1 A monthly publication of Trinity United Methodist Church Our Mission: To Be Lovingly Obedient To Christ Vol. 3 No. 05 May 2012 Family of God, Recently, I posted something on face book about walking; and I wanted to write about it in more depth. The question I posted was, How do you walk? Do you have a bounce in your step or do you walk straight and tall or maybe your walk is fast and wavy. Think for a moment about how you walk and, from far off, can your friends or family tell if it is you coming or walking away? When I am walking early in the morning, it is still dark but I can tell who is walking towards me and walking in front of me because of their style of walk. For instance, there are two ladies I have become friends with; and when I see them in a distance, I know who they are and even if its just one of them walking, I know who it is. There is a lady who jogs at the same time I am walking, and I can see her from far off and know who it is. The reason I ask this question is because the other day while I was walking and thinking about this, I was wondering if people can tell if you are a Christian by the way you walk. In the New Testament, people would see Jesus far off and they would know it is the Lord. We are told in Scripture that people would see him coming and they would begin to prepare themselves to be in his presence. Even the blind man who was sitting at the gate of the city heard he was walking by and called out to him, and Jesus healed him. How do people know that we walk with Jesus every day? How do they know that we are believers? Is it in the way we walk that people can tell if we believe in the Lord or not? I know most of us don t always walk around shouting Praise God or Believe in Jesus, but it is by the way you treat each other on that walk. The one lady I mentioned earlier, says a cheery Good Morning to all she passes by. She may not be in the best of feelings or in the best of health, but she always says, Good Morning and people respond to her and they respect her. This is what the Lord says: Stop at the crossroads and look around. Ask for the old, godly way, and walk in it. Travel its path, and you will find rest for your souls. (Jeremiah 6:16a) The right path for living is the old godly way and has been marked out by God. People have tried all kinds of ways to please God (Micah 6:6, 7); but God has made God s wishes clear: God wants the people to do what is right, to love mercy, and walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8). In your efforts to please God, examine these areas on a regular basis. As you walk daily with God, know that you definitely are not alone. If we follow God s way, and not our own, then we will definitely show people in our daily walk that we believe in the Risen Christ. May you all, as (Navajos) Dine say: Walk in Beauty. 3 A Word of Thanks... Praise the Lord!...From the Naomi House We are currently blessed with 31 children! Your gift of $ was absolutely a direct answer to prayer and one of the many ways God faithfully meets our every need! As the number of children increases, so does our number of staff. Our newest staff member is Robert Lindgren. He has been such a blessing. He cooks, cleans and is quite the handyman. Besides that, and most importantly, he loves the Lord with all of his heart and is delightful to work with. His addition to the Naomi Family brings our staff up to 7. And believe it or not... we still need more. We also need more room! We have outgrown our property, according to the State and County and cannot build any more structures because of a law pertaining to septic tanks. The good news is... the land next door is for sale and would be perfect! It even has its own well! Please keep our growing needs in prayer. We believe that the Lord will guide us into His perfect will and that just as He always has... He will meet our every need!! Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. A new list is available on the bulletin board in Morris Hall or ask Marion Perry for a copy. In most cases, the UPC code is what is needed from the label. Try not to damage that when removing it. 4 O Spirit of the Living God Text-Henry H. Tweedy Music-Ralph V. Williams Henry Hallam Tweedy ( ) hailed from the northeast, born in Binghamton, N.Y. He was granted degrees from Phillips Andover Academy, Yale University, Union Theological Seminary and the University of Berlin. A Congregational pastor, he served churches in New York and Connecticut, and later taught practical theology from at Yale Divinity School. In addition to editing a hymnal, Tweedy published a practical volume, The Minister and His Hymnal, and won several hymn contests sponsored by the Homiletic Review and the Hymn Society of America. The United Methodist Hymnal contains one of Tweedy s three main hymn texts in use today, the other two being Eternal God, Whose Power Upholds (1928), winner of the Hymn Society of America s missionary hymn competition, and O Gracious Father of Mankind (1925). Methodist hymnologist Guy McCutchan quotes Tweedy, who said he composed O Spirit of the Living God because some of the old Pentecostal hymns were to me unsatisfactory, and I was eager to interpret the symbolism of the story in Acts in a way that modern men could understand and sincerely mean. The hymn was first published in the Methodist Hymnal (1935) after Halford E. Luccock, the author s friend, sent it to the hymnal committee. The text is an exposition of Acts 2, a passage focused on Pentecost. Stanza one is a petition for light and fire, primary images of the Spirit at Pentecost, to descend upon the church once more. The petitions continue as the author asks the Spirit to make [the church] truly thine, Fill [the church] with love and joy and power, with righteousness and peace. Stanza two begins with an imperative verb, Blow, wind of God! a request for wisdom, until our minds are free from mists of error. The second half of the hymn petitions the Spirit to Burn, winged fire! a request for inspiration of lips with flaming love and zeal, to preach.... Stanza three continues with imperative petitions: Teach us to utter living words of truth a request for insight that will lead to an ecumenical vision when all shall blend their creeds in one, and earth shall form one family.... The final stanza answers the question, So what? The composer makes these petitions so that we know the power of Christ who came this world to save.... If these petitions are fulfilled, true holiness will make thy children whole and we will be perfected by thee... [to] reach creation s glorious goal! Interestingly, the language of Christian perfection indicates a Wesleyan direction for the culmination of the hymn. The Rev. Carlton Young, editor the UM Hymnal, notes: This is one of a few social gospel hymns written in the 1930s that has survived. It follows in the mold established by Baptist theologian Walter Rauschenbusch ( ) and expressed so beautifully in hymns like Congregationalist Washington Gladden s O Master Let me Walk with Thee (1879) and the Methodist Frank Mason North s Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life (1903). One additional note Tweedy is credited with a quotation that often appears in association with his name: Fear is the father of courage and the mother of safety. Excerpt from UMR Columnist, C.
