My Dear Friends The turn of a year is often a time for reflection, frequently joyful, occasionally less so. There is always as much a sense of an ending as a beginning (perhaps more?) as we gather round the television to watch the fireworks; or brave the cold, frosty night air to see them live ; or perhaps as we head to bed early, to avoid the noise and fuss, and endless repeats of such artistic masterpieces as Thingummyjigg or Hootenanny or any of the many and various celebrity packed offerings the broadcasters think we just can t do Thank you Thank you so much to the many kind and hardworking people who made Christmas so very special at St Anne s. We all enjoyed the beautiful Lessons and Carols service and appreciated the inspiring sermons and music over the festive season. The Church looked magnificent with the tree and all the decorative floral displays. The Sunday Club Nativity play was delightful and fun, and finally having such a packed Church, of parents and children, at the Christingle service was wonderful. Thank you all. I rather miss the sound of church bells at this time of year. Living in Tübingen, in Germany, every Sunday morning began with a dawn chorus (well I was a student!) of mis-tuned bells, the whole actually being inspiring and encouraging and certainly enough to make me think about church! The verse with which this letter begins is from Tennyson s incredibly long poem In Memoriam, written as a requiem following the death of his close friend Arthur Henry Hallum: in it, he explores spirituality, faith, experience and philosophy, in a poem running to 133 Cantos. 2 January: this year, the sentiments seem ever more appropriate, as our weather seems as confused and confusing as our national and international politics, our national church situation as worrying as ever. The Canto continues: Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. 2 Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the times; Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes, But ring the fuller minstrel in. Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good. Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace. Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be. By the time this lands in your hands, we will be into February; the Old Year well past, with all its joys and celebrations, worries and frustrations. How successfully have we managed to let go of the things we ought to, and move onto the new opportunities which rise before us each day? How well do we hold true to the faith which should inspire and sustain us as we fulfil our duties in this complex, beautiful frustrating world? Tennyson is not the only poet to have reflected on this. Burns (the Shakespeare of Scots ) puts it so: Then let us pray that come it may, (As come it will for a' that,) That Sense and Worth, o'er a' the earth, Shall bear the gree, an' a' that. For a' that, an' a' that, It's coming yet for a' that, That Man to Man, the world o'er, Shall brothers be for a' that. Amen to that! May God Bless You.

3 The Book Group The Book Group meets on Wednesday, 14 th February in The Robertson Room to discuss "My Secret Sister" by Helen Edwards and Jenny Lee Smith. Also please bring your favourite Cookery Book and share your reason! Laureen Lyall The Guild The Guild will meet on the following dates in February and March, venue and times as normal in the Church Hall, Kaimes Road at 7.30pm. February 13 th : A Project Meeting 'Breaking the Cycle of FGM' 27 th : Our speaker will be Margaret Boe and the subject 'Itch to Stitch' March 2 nd : World Day of Prayer - a service will be held in St Ninian's Church at 2.30pm 13 th : Wendy Sodergren will give a talk on 'Life in the Shetland Islands' 24 th : The Guild Coffee Morning will commence at 10.00am in Church Hall, Kaimes Road & further details can be found in the separate notification. Ethel Thomson FAN Club The Fan Club has two meetings in February. Friday, 9 th February: We welcome Michael Cleary who will talk about the New Borders Railway Friday, 23 rd February: Our speaker is Peter McDougall who will speak on The Past, Present and Future of Saughton Park. Both meetings will be preceded at 10.30am by tea/ coffee and home baking and if you have a special interest in these topics please feel free to visit us. Laureen Lyall Where are we now? Now that we have settled back into our new rooms you will find the "Lost Property Box" and "First Aid Box" in the alcove at the end of the kitchen. The Fresh Start donation box is on the Kaimes Hall stage. Heather Shanks Fresh Start Volunteers Have you got a couple of hours that you could spare on a Monday and/or Wednesday morning when you could help at Fresh Start? St Anne's have supported Fresh Start since it began in On a Monday morning several members of our Congregation have helped on a weekly basis to unpack and sort the bed linen, towels and curtains which have been donated during the previous week. Unfortunately due to ill health one or two have had to drop out and Fresh Start is looking for some "new blood" to take their place. You do not have to be there EVERY week. On the 4 th Wednesday of each month a St Anne's team make packs of bedding bundles and towel packs ready to be delivered to clients. So this is only a once a month commitment. PLEASE give some serious thought as to whether you could do this well worth while volunteering? It can be a lot of fun! Great conversations about films, theatre & music (and "who would want that on their bed!! ) If you would like more info please talk to Lyn, Carol or Heather. 6 Lusaka May/June 2018 In the November Newsletter and December Church magazine the World Issues Team issued an invitation to the congregation to become involved in the Twinning Project by considering a visit to Lusaka this year. Our friends in Lusaka have issued a formal invitation for a further exchange visit and are looking forward to welcoming two people from St Anne s this May/June. These exchange visits are a real opportunity to cement the relationship between the two congregations and anyone who has been involved in any way with previous visits either in Lusaka or Edinburgh will confirm the importance of face to face discussion on a variety of subjects both concerning faith or social issues. Time for responding to the invitation and preparing for the visit is now short; we really need to know before mid-february. So far we have one responder so would welcome another individual or alternatively a couple to get in touch. PLEASE, PLEASE contact either Martyn Quinn or Ann Doyle before mid-february if you would be prepared to be a representative of St Anne s in Lusaka this year. World Mission Council are running a seminar for those involved in exchange visits on 24 th February. This is an opportunity to share anxieties with folk who have already been on visits. Details can be obtained from any member of the World Issues Team or from the notice in the Kaimes Road Hall. Ann Doyle The Service is ecumenical and open to all A REMEMBERING SERVICE For all those who have suffered the loss of a child, from the beginning of pregnancy onwards, together with those who wish to come in love and support, to have time in quiet surroundings to fully recognise their loss and help with healing.
