Traditionally celebrated on January 6, the twelfth day of Christmas, it is so important that in many countries, including the United States, it is transferred to the nearest Sunday. On Christmas day we celebrate the Word becoming flesh; on Epiphany we celebrate the news getting out the revelation of this amazing happening to the world. Epiphany comes to us from the East as its Greek name indicates. The word means "manifestation," "showing forth," or "revelation." In the Eastern Churches, this day is a triple celebration of the revealing of Christ to the Magi, to people gathered at the Jordan when Jesus was baptized by John, and to the wedding guests at Cana. While the Church in the West emphasizes the visit of the Magi to the infant Christ today, with the Baptism of the Lord commemorated tomorrow, a hint of the ancient origins of Epiphany survives in one of today's antiphons for Evening Prayer: "Three mysteries mark this holy day: today the star leads the Magi to the infant Christ; today water is changed into wine for the wedding feast; today Christ wills to be baptized by John in the river Jordan to bring us salvation." 4

5 Prayers & Occasions Our Deceased Pray for the eternal repose of Mary Alba who died last week at age 100, as well as for the consolation of her daughter Genevieve Fiorente and family and friends. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Our Sick Please pray for all our sick and for those who are in need of our prayer, especially Mary Pickering, Caeden Boyce, Nicholson Nicolas, Margo Bromfield, Matt Strazzula, Marie Deignan, Brother Bob Donovan, Stephanie Brown, and Alice Kane. Welcome to Saint Cecilia Parish We are pleased to welcome the following new members of our parish who have recently registered: Peter and Monica Campanella of Boston. If you have not previously registered with the parish, there are forms in the narthex for this purpose or you can register online at Weddings at Saint Cecilia Congratulations to Gabi Urso and Albert Crimaldi who were married here on December 29. May God bless the happy couple as they start this next phase of their lives together. Baptisms Today we celebrate baptism at the 9:30 a.m. liturgy for Cameron Reilly, son of Matt and Katie Boland; and Cora Elise, daughter of Matt and Katie Delvaux. At the 11:15 a.m. liturgy we celebrate baptism for Anderson John and Owen Hanson, sons of John Li and Courtney Gomez. The Christian community welcomes you with great joy, Cameron, Cora, Anderson, and Owen! For Those Who Are Grieving Pray for all who are grieving, particularly children who have lost parents and parents who have lost children to violence that they may know that God is with them and draw strength and hope from the Holy Family who experienced great loss and pain. For Ongoing Incarnation Pray for the grace to bring God into our world that we may allow the Word to dwell in our hearts, become enfleshed through our lives, and revealed in our words and deeds. For Reconciliation Pray for reconciliation within families that the Prince of Peace will heal old wounds, help us to recognize the gift that each person is, and lead us all into right relationship. For Persecuted Christians Pray for Christians who are unable to celebrate because of persecution and oppression that God will strengthen them, fill their hearts with hope, and help them to be signs of God's love and presence. For the People Who Inhabit the Holy Land Pray for for all who live in Bethlehem and the hill country of Judah; for Christians, Jews, and Muslims that God s spirit will open new pathways of peace and bring forth new hope for all who live in fear. For Peace in Troubled Parts of the World Pray for those who live amidst warfare and violence: that God will bring peace to their spirits and give them a new vision to help bring forth justice and peace in their land. Six O'Clock Mass Note The six o'clock Mass will resume tonight, Sunday, January 6, for the Epiphany of the Lord. Advent Giving Tree Thank You! Our Advent Giving Tree is so successful thanks to the generosity of parishioners at Saint Cecilia and amazing help from so many people. More than 1100 gifts were delivered on time for another banner year! It was only a few weeks ago that we met to make tags, tie ribbons, set up trees, sort clothing and sign greeting cards. The storage room was soon packed with gifts that were checked, organized and delivered. Your help makes this program work and I am glad that so many new volunteers joined the team this year. Extra special thanks to Chris, Jenn, Julie and Christine DesAutels who help coordinate the entire program. Next year we're shooting for 1500 gifts! Thanks everyone! Ann Faldetta 5

6 National Migration Week EPIPHANY DOOR BLESSING 20 + C + M + B + 19 It is an Epiphany custom to inscribe with chalk the initials of the Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, along with the numerals of the new year, over the main doorway of your house or apartment. Traditionally, the letters and numbers are inscribed in this format: 20 + C + M + B In addition to the letters being the initials of the traditional names of the three Magi, they also abbreviate the Latin words Christus mansionem benedicat, or May Christ bless the house. At Saint Cecilia, we pray that we will be a welcoming presence for all who pass through our doors; we pray that we will welcome everyone without judgment or prejudice. You are invited to take home a piece of blessed chalk with you today and say a prayer of blessing at your door. This is one option: Loving God, We pray through the intercession of the Magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, that you help us create a home of peace and love. Give to those who pass through the doorways of this house, an awareness of your presence within their hearts. Bless our comings and our goings. Watch over us and over all our guests; when we leave, bless our journeys and bring us safely home. We ask this through Jesus, your Son and our Lord. Amen In the United States, the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord marks the beginning of National Migration Week. The Magi were on the move, pilgrims following a star; and in the face of Herod's fury, Joseph, Mary, and Jesus would become refugees, fleeing into Egypt. Christians everywhere are called to extend a helping hand to those who are suffering, alone, and on the verge of despair. This year's theme for National Migration Week is "Building Communities of Welcome." Migrants and particularly the most vulnerable migrants: children, the undocumented, refugees, and victims of human trafficking, remain limited and their ability to live out their lives in its fullness severely restricted. Often at risk of violence or exploitation these vulnerable populations need to be provided the support needed so that they can thrive. Regardless of where we are and where we came from, we remain part of the human family and are called to live in solidarity with one another. Pray that the Lord will soften our hearts and help us to bring the light of Christ to these populations, and help to bring them from the margins of society to its center. Powr Program Info Session Please join us Tuesday January 22 in the Parish Hall for a presentation by Grace Gaskill from Catholic Charities on the People Organized to Welcome Refugees (POWR) program. The POWR program was started in 2010 with the goal of recruiting parishes and volunteers to help refugees adjust to transitioning to the US. If you are interested in attending this presentation, please sign up by January 14. For more information or to register please Anthony Ishak at anthonymishak@gmail.com/ 6 We are seeking our next Director of Music We are starting the search for our permanent Director of Music at Saint Cecilia. The Director of Music is responsible for nurturing the prayer life of the community through music, particularly in coordinating music for liturgical celebrations, and fostering the growth of our music ministry. Through utilizing a variety of musical styles, the Director of Music helps the parish broaden its understanding of and appreciation for the role music can play in deepening our relationship to God. Should you or anyone you know be interested please send resumes to Mary Kaye at mkaye@ stceciliaboston.org.

7 Spiritual Palliative Care January 16 Parish Hall 6:30-8:30 p.m. Please join the Palliative Care and Advance Care Planning team in a discussion led by our fellow parishioner and Chaplain, Matt Jacobson. Matt will explore the spiritual and emotional needs that may come up for those living with serious illness. Together we will consider various compassionate responses to suffering. There will be plenty of opportunity for shared reflection if you would like to attend. All are welcome. We are also planning to repeat some of our sessions in 2019/2020. The winter/spring calendar will include: February 5th (Overview of Palliative Care); April 23 (Workshop on Making and Communicating Your Serious Illness Care Choices); and May 21 (Topic TBD). If you re interested in participating in any of these sessions, please complete the sign-up sheets after Mass or contact Amy Russo at aerusso2015@gmail.com. Wisdom and Mature Spirituality Group January 20 10:00 Meet in the Parish Hall The Wisdom and Mature Spirituality Group is currently reading the book, Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Life by Richard Rohr. At our meeting in January, we will discuss Chapter 9, which is about the spiritual gifts of aging. Rohr tells us, In the second half of life, we can give our energy to making even the painful parts and the formally excluded parts belong to the now unified field - especially people who are different and those who have never had a chance. If you have forgiven yourself for being imperfect and falling, you can now do it for just about everybody else. If you are in the second half of life and are interested in spiritual growth, please join us as we start the new year. We welcome new members; we meet in the parish hall at 10 am. Christmas Cards for Saint Cecilia Cares At the beginning of the Christmas season the Saint Cecilia CARES ministry team gives sets of holiday cards to all participants. While many stores are having 50% off sales, please consider picking up a box of cards for us to use next year. Given that many of those the CARES team visits are experiencing poverty or have mobility issues, these cards are greatly appreciated. There will be a bin in the narthex for this purpose. 46TH Annual MLK, jr. memorial breakfast - Last call Monday, January 21 I 7:45 a.m. Boston Convention & Exhibition Center The 46th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Breakfast to commemorate the noble legacy of the Rev. 12 NOTICE THE SIMILARITIES? In his essay, "Cauchetier's Christmas Card: Adoration of the Magi," American cinematographer John Bailey writes, "Images of the Magi first appeared in Christian art in the fourth century as catacomb paintings and on sarcophagi reliefs. They were at first represented in Eastern dress: distant visitors come to give tribute to the new king of the West. The visit of the Three Kings quickly became a central motif in Christian iconography, foretelling the triumph of this new religion. [Here] is this much-loved, oft-reproduced sculpture from Autun, of the Sleeping Magi. Such an intensely horizontal image is rare in Romanesque iconography and its lateral line is even more focused by the wing and pointed hand of the angel. The sweeping incisions defining the blanket also contribute to the strong left to right movement. Whether the angel is waking the sleeping kings to tell them to follow the star above them to the stable or to warn them on their return home not to report back to King Herod has long been debated by scholars. Any guesses?" The Magi look charmingly cozy in their communal bed; it was common practice for travelers to share beds in the Middle Ages. (Leaving one's crown on in bed was probably not quite so common.) The top photograph shows the origin of the other two works of art. 12th-century French Romanesque sculptor, Gislebertus, carved the top image out of stone for one of the four major capitals at Autun Cathedral in Burgundy. Left above is a cut paper design by Benedictine Brother Martin Erspamer, a monk of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in St. Meinrad, Indiana who is inspired by stone carvings in Romanesque churches in France and Spain, that, in turn, borrow from Byzantine iconography. Just beneath it on the left is a painting by the Chinese artist, He Qi, who has committed himself to the creation of modern Chinese Christian art since Dr. He Qi was the first among Mainland Chinese to earn Ph.D. in religious art after the Cultural Revolution. THE WORK OF CHRISTMAS Howard Thurman When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flocks, the work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among the people, to make music in the heart. 12
