1 June 2018 Presby-Notes My Dear Friends in Jesus Christ! I have been interested in the Holy Spirit nudge lately. Just what is that nudge? It may be an intuitive hunch, an impulse to do something, or a burden/thought that captivates you. Are all of those worthy of paying attention to in the long run? Maybe. I can think of some nudges that my wife, Cathy, had over our marriage and I listened. It paid off. One memorable nudge came on our 10 th wedding anniversary. We had made plans to have our sons watched by a member of the church while Cathy and I were planning to go into Peoria for dinner. However, plans changed because of a nudge Cathy had that we visit a wife whose husband was taken to the hospital in Springfield, Illinois. I knew of a nice restaurant in Springfield and made reservations and still allow time to visit the couple at the hospital. We drop our sons off at the church member s home and we make our way to Springfield and the hospital. We were planning on a half hour to visit and then have plenty of time to enjoy our anniversary dinner. Well things changed, again! As soon as we arrive at the hospital and find the spouse in the waiting room, we are immediately moved to a conference room. The wife, Cathy, and I are in the conference room when the doctor comes in to say that the lady s husband was not going to make It through the night. Oh, how glad I was to heed my wife s nudge! We were needed right at that moment. Two hours later, the husband just slept away and died a peaceful death. Cathy and I were comforting the wife and being there to talk, remember and pray. It was an anniversary we would never forget. We ended going to a Denny s later at about 2 AM and had some ice cream and cake! Holy Spirit nudges are something we should heed. We may not understand at the time, but the Spirit intercedes and makes things clear at the time we need clarity. That is what I believe is Jesus words to the disciples in John 14:26, when He teaches them that He is going to leave them but that they will not be left alone. Jesus would send a comforter, a helper, an advocate Who would make things known. Such knowledge comes through the nudges, through answers to prayer, through reading God s word, and even by the word or counsel a friend may offer. 2 Randy reported that the PNC has been meeting weekly and is working on several prospects. Communion was served to 84 on May 20th. Attendance in April: 4/1 54; 4/8 58; 4/15 42; 4/22 61; 4/29 54: in May: 5/6 58; 5/ Summer worship time will be 10:00a.m. beginning June 3 until September 9th. We are still in need of a nursery attendant, if anyone is interested or knows of someone who is interested contact the church office. We served 30 people at Warren s Table on May 1st. We serve again on July 3rd. First Presbyterian will be serving coffee on the church front lawn on Sunday June 24th for the Homestead Days car show on Fifth St. A date for church yard and parking lot clean up will be made in the near future, watch the bulletin for date. Proposed dates for Vacation Bible School is possibly July 1-3. Lynn Carothers has retired as a Sunday School teacher and we will need a replacement for the pre-kindergarten to third grade, anyone interested contact the Education and Youth Committee. 3 Presbyterian Women met Thursday, May 17th, 2018 in the church parlor. Verna Tubbs served as hostess. The tables were set with Spirea and baskets.. Bette Anne Thaut led the Bible Study - In Community with the Hope for the Future. The next get together will be Thursday, June 21st, at 11:30 a.m. at the Black Crow for our Birthday Luncheon. All women and guests are welcome. On June 5 from 7:00-8:30 pm Brian Daake is hosting a dog wash at the First Presbyterian Church in his running for Mr. Homesteader. All donations go to Blue Valley Behavioral Health with all of the money staying in Gage County. Thank you to those who helped with cleaning up around the outside of church: Don Harmon, Sam Rennick, Paul Hay, LuAnn Weaver, Greg Weaver, and Karen Schlueter. (pastor s column continued from page 1) The Season of Pentecost is a time when we reaffirm the ministry and power of the Holy Spirit working in our midst. Read Acts 2:1-21 for the story of Pentecost. That is the birth of the Christian Church. Ever since then, the Holy Spirit has been God s person and presence today. So, we are indeed in good company with God s Holy Spirit teaching and revealing what Jesus has been exemplifying in His ministry of love, teaching, and healing. Through out Pentecost, reclaim the Helper Whom Jesus has sent to continue His work in and through us, including that nudge.
