1 T R I N I T Y TRANSFORMER A publication of Trinity United Methodist Church Our Mission: To Be Lovingly Obedient To Christ Vol. 9 No. 10 October 2018 When my niece died, my brother kept telling me the story of how she died (car accident). At the viewing, hundreds appeared to tell the stories of how they knew Jesica and what she meant to them, filling more gaps in Jesica s story for her family. The daughter who never had any money kept paying for lunch or drinks or stuff for others. The daughter who kept losing things was actually giving them to friends who liked them or needed them more than she did. Where there had been conflict between parents and daughter, the parents now knew their daughter was living out her faith with a giving spirit, never defending herself or explaining what she was doing. She s been gone 16 years now, and the stories are still told. Telling the stories and speaking the name of a loved one who has died is a powerful thing. It keeps those people and events alive in our memory. But it starts with families who gather and tell stories, so they can be handed down from generation to generation and shared with friends. In light of the power of these stories, let me ask a question: Is the Trinity Family gathering and sharing stories? Do we tell people outside the family about what is happening within our family? Do the events that happen at Trinity UMC have the same power for us as those family stories we share with friends? Trinity UMC has Sunday School rooms going unused and pews that no one sits in. Off hand, it strikes me that we are not doing a good job of telling our stories in a way that matters to other people. If we told our stories of joy and heartache in a way that makes them relevant, we wouldn t have empty rooms and pews. Are we telling stories of hope and transformation? Are we telling stories of a Savior and how that Savior s family that have made a difference in our life? Are the things that happen at church as noteworthy as the family gathering you tell your friends about? If not, why are you here? As Ann Weems asks: Do we or do we not believe the news is good? If we believe, then why aren t we singing? Why aren t we shouting? Why aren t we dancing? It is time and beyond time for the people of Trinity to start telling our story: a story of God s faithfulness, a story of God s love, a story of God s faithful people in building this church, a story of God s grieving but faithful people in establishing a handbell choir, a story of God s people welcoming, and later burying, a homeless man. Share the good news Trinity! Transform the world through Word and Deed. It is not enough to be in mission to others, or to just pray for them. We must start telling our stories so that the lonely, the lost, the grieving, the oppressed, the hurting find a place, a people, and a God that can transform lives. 6 The choirs are back in session! And we are so excited that we had 4 new voices at our first Chancel Choir practice. Thanks to Deb, Brad, Cris, and Carolyn! Welcome!! As you have noticed we have added Psalters into our service on Sundays. You, the congregation, have been doing a great job of singing the Psalters. Keep up the good work! We are learning new songs every Sunday and Karen certainly appreciates you singing with gusto! The bells are busy practicing for Christmas, we are always practicing for Christmas. We had to say a Fond Farewell to Jeff! He will be missed. We are also sad to say good-bye to Kerry Allen (McNierney) as she has taken on a new job that has more responsibilities. She is just taking a year off, she will be back! Praise the Lord, we have 2 folks that have stepped in to help in those spots. Shelley Bernstein, who has subbed and played with us before, and Cris Ayala who is new to Yuma, but not to handbells. YEAH Team!! Karen Conde, Music Director Financial Update So that you are more aware of the finances of the Church throughout the year, the following is a summary of our income and expenses through August 31, You can see that we have spent more money than we have taken in, and that there were some expenses that were not paid. Income Received through 8/31/ $147, Expenses Paid through 8/31/ $169, Expenses exceed Income... $22, Unpaid Bills... $6, Total Shortage... $28, If you have any questions you may speak with a member of our Finance Team: Johnna Duppstadt or Robert Hawk. Detailed financial reports are available to our members from the Church Office. Just a reminder that our Bishop, Robert Hoshibata, is calling us together on Saturday, January 12 th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This gathering of lay and clergy members in this area will be held at Gila Mountain United Methodist Church, N. Frontage Rd., Yuma. Bishop Hoshibata writes: In order to better understand and prayerfully share our thoughts for our Church, I am inviting you to participate in a Holy Huddle on the Future of The United Methodist Church. The Holy Huddles will be helpful to us as we watch what happens in advance of and on the floor of General Conference. The Holy Huddle will be for both laity and clergy together. The Holy Huddles are open to all persons who want to come and participate in Christian conversations about the future of our church. We will be hearing some background material to set the stage for our Huddles, but much of our time will be spent in conversation around tables, sharing our thoughts with one another. There will also be time for questions from individuals. All of this will be bathed in a prayerful, worshipful spirit and will include holy communion as the sacramental act which unifies us. Some may ask why so much time is being devoted to these Holy Huddles. I believe we are in a very crucial moment in the history of our United Methodist Church and its predecessor bodies. Although we are not all able to vote on what plan is ultimately adopted by General Conference, we do have the responsibility to be aware of the implications of the plans. It is a privilege to pray and share around tables in Christ-like conversation. We join in expectation that our United Methodist Church will face the future united in hope for our future. I anticipate that we will be better prepared to continue our excellent ministries because we have these moments of Holy Huddle to inform and inspire us, centering us in the hope of Jesus Christ even as we undergo change.
7 Whether you are for or against Social Media, it is the most common way to get information in the 21st Century. Through Facebook, Instagram, Websites, it is how most folks are getting news and what s happening in the community. Trinity has been given a grant through the UMC Communications. This grant will help enhance our Facebook page. 86% of Americans are on Facebook daily. (I got that statistic from the webinar from UMC.) They also stated that Facebook is today s Yellow Pages. So, if we can reach more people by having a better presence on Facebook, then we should do it. Starting Monday, September 17, there will be new and exciting posts on Trinity s page. If you have not gone to Trinity s page and joined, then please do it. We will be posting what s going on at Trinity, Sunday sermon s, and Bible verses to start your day. We are also going to set up an Instagram page, as soon as that is set-up, you will be notified. Technology is not all negative, you can get positive and enlightening information from the Internet. Just to let you know, over 500 churches are involved in this Grant from UMC Communications. See you on Facebook! Worship is the face of Trinity and what it takes to put Worship together is more than just the Pastor giving a sermon. Listed below are some of the parts of Worship: The Altar set up Communion set up Music Choir, bells, keyboard, specials Greeters Ushers Acolytes Liturgists Banners SAMM (continued next column) All of these areas work together to make Sunday Morning Worship. The team meets regularly to make sure all of these items fit together to make sure you the congregation have a meaningful worship. Upcoming Activities: Liturgists: Pastor Galene is going to be setting up a time to work with the folks that are interested in being a liturgist or if you plan to continue being one, you will need to attend this short class. Greeters: RuthAnn is always looking for folks to greet on Sunday morning. You will always find her at the back of the church helping out. Going Paperless in 2019 At the September Leadership Council meeting, as we look for ways to balance our books, it was decided that Trinity will go Paperless starting January The Transformer Newsletter will be, as it is currently, on the Trinity Website - In the bottom left corner you will see Recent Posts with the most current two or three newsletters for your reading pleasure and they are in COLOR!!! At the top of the page is heading of About Us with newsletters from the past year. A few newsletters will be printed and available in the office for those more comfortable with that format. Additionally, we will use order of worship and the SAMM versus a bulletin. The specifics of what that will look like is currently under consideration. Got questions and / or comments please contact Pastor Galene; Bob Klein, Church Administrator; or AnnaMarie Sollars, Leadership Team Chair. October 7th
