1 2016 New Hope UMC Women s Retreat Worry Less. Live More. Friday, February 5 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm Saturday, February 6 9:00 am - 3:00 pm You re Invited! New Hope UMC welcomes renowned author and speaker Jane Rubietta to lead women on a two-day retreat designed to help you leave behind worry and anxiety. Experience joy and rest in the pleasure of a God who delights in you! Invite moms, daughters, sisters, neighbors, and friends for an experience filled with love and laughter! Register using the form found at the Information Center or go online to Cost to participate is $15 per person to cover the cost of meals. You may either pay in advance at New Hope or bring the registration fee with you on Friday, February 5. About Jane Rubietta Laugh and grow deep with Jane Rubietta. Author of 18 books, international speaker, animated storyteller, Jane draws women into God s heart and purpose. She is dramatic, joyful, fun, and honest. Women tell her, You ve been reading my journal! and You are just like me. Jane s speaking is practical, personal, and hilarious. Expect for God to speak, expect to meet new friends, expect God to do a wonder in the time together. EPH Update At our January board meeting we had a heart-felt conversation and sharing of our care, concern, and support for the families and children who stay in our homes. Life happens, so to speak, and many of us have close families, relatives, or church friends we can turn to. Most homeless families do not have these support systems the extended relationships we often take for granted. EPH, in partnership with The Salvation Army, is creating a Reading Buddies program for reading to children. This will add to a family s support system. It will also be an opportunity to support the cognitive and emotional development of the children, who are often impacted by the trauma of poverty. Last year our partnership made a difference for 42 families, which included 45 adults and 97 children. Thank you for your support in providing safety, stability, and solutions for our families.

The people shrove for forgiveness of their sins. People who gave up eating meat and fat for Lent used up all of their meat and fat by having a big dinner the night before. We enjoy the tradition of dinner and celebration before Lent with our church family. Join us for pancakes, games, prizes and crafts on Tuesday, February 9. 5 Food From the Heart: Feb 7 & 14 The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the LORD will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy. Psalms 22:26, NLT This Bible verse reminds us of exactly why our church pantry plays a vital role in our community and as a church family. In the month of February, we ask all of you to help this very worthwhile project by donating canned goods to our pantry. These food items are necessary to keep our local families in need with healthy meals. Let them know you care by attaching a heart with your first name to your canned goods and place them in the grocery cart in the Gathering Area. Your Name: The following items are needed: hot and cold cereal, diced tomatoes, pinto beans, soup with meat, corn, and any paper products. Thank you for your generous support. Every item is greatly appreciated! Today s Hymn Note Precious Lord, Take My Hand Thomas A. Dorsey, the most influential figure in the gospel song movement, wrote this hymn when his first wife and newborn son died in Given the circumstances surrounding Dorsey's writing of this text, it is not surprising that it has the character of the Old Testament lament psalms: we confess our own helplessness (stanza 1), and we utter a cry for divine help (stanza 2), but even in the face of death we are confident of God's saving power (stanza 3). Dorsey is considered the "father" of the African American gospel tradition and was an active writer in this style from the 1920s through the 1950s. "Precious Lord" is the most popular of the early group of gospel songs that arose in the United States. Martin Luther King, Jr., chose the hymn as one of the "freedom anthems" of the Civil Rights Movement. Dorsey is credited as the composer of the tune PRECIOUS LORD, which he wrote for this text. PRECIOUS LORD is an arrangement of the tune MAITLAND (see Hymn #424) composed by Oberlin educator George N. Allen in SCRIP for Valentines Why not purchase a SCRIP gift card for your Valentine? Remember, all profits from your SCRIP purchases benefit our Youth, Children s Council, Preschool, Goodwill Place, Missions and UMW! SCRIP available at the information desk this morning! Giving Assistance We want you to be aware that Pastor David and Deacon Dave have a Pastor s Discretionary Fund that is used to assist people in need. It is there to provide help on an emergency or short-term basis for folks who need food, shelter, or transportation. The fund is supported by your donations. If someone in need asks for money or other kinds of assistance in our building or parking lot, please refer them to one of our clergy or staff.
