1 September 2014 Newsletter St. Paul Lutheran Church From the Heart of Your Shepherd N4118 Cty Rd AB Luxemburg, WI Church Office: P: F: Mission Statement The mission of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran is to strengthen and support our members in their Christian faith through God s Word, the Sacraments, education, prayer and fellowship; thereby preparing them to be witnesses of the Gospel in our community and the world, so that all who believe shall receive the gift of eternal life. So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17 First of all, I want to thank everyone for making the transition to St. Paul a smooth one. A move for a family the size of mine is a monumental undertaking. I greatly appreciate so many people helping out in so many ways from unloading trucks, the food pantry, help with projects at the house, making my family feel welcome in general, and the many other acts of kindness. I am excited to be here and serving St. Paul congregation. My start here at St. Paul has been a little unusual since I preached before I was installed and then, due to the 125 th celebration, I didn t preach the Sunday after I was installed. It seems like there hasn t really been an exact start date. Nonetheless, September marks a significant turn in the life of a congregation. It is in September that we get settled into a more normal schedule of activities. The kids are back in school and things pick up so to speak. September especially marks a renewed focus on education and that is especially true in the church. September marks the beginning of confirmation classes and Sunday school for all ages. People often wonder what a new pastor will be like. They wonder what he will focus his attention on and where will he devote his time. As Lutherans, we understand that it is through our hearing of God s Word that the Holy Spirit comes to us and creates and sustains faith in Christ. Hearing God s Word is of the greatest importance for us because it is through that Word of God that the Holy Spirit keeps us strong in our faith in Jesus. It is essential for us to always be found with faith in Jesus so that we can live our lives in the joy that comes from knowing Him and look forward to being with Him forever in heaven. All of this makes it essential for us to make that hearing of God s Word central in our lives. I want to encourage you, as we enter into the month of September, to focus on hearing the Word of God. I know that in the summer people can easily get out of the habit of attending worship regularly, and that is especially true when congregations are without a pastor. I hope that you will once again make a commitment to be in church regularly to hear God s Word. I also want to encourage you to come to Bible study that you might grow in your knowledge of God s Word. If you have kids who are of Sunday school age, I hope that you will make a point of having them in Sunday school so that they might grow up knowing Jesus as their savior. The color of the paraments in church remains green at this time of the year. It reminds us that this is a time of growth for us in the church. I can assure you that as we gather to hear and study God s Word that the Holy Spirit will provide growth. He will grow us spiritually in Christ. In His service, Pastor Daniel Olson

2 St. Paul Charger News Theme: SOAR (Solid as a Rock)-- But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:31 The school year marks the 130 th anniversary of St. Paul Lutheran School. Praise be to God that the children that attend our school can learn about Christ in an educational setting. 2 nd Annual Walk-a-thon Fundraiser The 2nd annual Walk-a-thon will take place on September 26th at NEW Lutheran High School. The students at St. Paul will join together with other area Lutheran Schools as together they walk to raise money for their prospective school. Last year this event raised over $10,100! Please watch for further information on how you can contribute to this event or contact the office. We ask for your prayers that this event would be a success and that as always, in everything we do it would be to the glory of our Lord. Rededication of Staff & Christian Education Sunday On September 23, the staff of St. Paul will be rededicated and the school children will sing. After the service, there will be an open house at the school and a book fair will be taking place in the fellowship hall. Once again, the Board of Christian Education will be preparing a meal that can be purchased. Educational Opportunities Our staff will once again be utilizing Einstein Education Kits to enrich our Science curriculum. The staff attended training over the summer on how to incorporate these kits. Hello from Mrs. Sarah Ludwig I am very excited to be joining the St. Paul Family. I grew up in Shawano, WI and attended St. James School. I currently live in Hobart. I attended the University of Wisconsin Green Bay and graduated in Elementary Education with a history minor. For the past 6 years, I have been sharing the love of Jesus with students at Redeemer Lutheran in Green Bay. My husband and I are very busy with our three children: Briella, age 6, Brooks, age 3 and Brody age 1 ½. Family is very important and we enjoy going for bike rides, boating or relaxing at our cottage. I look forward to meeting and working with many of you in the months to come. God Bless! Apply: by attending rehearsal on Tuesday, September 16, at 7:30 P.M. in the meeting room at church. We accept members from 7th grade and older. All are welcome! Remember! The voice you are born with is God's gift to you; the use of your voice is your gift to God. St. Paul Lutheran Endowment Fund Our congregation recently set up an endowment fund. This is new to our congregation, and the Endowment Committee Board Members would like to address questions that members of the congregation might have. In upcoming newsletters, we will address additional questions related to the Endowment Fund. Brochures and envelopes for the Endowment Fund can be found in the narthex. What is an endowment fund? It is a gift you give that keeps on giving even after you have passed away. Our endowment fund receives financial gifts and invests them. The principal is kept intact and the interest is used. This way, the funds donated aren t touched and support St. Paul year after year. It also provides a way for motivated members to continue to support St. Paul s ministry from heaven without jeopardizing any support to their loved ones. What Special Designated Endowment Funds does St. Paul have? St. Paul has the following three funds that gifts can be designated towards: General Church Endowment Fund this fund will be used to assist with general operating expenses associated with the operation of our Church. General School Endowment Fund this fund will be used to assist with general operating expenses associated with the operation of our Lutheran Day School. Tuition Assistance Endowment Fund this fund will be used to provide financial assistance for tuition first and foremost to congregation members whose children attend St. Paul Lutheran School and secondly to nonmember families in financial need whose children attend St. Paul Lutheran School. 4 STEWARDSHIP NEWS & VIEWS What is Christian Stewardship? A steward is someone who is entrusted with the care of another s possessions-and so Christian Stewardship is the response which the men and women of the Church are called to make to God for all he has given and done for us. It is not just about money. When we receive a gift we say thank you and that is what we should be saying to God, not just in our offerings, but by sharing and using our time and talents that God has blessed us with as well. How are you going to say THANK YOU to God? Put your treasure where God calls you to put it, and your heart will follow. Your hearts will be set on things above, for these things family, society, and church---are of God. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, all this will be added to you. 6 Christian Service Guild News: All ladies are welcome invited to our annual Christian Service Guild Guest Night on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 7pm in the church meeting room. Bonnie Kratz will give a presentation on Women in Aviation. Refreshments will be served. Please join us and bring a friend This year the Service Guild is collecting Fabric Kits during the month of September. Collection boxes for these kits will be available in the narthex. Each kit should include the following items: -Two spools of matching or neutral-colored general purpose thread ( yards each) -Two pieces of cotton fabric. No knits or polyester. Each piece should match one of the following sizes: 2 ¼ yards of 60 wide fabric or 3 yards of 44 wide fabric or 4 yards of 36 wide fabric Pieces do not need to be new or match in size or color/pattern but be clean with no stains or holes. Fold thread and one piece of fabric inside the second piece of fabric and tie with ribbon or yarn. Rummage & Bake Sale Thank you again to all who took part in the 4 th annual rummage and bake sale! We appreciate the congregation s participation. We look forward to next year s sale so start saving and always remember storage is available by calling any guild member. We look forward to working together for God s glory! The Sunday School is looking for substitute teachers to help out whenever needed. Sunday school is 8:15am 9:15am.
