1 TRINITY TRANSFORMER A publication of Trinity United Methodist Church Our Mission: To Be Lovingly Obedient To Christ Vol. 7 No. 10 October 2016 Dear Child of God, Our Holy Spirit class will conclude at the end of this morning. Let me tell you folks, it has been an excellent class! It has helped us to think of the Holy Spirit in new ways and definitely more personal than usual. When people talk about the Holy Spirit or even mention the Holy Spirit, others say, We know that already. Yes, sometimes we think we know how the Holy Spirit works and has its being in us or how the Holy Spirit moves, and all of a sudden we have goose bumps. In the book we are reading for the class, Fresh Air, the Holy Spirit does not give you goose bumps. Do we really understand the Holy Spirit? Here is another questions for us to ponder: Is your community a temple, a holy of holies, filled in every nook and cranny by the Holy Spirit? In 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 it says, Do you not know that you are God s temple and that God s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God s temple, God will destroy that person. For God s temple is holy, and you are that temple. This means that each and every one of us is a temple and we embody the Holy Spirit. Everyone, not one person is left out or put out. We are all God s temple filled with the Holy Spirit. The Hebrew word ruach means spirit-breath, a gift from God Almighty. Spirit-breath is given to everyone. There is a reason we gather every Sunday so we may all share in the Spirit-breath of God. Every Sunday, each of us comes with our pain. A pain that may have stifled us or a pain that is chronic or a pain we just have before us. We come to church because we value every Spiritbreath. When we give our praise in worship and song, we then give praise to the God who gives the Spirit-breath. For praising God and recognizing the Holy Spirit in each of us, helps us to identify with each other and to know we truly are not alone in our pain. It is through praise and prayer that we our truly brothers and sisters in Christ and we have the Holy Spirit which makes us one in Christ. We can keep loving, caring, uplifting and share in the Holy Spirit what God wants for our lives. Know that you are not alone, for God walks with you always. Thanks be to God for this wonderful news in the Holy Spirit that is a gift from God through Jesus Christ his son. In Jesus name, Pastor Tweedy Rev. 3 It is hard to believe but the music department is already planning for Advent. You have to be prepared way before the time. The Bells have been practicing Christmas music since April. And as we get closer to Advent, I will be talking a little about how all the choirs prepare for the holidays and why we don t sing Christmas Carols until Christmas. The Chancel Choir is light in members. We have quite the soprano section, but only 2 altos (Thank you Deltrina), and 7 Tenors and Basses. We do get 3 altos in October and November, thank you winter family. We would love to have you join us. As I said, the Bells are busily practicing for Christmas. We have four December performance dates outside of church. The annual Christmas Concert will be December 17 th and 18 th at 4 PM. The Bells continue to play in church every second Sunday. I was asked to name all the Bell Choir players, so here they are starting with the high bells: Leonard Fuchs, Sarah Akins, Lisa Rammelt, Bob Rammelt, Joanna Pyott, Stephanie Fazz (our newest member, but her husband took a job in Prescott ), Jeff Irick, Laurie Lineberry, Helen Franklin, Don McCravy, Katie Fuchs, and TJ Thorp. Our substitutes are Shelley Bernstein, Stefanie Jacobs, and Pamela Young-Walker. We also have a winter family sub, Nancy King. What an awesome group of ringers!! We really are in need of some folks to fill in the special s spot. If you have a gift or talent you would like to share on any given Sunday, please see Karen. Karen Conde, Music Director A song will outlive all sermons in the memory. Henry Giles Please use caution... Recently the City of Yuma removed the traffic light at the corner of 28 th Street and 8 th Avenue. This means that the traffic on 8 th Avenue flows continuously from 24 th Street to 32 nd Street. The intersection at 8 th Avenue and Catalina Drive (next to the church) is the scene of many accidents, and the removal of the light may increase the possibility of an accident. Please use care when driving around the church Rock & Roll Paint-A- Thon In conjunction with the City of Yuma, we are planning to paint a home in the Palmcroft neighborhood. There will be two work days. The first for preparing the home for painting and the second for the actual painting. We are looking for volunteers who are able to assist. Paint and supplies will be provided. If you are able to help, please see a member of the Transformation Team who will be at a table in Morris Hall during our Fellowship Time after Church on October 9 th. Preparation Day Saturday, October 15 th 1:30 to 4:00 PM Painting Day Saturday, October 22 nd 8:00 AM to Noon Your Vote IS Your Voice! Be Informed Meet your local candidates Saturday, October 8th - 1:00 PM St. John Neuman Church Center E. 40 th Street - Yuma

4 Thanks to members of the United Methodist Men who hosted our Coffee Time in August and the Education Team who hosted in September. The Witness Team will be our host for the month of October, and the Outreach Team will host in November. [Just a reminder the United Methodist Women will host in December and the Administrative Council will have January 2017.] 2017 Relay for Life Team Trinity Team Trinity is already getting started for the 2017 Relay Year. We have had our first meeting and are busily trying to figure out how to top our extremely successful 2016-year, which doesn t involve going purple. Team Trinity was the number one team in the Yuma area, and we would very much like to do that again, but we need your help. Our kick-off will be during Birthday Sunday in October. The team will provide a very lovely purple cake. We will be asking everyone to give $1 for every year you have attended Trinity, not a member of Trinity, but years attending. For some of us, it is substantial (I have gone to Trinity since I was 12.) We will also be handing out water bottles for you to collect dimes. A 20oz water bottle will hold about $100. Thank you to Swire Coca-Cola Distributors for supplying our water bottles. We will be collecting the bottles at the end of April, right before the Relay. Some of the other ideas are $1,000 matching donations, a cake-decorating contest with a Cakewalk following the Potato Bar Sunday, a neighborhood walk around the block event. If any of you have some ideas, please let anyone on the team know. Once again, I want to thank everyone at Trinity for supporting our efforts for Relay for Life. Also, anyone, I mean anyone can be on the team!! Our next meeting is October 4 at 5pm in the Music Room. Life changes on a dime and cancer will affect your life sometime. In some way it WILL. - Alan Blassberg October 11 th 14 th I am looking for volunteers to help out at the Palmcroft Book Fair October 11-14, I can schedule you for 2 hours at a time, or more if you want. The volunteers just help the kids find books, or write down their wishes, and just help with crowd control. The Book Fair will be open from 9am 4pm. I will be taking sign ups at church, but if you don t see me to sign up, just me at conde7140@roadrunner.com. We can do no great things. We can only do small things with great love. Mother Theresa Karen Conde, Lay Leader If you haven t heard already, the church is getting ready to do a new pictorial directory. The dates are January 31- February 4, Marilyn Young and Karen Conde are the co-chairs of this event. We will be setting up appointments after Christmas. You will be hearing much more about the times and dates in December. In the mean time, you will be seeing Marilyn and Karen out and about taking pictures of all the activities that go on at Trinity. In addition to the portraits that are in the directory, there are activity pages. So if you have something special coming up, please get with Marilyn and Karen so we can take photos. Take more pictures, storage is unlimited, memories are fleeting, and life is short.

Would he recognize Methodism today? Pastor Katie Fuchs and AnnaMarie Sollars will facilitate a six week excursion into those very subjects. This is the third time this small group has been offered. And to keep it fresh and relevant new materials will be utilized (Adam Hamilton s Revival) as well as previously used materials (United Methodist 101 produced by UMCOM and Major United Methodist Beliefs by Mack Stokes). 9 HOW TO REACH NEW PEOPLE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY OCTOBER 28 TH AND 29 TH led by Jim Griffith How will you infuse your church and the community that surrounds it? Those who attended Annual Conference last year, we delighted to hear a presentation by Jim Griffith on how we might reach out to new people. Jim began his ministry by starting new churches for the purpose of reaching new people, including five new churches in Florida, North Carolina, and Denver. Since then, he and his network of associates have assessed over nineteen hundred church planting candidates, trained thousands of planters, and coached hundreds of new churches. Leveraging that experience, Griffith Coaching focuses on training and coaching churches of all ages in their efforts to reach the mission field around them. Jim lives in Orlando, Florida and is married to Kim Griffith, a United Methodist Minister. We now have an opportunity to expand this work and would invite you to join us to continue the dialogue with Jim and others in an interactive session. Here in Yuma we will participate in the presentation portion of the workshop via livestream video, and we will have Jim s wife, Kim Griffith on-site to facilitate our discussions. The workshop times will be on Friday from 5:30 to 9:00 PM and Saturday 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The workshop will be held here at Trinity and we will be hosting teams from First, Fort Yuma, Gila Mountain and Somerton United Methodist Churches. There is no cost to workshop participants, but we would ask for you to let us know you will be attending by calling Bob in the Church Office at CareNotes The publications imprint of ABBEY PRESS PUBLICATIONS, was begun in With the creation of a series of small booklets known as "CareNotes," ABBEY PRESS PUBLICATIONS began offering its series of "people-helping booklets" worldwide. Since that date, more than 400 individual publications have been produced, and sales worldwide now exceed 60 million copies. CareNotes were conceived with two fundamental beliefs in mind: 1. The right words at the right time make all the difference in the world to people who are hurting 2. Less can be more-when people are dealing with intensely emotional issues. CareNotes booklets can be found in the Narthex and the Trinity Office titles vary so please check out both. Here are the newest titles Enriching Your Life Through Gratitude Moving Through the Darkness of Grief Living Life After a Loved One Dies Where Is God In My Suffering? 10 another ticket. Rose and Emilie are now in Florida with Rose s family. Now, Rose begins the next step in becoming a US citizen and tries to raise money for Emilie s father to join them in Florida. Rose was born and raised in Haiti. Her parents were killed in the 2010 Haitian earthquake. At age 21 she and her boyfriend set out to make a better life than was available in the abject poverty of Haiti and its corrupt government. Rose has family in Florida and they have agreed to sponsor her. She and her boyfriend traveled 8 months from Haiti through the jungles of Brazil to the Mexico/California border. They did not have lots of money. She and her boyfriend, a computer technician raised money along the way working at odd jobs. The travel is by foot unless they have enough money for train, boat or short flight. To cross at the various borders along the way, they had to deal with mercenaries; Rose s boyfriend could not always keep her safe-she was physically and sexually abused; they had to keep themselves safe from the animals in the Brazilian jungle. Oh, by the way, she found out she was pregnant shortly after they began their journey. Even with all the dangers she has been through, when asked if it was worth it she replies in French, it is so much better here than in Haiti. Rose was processed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Calexico. The plan was always to turn herself in at the US Border and start the process to become a US citizen. Along the way, she and her boyfriend got separated. Her support by family in Florida was verified by U.S. Border Patrol which afforded her legal parole papers to travel in the U.S. to Florida and follow-up with immigration court as another step in the process to becoming a US citizen. Her family in Florida purchased a bus ticket for her from Calexico to Florida. As they left San Diego, Rose s water broke, her daughter was ready to enter into the world. Yuma was the closest hospital. Emilie Sara was born in the USA at Yuma Regional Medical Center on September 10, Yuma County Interfaith Refugee Hospitality Ministry is only known to those who have supported this ministry. Our goal is to keep those seeking peace and fullness of life in the USA safe and not to jeopardize our relationship with U.S. Customs and Protection at the Yuma Border Sector. God continues to place people who believe all people belong to God in strategic places at the divine appointed time to be a conduit to God s love. This was provided for Rose; her nurse was connected to one of the faith communities who support this ministry. That nurse s phone call mobilized volunteers who provided clothes, food, car seat and follow-up pediatric care for Emilie. Volunteers transported Rose and Emilie to the church that provides the space used for emergency shelter; volunteers provided translation assistance to connect Rose to her family in Florida and assisted Rose in obtaining This is just one of the many stories of the hundreds of people the Yuma County Interfaith Refugee Hospitality Ministry has served. Volunteers have met families; women; women and children; men and children; from Romania and Central America and now from Haiti. Volunteers from several faith communities responded to women and children being dropped off in the Walmart parking lot almost 3 years ago. Yuma County Interfaith Refugee Hospitality Ministry has imitated the ways of Jesus to the US Customs Yuma Border sector and now they do more than just drop people off to our hospitality site. Volunteers continue to support this ministry because it is one way to follow the ways of Jesus and show the love of God. The faith communities represented are sensing the move of the Holy Spirit on this ministry. We are asking for faith communities to join with us in some way. Maybe you can monthly drop off all the groceries on the grocery list or maybe monthly you can provide a few of the items on the grocery list. Maybe, you can transport people to the bus station at 2am or maybe you can take someone to pick up their money from Western Union and then take them to get their bus ticket. Maybe you can call the volunteer listed on the grocery list and ask her, what s needed today? Be Blessed and BE A Blessing Rev.
