says the Lord of Heaven s Armies. 2 But who will be able to endure it when he comes? Who will be able to stand and face him when he appears? For he will be like a blazing fire that refines metal, or like a strong soap that bleaches clothes. 3 He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the Lord. 4 Then once more the Lord will accept the offerings brought to him by the people of

4 Judah and Jerusalem, as he did in the past. 5 At that time I will put you on trial. I am eager to witness against all sorcerers and adulterers and liars. I will speak against those who cheat employees of their wages, who oppress widows and orphans, or who deprive the foreigners living among you of justice, for these people do not fear me, says the Lord of Heaven s Armies. 6 I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed. 7 Ever since the days of your ancestors, you have scorned my decrees and failed to obey them. Now return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of Heaven s Armies. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. LISTENING TO GOD SPEAK TO US THROUGH HIS WORD Philippians 1: May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. 3 Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. 4 Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, 5 for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. 6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. 7 So it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News. 8 God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus. 9 I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. 10 For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ s return. 11 May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ for this will bring much glory and praise to God. (NLT) L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL Luke 3:1-20 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the third chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. (sung) 1 It was now the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius, the Roman emperor. Pontius Pilate was governor over Judea; Herod Antipas was ruler over Galilee; his brother Philip was ruler over Iturea and Traconitis; Lysanias was ruler over Abilene.

5 2 Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests. At this time a message from God came to John son of Zechariah, who was living in the wilderness. 3 Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven. 4 Isaiah had spoken of John when he said, He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, Prepare the way for the Lord s coming! Clear the road for him! 5 The valleys will be filled, and the mountains and hills made level. The curves will be straightened, and the rough places made smooth. 6 And then all people will see the salvation sent from God. 7 When the crowds came to John for baptism, he said, You brood of snakes! Who warned you to flee the coming wrath? 8 Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don t just say to each other, We re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham. That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones. 9 Even now the ax of God s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire. 10 The crowds asked, What should we do? 11 John replied, If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry. 12 Even corrupt tax collectors came to be baptized and asked, Teacher, what should we do? 13 He replied, Collect no more taxes than the government requires. 14 What should we do? asked some soldiers. John replied, Don t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay. 15 Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon, and they were eager to know whether John might be the Messiah. 16 John answered their questions by saying, I baptize you with water; but someone is coming soon who is greater than I am so much greater that I m not even worthy to be his slave and untie the straps of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 17 He is ready to separate the chaff from the wheat with his winnowing fork. Then he will clean up the threshing area, gathering the wheat into his barn but burning the chaff with never-ending fire. 18 John used many such warnings as he announced the Good News to the people. 19 John also publicly criticized Herod Antipas, the ruler of Galilee, for marrying Herodias, his brother s wife, and for many other wrongs he had done. 20 So Herod put John in prison, adding this sin to his many others. (NLT) L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. (sung) CHILDREN S MESSAGE Malinda Standerfer SERMON HYMN On Jordan s Bank the Baptist s Cry (Vv. 1-3, 5) LSB 344
