Good news banner 2 A Word from our Pastor Reverend Matt Nieman Awakening to God s Beauty Every year, Presbyterians Today publishes a Lenten devotional. This year s devotional is titled, Awakening to God s Beauty. In Ash Wednesday s devotion, author Krin Van Tatenhove writes that two themes combine to form the perfect inspiration for this season: objects like ashes that remind us of our mortality and the beauty of creation that reminds us of our blessings. This Lent, I encourage you to take time to be awakened to the beauty around us. With the grass starting to green and the daffodils already blooming, beauty is all around us. Take time to notice how the earth is being regenerated after a long winter s nap. In the midst of this beauty, and amid the reality of our limitedness as humans, we think of God and ascribe to God the praise for all we have. In Psalm 8, David does not shrink from this responsibility. He exclaims, O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Indeed, all we have and enjoy is due to the creator s majesty all around us. May the six weeks of this season serve as a gentle reminder of this glorious reality. Fresh Look Project Update The Fresh Look renovation project is on the horizon. All of us on the leadership team are itching for the work to begin. As it seems with every construction project, we continue to wait until final steps are completed. During the first week of March, we hope to settle on a final price with the contractor for the project. Once the Session has done that, we will enter a contract and wait for a permit from the Town of Farragut. Once the contract has been signed and the permit granted, the work will begin. Thanks for your continued patience and investment. 2

Good news banner 4 Are you interested in learning what it means to be Presbyterian, or what our reformed traditions are about? Maybe you would like more information on how FPC is structurally organized and about the many activities that are part of our church life. Our next Chat with Matt two-sunday series will be held on March 17 and 24 in the Fellowship Hall during the Sunday School time (9:45). All from our church family, both members and visitors, are invited to come and learn more about our faith, our church, and our governing body. For more information, please contact Gale Montgomery, gmb1121@aol.com. It is needed and it is coming: an updated church directory! We will begin taking pictures in the Narthex starting the first Sunday in April. Anyone who is happy with their current picture can note that on the register. Children have grown a lot in the two years since our last pictures, so please make it a priority to get a quick family picture taken. Thank you, from the Church Life Committee. We welcome Rosemary DenUyl as an affiliate member here at FPC. Her late husband s family name is Dutch and is pronounced denial. She is a long-time member at Mars Hill Presbyterian church in Athens, TN, and plans to maintain her permanent membership there. She was on the session as a deacon years ago and has served as elder and Clerk of Session, both in Athens and in Greenville, SC. She and her husband raised their family in Athens, where he was employed at Bowater Pulp and Paper Company and she worked at Cleveland State as Director of Business and Industry. After their three sons were grown, they spent eight years in Greenville, SC, the Bowater company headquarters, where they were involved in an active church, and Rosemary served as Elder and Clerk of Session. She was Director of The Management Center, a training center for Business and Industry for the South Carolina University system. In 1996, at the time of her husband s retirement, they built a home on their Watts Bar lake lots where the family had enjoyed camping through the years. Rosemary still enjoys living there when the weather is warm and sunny, but in the gloomy months of winter she and her two dogs are happy in a condo in Farragut, very near one of her sons. One son is Director of Engineering at Dual Commercial LLC and lives with his wife in Farragut. Two sons are retired and one still lives in the Athens area, but the other son and one grandson live here in Knoxville. Her local grandson is a project manager and works for Cross Engineering. His wife is a nurse in the cardio department at UT hospital. They have a ten-month-old son and three-year-old daughter. Her other grandson is Chief Resident in radiology at Cleveland Clinic, OH, where his wife is employed in private practice as an ob/gyn doctor. They have two young daughters. While not participating currently, Rosemary was a Rotarian in Greenville and Athens. She was one of the first female members invited to membership in Greenville. Since retiring she has been active in a Garden Club in Athens, she switched her PEO membership to one here, and enjoys reading and participating in a book club. 4

Good news banner 5 And he said to them, The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Luke 10:2 Family Promise is featured on TV again! If you Google WBIR Family Promise Story, and then click on the video about hope, you will see one of our FP guest families talking about the importance of Family Promise to her. Alicia and her family were at Westside for just one night because they had signed a lease for their new apartment on Sunday, the 24 th. We met them on Monday, when they came to eat dinner and pick up their personal items. They were literally dancing with joy. Alicia said she was so grateful for Family Family Promise dates for /27-2/3 5/26-6/2 8/11-8/18 10/13-10/20 Promise, so much so she has signed up to be a volunteer. Her partner has a new job, and their son was excited about starting in a new school after a less than pleasant experience in his former one. What a wonderful new beginning, and we pray for their success and happiness. Please consider becoming part of this blessed interfaith ministry that helps hard working families find a new home and better paying jobs and training. FPC had 21volunteers working with families, both hands on and behind the scenes, during our most recent hosting week. You can make a difference in a family s life during a most difficult time, and receive so much in return as you interact with our guests. Next hosting week MAY 26 JUNE 2. (NEW DATE) Contact Beth bethloyless@hotmail.com or Looking to get involved with VMC? Meal Groups are a great volunteer opportunity. These groups provide meals for those working hard to escape the streets and achieve housing. The next VMC lunch will be on Monday, March 25. The coordinator will be MaryAnne Walls. There is a sign-up sheet on the table in the narthex. If you have any questions or concerns please contact MaryAnne Walls at or maryannewalls@aol.com. 5

Good news banner 11 Music at FPC Dr. Angela Batey, Director of Music Music for Lent A collage of Lenten symbols: purple... fasting... simplicity... preparation... baptism... quiet... ashes... renewal... conversion... the cross... repentance... the catechumenate. The evolution of the Church's liturgical practices has certainly produced a rich and intricate tapestry for the season of Lent. Lectionary passages reinforce the special nature of the season. The music in worship used during this season also builds on this groundwork, helping to bring alive the themes and moods of the liturgy, helping to set the season apart. Few people today would think of Lent as a season for liturgical music, because Christmas has almost cornered the market. Unsatisfied with its own ample store of tunes, Christmas absorbs other seasonal compositions. Handel's Messiah, no matter what you have heard, is an Easter oratorio, and the "Hallelujah Chorus" celebrates the Resurrection not the Nativity. Lenten music has its own particular beauty full of somber, minor sonorities. Lent has been an enormous source of inspiration for composers, the birthplace of gems like the hymn "O Sacred Head Now Wounded." In a way, Lenten music began before the Church did. Jesus and the apostles sang Passover hymns on the first Holy Thursday, as testified by the Gospels of Matthew and Mark. The earliest Christians often sang of the passion and death of Christ, although their music is mostly lost. The High Middle Ages was a rich seedbed of penitential music. The Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath"), attributed to the 13th-century musician Thomas of Celano, was eventually incorporated into the Requiem Mass in the 16th century. To this day, composers take great delight in using this apocalyptic text as a starting point for magnificent (and very loud) orchestrations. Bach's name is inseparable from sacred music, especially Lenten music, due largely to his four oratorios based on the Gospel accounts of the Passion. Two of them are lost, but the St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion are high-water marks for depth and complexity. From the opening notes of the St. John Passion, we are invited to contemplate a world thrown out of balance by sin and the innocence of the Lamb to be slain; in Bach's own understated way, the trial sequence of the St. John Passion chillingly reminds us of the world's darkness. For our worship during Lent, the area of hymn selection has great impact on the mood of our liturgies. Looking specifically at Lenten hymnody, we see that there are certain traditional hymns, coming from a number of sources (German chorales, spirituals, English hymn tunes). The hymns "Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days," "Were You There?" 11

Good news banner 12 and "Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley" are familiar to most congregations and should be a part of every Lent. The introits and anthems sung by the choir during the Lenten season are chosen very carefully, as always, with the goal of enhancing the spoken Word. Tami Newsom, our organist also makes selections very carefully, avoiding those joyful pieces which are better saved for Easter or Ordinary Time. You will hear that Lenten music is not simply more of what is played or sung during Ordinary Time, but has a character of its own. Purple tells our eyes it is Lent; texts tell our mind it is Lent; prayers tell our hearts it is Lent; and music tells our ears it is Lent. Lent, like Advent, is a time for solemn and sober thought about one's sins leading to repentance. It denotes a quiet time for watching, waiting, and praying for Christ's passion and resurrection. Annual Spring Pops Concert Sunday, April 28, 6:00 p.m. UT Contemporary Acappella This concert features three groups from the University of Tennessee: revolution (all-female), VOLume (all-male), UT Singers (co-ed) 12

Besides reading some wonderful stories, we learned how to take care of our books. The Knoxville Zoomobile also visited. We met Monty the python, Linguine the ferret, and Owen Quilson the hedgehog. Valentine s Day had many special treats and activities. The Valentine exchanges were lots of fun. The children in each classroom decorated shoeboxes to put all their Valentines and goodies in to take home. Then each child gave out their valentines. They were so excited. This was also an opportunity to talk about kindness, sharing, and being a good friend. Our curriculum themes this month are Dr. Seuss, shamrocks and clovers, spring, and weather. We hope The Cat in the Hat (aka Ann Slagle) will be visiting our school again this year to help celebrate Dr. Seuss week. CEP was hit with lots of illness just like the school systems.
