Blaine, father of Elizabeth Carolan Scott Malcak, son of Tony & Rose Malcak Joseph Patrick McDermott husband of Joanne Don McMillin, husband of Linda A NEW DAY DAWNS Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through the streets of Nineveh, scaring the citizens out of their wits. And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing "by their actions" how the people turn from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day dawns. Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, "The world in its present form is passing away" (1 Corinthians 7:31). He calls for a change of heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop carrying out their everyday activities, he urges them rather mysteriouslyto live "as though" they aren't doing the things they are doing. A new day has dawned. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, "The kingdom of God is at hand!" (Mark 1:14). Simon and Andrew abandon their nets and even their father and follow him. A new day had dawned. Everyone has to change when a new day dawns: the Ninevites, the Corinthians, the apostles, even Jesus! Didn't a new day dawn today for us as well? Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

January 22, 2012 Third Sunday of Ordinary Time Page Three Parish Announcement Capital Campaign for Saint Cletus Church Starting more than twelve years ago, Saint Cletus began discussing the needs for more meeting space, a large gathering area for the parish and overall improvements to the campus. After enlisting the services of various professional consultants, Saint Cletus was able to determine the structural needs of the campus and the desires of our parishioners. Comprised of more than 2,700 families and educating more than 425 children, our Parish is a vibrant, active and growing faith community. Indeed, the time has come to expand our horizons and begin Living our Faith, Building our Future. This week marks the beginning of Living our Faith, Building our Future, the capital campaign for Saint Cletus Parish and School. This extraordinary effort will help provide for current and future generations of parishioners by raising $5 million for the expansion of Saint Cletus and for the construction of a new multi-use Parish Center on the front of the existing education building. The new multi-use facility will serve everyone in the Parish by providing space for small - and large-group meetings, educational and social events, assemblies and presentations, as well as sport activities. The purpose of the campaign is to empower parishioners, Parish organizations, and friends of Saint Cletus to commit to our future and generously support the campaign. Enabled by a 3 to 5 year pledge period, Saint Cletus can plan to address the financial commitments of this extensive expansion and construction project. The success of this campaign depends on the participation and sacrifice of every member of our Parish. Already, more than 25 families have offered to serve as volunteers for Living our Faith, Building our Future. Their efforts are led by our Campaign Committee: Roman Szabelski, General Chairperson; Rob Luxem, Tim O Brien and Alice Williams, Major Gift Chairpersons; Anne Babirak and Peter Okkema, Special Gifts Chairpersons; and Bobbie Kallal, Campaign Administrator. Not all generations are blessed with the ability to make a powerful impact on their community and contribute to the success of future families and children. We have this unique opportunity to answer this call to service and embrace the challenging obligations of such an undertaking. Over the coming weeks and months, all Parish families will be asked to give a sacrifice of their time, talent and treasure. To ensure success, the campaign needs you to: Pray for its progress, Volunteer a few hours of your time, and Consider a sacrificial pledge when visited.

Page Four Third Sunday of Ordinary Time January 22, 2012 Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, JANUARY 22, 2012 THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Discipleship 101 How did you begin your journey as a follower of Jesus? Perhaps your parents saw to your baptism, although some make that decision later in life. Others had the advantage of a Catholic education or religious instruction that was parish-based. Many had special mentors in the faith: priests and sisters, grandparents or siblings, friends or teachers whose love and example made Christianity both credible and attractive. Consider how to give the gift of faith to children. You, too, can be a spiritual mentor! TODAY S READINGS: Jonah 3:1-5, 10; 1 Corinthians 7:29-31; Mark 1:14-20 (68) Jesus said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. MONDAY, JANUARY 23 Let grace and love unite During the Reformation the church headed into the chaos of conflicting views of how it should function. It was a dark time in church history that saw much division and persecution. Through all this darkness, however, the light of Christ was still present. Even though the church was divided, there still was hope. When we tear one another apart, we lose sight of what is truly important God s grace and love. Instead of creating divisions among ourselves, let s embrace a sense of community and compassion for one another to allow God s grace to shine through the darkness and enter our hearts. TODAY S READINGS: 2 Samuel 5: 1-7, 10; Mark 3:22-30 (317) If a kingdom is divided against itself, the kingdom cannot stand. TUESDAY, JANUARY 24 FEAST OF FRANCIS DE SALES, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH The great communicator In 1923 Pope Pius XI proclaimed Saint Francis de Sales a patron saint of writers and journalists because he made extensive use of flyers and books in his work as a spiritual director and defender of the Catholic faith. De Sales, who served as bishop of Geneva from 1602 to 1622, was also a polyglot, known as a clear and gracious stylist in French, Italian, and Latin. He even developed a form of sign language in order to teach a deaf man about God and thus is also the patron saint of the deaf. There are many ways to communicate the glory of God to the world. What is your particular gift and how will you use it to spread the Good News? TODAY S READINGS: 2 Samuel 6:12b-15, 17-19; Mark 3:31-35 (318) Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25 FEAST OF THE CONVERSION OF PAUL, APOSTLE You re never an impossible mission for God The details of the story vary, but whatever happened to Saint Paul on the road near Damascus was literally a turning point in his life. What was so incredible about Paul s turning around his conversion was not only the dramatic suddenness of it but also the fact that it happened in the midst of his persecution of Christians. He literally changed sides in mid-stride, switching his allegiances completely. Paul s conversion was a decisive statement on God s part that personal change is always possible. Have faith, and therefore hope, in that power today. TODAY S READINGS: Acts 22:3-16 or 9:1-22; Mark 16:15-18 (519) About noon a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. THURSDAY, JANUARY 26 Get fired up Known as the Light to the Gentiles, Saint Paul was a master with words and images, which continue to resonate 2,000 years after they were first written. Picture what happens when you stir a smoldering fire: Sparks snap and fly then a flame bursts from the center and a warm, reassuring blaze ignites from the ashes. Our eternal, internal flame never dies but merely dims through forgetfulness. It needs only to be revived by our memory. Suddenly we become aware of the inner resources we had forgotten or didn t know we had. Today when your spirit is flagging, conjure an imaginary stick and kindle into flame the presence of God that is within you. Make it a blazing fire, generating great quantities of heat and light. TODAY S READINGS: 2 Timothy 1:1-8 or Titus 1:1-5 (520); Mark 4:21-25 (320) I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have. FRIDAY, JANUARY 27 FEAST OF ANGELA MERICI, VIRGIN - Step out and step up Saint Angela Merici did two things that may seem small now but in her time (16th-century Italy) were huge: She organized a group of single laywomen to teach the uneducated girls of her town. In her time, very few women had any schooling, let alone became teachers, and the ones who did have some education were nuns, who, like other unmarried women, rarely went out on their own. Her community eventually became the Ursuline religious order. It s easy to ignore the fact that things people now take for granted came about because of someone who had a daring idea and the courage to carry it out. Their example can also serve to inspire you as well to take a bold step to do good in the world. TODAY S READINGS: 2 Samuel 11:1-4a, 5-10a, 13-17; Mark 4:26-34 (321) To what shall we compare the Kingdom of God? It is like a mustard seed that... is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants. SATURDAY, JANUARY 28 FEAST OF THOMAS AQUINAS, PRIEST, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Faith can be an open question Last November an Oxford-style debate on the proposition the world would be better off without religion ended with the audience voting that those who argued for the claim were the winners. Saint Thomas Aquinas would have been intrigued, and perhaps if he were on the opposed team the outcome might have been different, but he wouldn t have been afraid of the debate. The truth of our faith, Aquinas said, becomes a matter of ridicule among the [nonbelievers] if any Catholic, not gifted with the necessary scientific learning, presents as dogma what scientific scrutiny shows to be false. Catholics have an enviable intellectual tradition, and we honor the patron of schools, colleges, and students when we not only read and pray but study and learn and are not afraid to ask questions. TODAY S READINGS: 2 Samuel 12:1-7a, 10-17; Mark 4:35-41 (322) Who then is this whom even wind and sea obey? 2012 by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C. 5 January 22, 2012 Third Sunday of Ordinary Time Page Five MY LIFE'S JOURNEY OF FAITH STUART HEYES, DEACON CANDIDATE In my first article I explained my faith journey up to a meeting that Marlene and I had with Fr. Charles in At this meeting as we discussed my greater involvement in the compassionate care ministry and my willingness to do more, Marlene, half-jokingly suggested that he'd be asking me to consider being a deacon next. Apparently, Fr. Charles thought this was an idea worthy of further consideration and the following weekend, after Mass, told us that the Archdiocese Deacon Formation Program (now called the Institute for Diaconal Studies) had information sessions for those inquiring about the vocation of a deacon, the next being two weeks later on November 4, After some discussion Marlene and I decided we'd go with Fr. Charles to the Seminary in Mundelein to find out more. We went on a gorgeous fall day and for those of you who have not had the opportunity to visit let me say it is a most spiritual peaceful and beautiful place, well worth a visit, particularly if you get a guided tour as we did from someone who studied there. The information session was led by Fr. Dennis Stafford, the program's Spiritual Director who addressed the uncertainty, unease, feelings of unworthiness, academic concerns etc. that all of the 10 or so couples attending clearly had. HOW DO I DISCERN GOD'S CALL AND WHAT GOD WANTS OF ME? The question I had Do I want to be a deacon and what's involved? was the wrong question. The question to be answered was What does God want me to be? moreover how do I discern the answer and act upon it, after all God calls all of us to be active in our faith journeys. Discernment requires a heart ready to listen and respond to prayer and reflection and a head prepared and open to learn about the diaconate and then ponder which choice in my faith journey will bring the greatest joy to God, the world and Marlene and I? Surely the answer would be revealed as we learned more about the role and the kind of men (and wives) needed. This is a summary of the type of men (couples) sought, the role/ministries and an answer to Who is a Deacon? WHO IS A DEACON? John Paul II addressing the role of deacon said: Service is at the very heart of the diaconate to which you have been called: to be a servant of the mysteries of Christ and at the same time a servant of your brothers and sisters he further noted the diaconate is a visible sign of service to which all baptized are called, the deacon to is configured to Christ the servant. Deacons are men called by God to a ministry of service who, like priests, receive the sacrament of Holy Orders. However, the deacon may be married with children and lives in the lifestyle and secular world of the laity. The person of a deacon, his ministry, the personality traits and the criteria for acceptance into the formation program are covered in my next article!! Stuart Heyes Deacon Candidate

January 22, 2012 Third Sunday of Ordinary Time Page Seven It s invention time! The inventions have arrived and what clever minds we have in 5th grade! Please mark your calendars to view the inventions. What a great way to kick-off Catholic School s Week. The inventions will be available to view on Sunday, January 29, during our Open House in rooms 116 and 117. Also the student s reading projects are on display. Room 116 completed their Character Can projects. It s amazing how they transformed ordinary cans into a book character. Inside the cans, you can read all about their favorite character in the novel, The Magic Thief. Room 117 completed their projects for the novels they chose to read. They created dioramas, artifacts, Venn Diagrams, and letters of life lessons, just to name a few. The January poems, A Year in Review, are fantastic! They mastered the poetic device of using couplets. Please take a moment to read them and reminisce on activities from last year! Submitted by Joanne Clancy

Page Eight Third Sunday of Ordinary Time January 22, 2012 ROE VS WADE January 22 is the 39 th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade when the Supreme Court legalized abortion at any stage. Today 4400 babies are killed each day by abortion. That is one million six hundred and six thousand each year (1,606,000) an American Holocaust... In the message from Our Holy Father, he says: As you, your Bishops and great numbers of the faithful from throughout the United States gather at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception to pray for an end to the tragedy of abortion in your country, I assure you of my spiritual closeness and my sharing in your concern for the continuing holocaust of innocent human lives. This anniversary of the decision which effectively legalized abortion on demand in the United States is a call to people of good will to reflect seriously on the devastating consequences of that step. Now is the time for recommitment to the building of a culture of absolute respect for life from conception to natural death. You can join the Solemn Vigil Mass For Life brought to you LIVE from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC at 5:30 p.m. (cst) Sunday evening over the Eternal Word Television Network EWTN.Comcast Cable Channel 119.
