4 From the R.E.C. Mrs Judi Essing Dear Parents Gospel: John 10: /4/2018 Gospel Challenge : Who have been the shepherds in your life who have guided and protected you? Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful Easter and a fantastic few weeks holiday with families and friends and feel ready for Term 2. Already the holidays seem a life time ago with the busy week that we have all encountered on our return to school. The children all came back happy and refreshed the whole school being involved in Alleluia Day a day of celebration associated with Jesus Resurrection. Throughout the course of the day, the children worked in their family groups and were involved in making rainbow people, Easter baskets, headbands, bunny rabbit puppets and learning Easter hymns with Liturgical movements. The day concluded with a Prayer celebration that incorporated all of the day s activities. It was a wonderful way to commence our term - working in family groups and then joining as one school family at the end to celebrate this amazing event. Easter has come and gone but with the holidays it seems to sneak by without a great deal of acknowledgment. It is the most important event in the church s calendar. It is the event that determines who we are and what we believe. As a school it is the reason for our existence as we are Catholics first. Easter is the greatest feast in the Christian calendar. On this Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. For Catholics, Easter Sunday comes at the end of 40 days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving known as Lent. Through spiritual struggle and self-denial, we have prepared ourselves to die spiritually with Christ on Good Friday, the day of His Crucifixion, so that we can rise again with Him in new life on Easter. Easter is a day of celebration because it represents the fulfillment of our faith as Christians. St. Paul wrote that, unless Christ rose from the dead, our faith is in vain (1 Corinthians 15:17). Through his death, Christ saved mankind from sin, and He destroyed the hold that death has on all of us; but it is His Resurrection that gives us the promise of new life, both in this world and the next. In the Our Father, we pray that "Thy Kingdom come, on earth as it is in Heaven, and Christ told His disciples that some of them would not die until they saw the Kingdom of God "coming in power" (Mark 9:1). The early Christian Fathers saw Easter as the fulfillment of that promise. With the resurrection of Christ, God's Kingdom is established on earth, in the form of the Church. As part of a reflection on this important feast I would encourage you to slowly read One Solitary Life and think about the sentiments contained within. The church founded on the life of Jesus is going through a period of turmoil, but we need to reflect on what it stands for and where we are in relation to our belief in Jesus and what he means to us. Our religious beliefs are a part of who we are and we need not confuse the message by the actions of some. e was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman.

5 He grew up in still another village, where he worked in a carpenter shop Until he was thirty. Then for three years he was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He didn't go to college. He never visited a big city. He never travelled two hundred miles from the place where he was born. He did none of the things one usually associates with greatness. He had no credentials but himself. He was only thirty-three when the tide of public opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. He was turned over to his enemies. And went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing, the only property he had on Earth. When he was dead, he was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. Twenty centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure of the human race, and the leader of mankind's progress. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put together have not affected the life of man on Earth as much as that. ~~Dr James Allen Francis, 1926 Project Compassion 2018 The final tally for Project Compassion 2018 is $ from the class boxes + $ from our Term 1 Social Justice day - a grand total of $541.20! With trying times affecting most of our families, THANK-YOU again for finding that extra money to give to the many people in our world who are not nearly as fortunate as ourselves. 10 Recycle Your Batteries Battery recycling is a recycling activity that aims to reduce the number of batteries being disposed as municipal solid waste. Batteries contain a number of heavy metals and toxic chemicals and disposing them by the same process as regular trash has raised concerns over soil contamination and water pollution. If you have any used batteries at home. Don t throw them in the bin! Bring them into the St.Jude s office. We will collect them and take them to the tip for you. For more information about how batteries are recycled, use the link below. d/

11 INTEGRATED PSYCHOLOGY CHILD & ADULT CONSULTANT PSYCHOLOGISTS Dear Parents, For those who do not know me, my name is Carol, and I have been consulting as a Counselling Psychologist onsite at St Jude s Primary School, for over a year now. I see children for psychology appointments under Medicare s Better Access to Mental Health Programme where these appointments are bulk-billed. This means I can see your child during school hours, with no out of pocket expenses, with a referral from your local GP. I have been working in Private Practice for over 5 years around the Mornington Peninsula area, and have extensive experience working with people of all ages with a vast array of presenting problems. My experience extends to working in primary schools with children. Some of the common issues I see children for include: Anxiety (worry, social problems, separation anxiety, performance anxiety, panic, phobias and generalised anxiety) Depression Adjustment disorder (such as adjusting to family separation) Attention Deficit & Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Grief and loss Trauma Behavioural disorders Sleep issues Stress and anger problems Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Evidence-based approaches are utilized and include: Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindful Meditation, Child-Centred Play Therapy, Relaxation Strategies, Skills Training, and psycho-education. These aim to help children to: Improve social skills through clearer communication Develop more rational and helpful thinking styles to improve coping Developing stronger positive attitudes and self-assurance Learn to relax and understand the physical benefits of relaxation Improve their ability to deal with anger and stress Learn how our self-created thoughts impact on our feelings and behaviour. I trust this information is helpful to you and your child. Please do not hesitate to contact Fred Martens, Wellbeing Officer, at St Jude s Primary School if you require further information or if you are interested in psychological support for your child.
